NFT: Receiving credit card payments online

Rick5 : 9/14/2014 4:14 pm
I'm the treasurer for a professional organization. We have about 100 members and dues are $30 per year. Up until a couple of weeks ago, all online dues payments were handled by the umbrella organization and they would just cut me a check once per month for deposit into our (separate) account. This is no longer going to be possible, so I need to figure out a way to accept these payments from individuals myself (with a link on our website). I have a business checking account for the organization. I was going to call the bank tomorrow. Do banks normally do this sort of thing, or will I need to use something like paypal? I have a paypal account, but I have only ever used it to send money (plus, I'd want to open a separate account for this). Is it a pain in the ass to set up a paypal account to receive CC payments and then transfer them to a business account? It sucks that I am going to have to keep track of each individual payment now, but it is what it is.

Your bank will probably have an option to create a Merchant Account which will allow you to accept credit-card payments online (usually for a fee). Also - you'll need an interface that allows people to input their credit-card information for processing. Again, some banks offer this (for a fee) or you can sign up with a Payment Gateway that provides this service (for a fee).

I deal with integrating credit-card processing functions to various merchants as part of my job (B2B). I'm unsure if there's other, less costly options available.

I would check with my bank first to see what's available.

PayPal is probably the easiest way to go

You just set up a new PayPal account, best to use an e-mail from the domain of the org, and link it to a business checking account. It's very easy and doesn't require a lot of extra work.
Banks are a good place to start

But they dont always have the best deals.

I have been in the business of credit card processing for over 15 years.
If interested, I can help you out.

Banks change about $50 per month plus some other fees

You need to do the math, and see if PayPal is better, which charges 2.2 -2.9pct based on volume.

For an org that I wor pak with, the fees from our bank were nearly 1k per year, so we switched to PayPal.
