is an excuse for him, it's how little talent there is on this roster.
STs are usually where you see how deep a team really is and this team has serious problems finding low-end starters at various positions; by the time they "get to" STs, they're pretty badly exposed.
doing the research to see how the ST performed relative to the rest of the league in terms of return yardage, net yardage, turnovers, takeaways and TDs scored and allowed, it sure seems, at least anecdotally/observationally, that ST under Quinn have been more of a burden than a positive.
ST was the key factor in losing today although it hasn't prevented aspersion and blame to be cast to all kinds of players today.
This team won all of its preseason games with back of the roster guys. We should have enough depth to field competent ST's. Tom Quinn is a terrible coach. I'm sorry but when you have a track record like he does you should be fired. How he has a job is beyond me. Week in and week out we hear about the other teams return team and how dangerous they are. The opponents hear what a liability our specials are and how they can and will turn the game around.
But I don't get this irrational theory he is the one to blame. Ginn was stopped IF the player wrapped him up instead of shoulder tackling. He also was not the guy who fumbled the ball. Add to that the fact everyone claims we have shit talent and the ST is where your backups play...So is it the coach or the talent and the failure of that talent to execute?
RE: Quinn has missed too many tackles, allowing T,D.s
He has fumbled too many balls on returns.
Put him back on the sideline with the rest of the coaches.
More total stupidity on BBI.
Do any of you understand the game and the functions of
coaches vis a vis players?
If this was an isolated incident, I would agree. But we haven't returned a punt for a score since 2009. Meanwhile we've surrendered 5 returns since then.
This becomes even more curious to me after you factor in that both Ingram and Pope lost their jobs last season (without considering Gilbride for a moment).
Why on earth dump the TE and RB coaches, but keep this stiff?
RE: Quinn has missed too many tackles, allowing T,D.s
I'm far from a Quinn apologist, but I fail to see how a fumbled KO is his fault, and the punt return is on Weatherford. I credit him for playing with torn ligaments, but that kick was short, low and in the middle of the field. That is dangerous with any punt returner, no less one with Ginn's speed.
a long time ago. Even if you can make the argument that a particular incident "wasn't his fault" (which is sometimes true), there have been loads of incidents during his tenure. And when that happens, coaches get the axe.
And really, what would we be losing if we had a different special teams coach? This is a franchise-changing decision like changing a head coach, GM, or QB. It's the special teams coach. Just get a new one.
Maybe he's a super guy, but that's the nature of professional coaching. You don't perform, you're looking for a new job.
All I need to know about Quinn is that for his entire tenure here, or as long as I can remember of it, I go into every non-FG special teams play with the "please don't let something disastrous" happen mentality, and so long as the result is not horrible, I'm pleasantly surprised.
But, he is the coach of the guy who used poor technique to tackle and the coach of the guy who repeatedly decided to take the ball out from halfway in the end zone, while barely making it to the 20 with no word to stop from the sideline. This was a factor in the fumble. He's the coach of the guy (same guy that missed the crucial tackle) that watched the PR instead of the ball as it landed right next him and then bounced into the end zone (no attempt catch it, bat it or down it). He's the coach of the team that consistently has been unable to muster any return game on punts or kicks spanning several years, regardless of the players fielding those kicks. He's the coach of the team that consistently has breakdowns in punt coverage and directional kicking.
The last one is where I really have a problem. Weatherford has been criticized by many for kicking it down the middle. Did you ever think he might have been told to, or at least not expressly told to kick to a sideline? The coverage seemed to be geared toward the middle of the field on that kick. and, if he wasn't healthy enough to be kicking, then it is on the coaches to recognize that, preferably before the game (I don't think it was his health or the hang time or being down the middle).
Okay, I surrender. Fire Quinn along with Fewell, this week.
don't leave much chance for the coverage team to establish landmarks.
Giving them hang time hasn't really helped either. Their incompetence just gets more pronounced when your punter on one healthy ankle accidentally messes one up.
Other than that I have no idea why he is still ST coach.
Looks like I was wrong. A punt return given up and fumbled kick return on the same day. Pathetic.
Truly the reason the Giants lost today and if it continues he should be fired mid season. There are no more excuses.

See: Kiwanuka, Herzlich, etc.
This is a reflection of Tom's biggest problem ...loyalty to those who do not deserve it. PF has to go also.
But house will be cleaned very shortly
The only 3 good choices he made were Tyree, Hixon and Wilson.
Unreal.
i never feel like Tom has the best 11 on the field at any given time.

Listen Tom. You suck. You don't need to sign on to BBI anonymously to defend yourself.

Probably not a good sign.

Enough with giving up 3rd downs. Sucks the life out of the team and the crowd.
