Am I angry about the game today? Yes.
I was one of those this preseason who was beginning to have some legitimate concerns about Eli. I didn't think he was "finished" and didn't think it was quite Nassib time but I thought it was possible that he was losing a few MPH off his fastball and thought his mechanics were all messed up.
That said, I thought Eli was really good today. He'd probably like to have the INT back and shouldn't have forced that throw and Cruz didn't help him by dropping a key pass late in the game but he was really on the money for the most part and I thought he looked so much more comfortable in this offense than what we had seen so far.
I think this game was actually a good sign going forward because I'm starting to think that the offense may not be quite as putrid as last year and the rumors of Eli's demise may have been premature. I thought the OL actually did a good job of giving him time to throw the ball. We could really use Beckham and there are still things I'd like to see improve, but to me, this was the sharpest Eli has looked in some time and it was kind of exciting to start to feel like he was going to make plays when he had the football again.
This team is so goddamn frustrating in so many ways but I feel pretty confident in saying that #10 still has some good ball left in him. If we can stop beating ourselves and stop with the special teams breakdowns, we'll have a less miserable year than last year.
We have to win the next 2 games. I don't know if we will but I'm not quite ready to write this year off yet. Hope IND beats the Eagles tomorrow night and we're just a game behind everyone. The offense should hopefully keep getting better. We'll see.
Meanwhile, someone on the opposing team will contort themselves into making some amazing one handed grab and we'll all complain about the Giants' defense giving it up, as though it was some gimme (I'm not excluding myself from that either, hence the "we").
Guy even tucked it and ran for four or five today too. Now he will win no speed races and will never look to run first, as he is a pocket QB, but he is not a statue.
Also for good measure Eli has a rushing TD on another continent, Miami in '07.
People with no injury histories like to pretend that once some minimum arbitrary window passes where some beat reporter said a medical source reported that so and so should be ready to return to poractice, fans act like they expect the guy to be starting next week, number one, and number two fans like to pretend that these injuries go away and these athletes don't feel lingering effect to one degree or another most often for the rest of their lives, and athletes are expected to get interviewed and come out and spout some bullshit how they are all healed and it doesn't bother them anymore and blah blah blah reassurances phony horseshit.you thing eli dont feel it in the bottom of his foot from time to time from that fascitis is nonsense.
didnt he dislocate a shoulder?you think that never acts up? you dont think every once it a blue moon on a cloudy damp day that shit doesn't sometimes swell just a bit? you guys have very little understanding for the pain that these guys deal with.
But, on a good day, Eli can be fairly mobile. They really just don't want him doing it.It's bad business as far as the giants are concerned. I don't think NY would ever draft a Vick or a McNabb or a Cunningham or an RGIII even if they could.
Now, if Cruz had been there it may or may not have made a difference, but it was not a case of Eli being careless
Wouldnt have mattered if Cruz fell down or not, he hit the defender in the head with the ball and it was tipped up for grabs.
It will be an interesting season, I hope I don't have to puke on my shoes.
It will be an interesting season, I hope I don't have to puke on my shoes.
Inconsistent Eli or not, he demonstrated he can still do it.His WRs next week will realize they dont have his inconsistency as a cover, and will be forced to clean their own houses this week a bit. They will win next week.
If not for 4 turnovers and a punt return for a TD we would have won today. and frankly i think we could have overcome all the other fuckups except Ted Ginns wild ride and Jennings bonehead spill.those 2 blows we couldn't handle, but I think we would have bounced back from the rest of the shit.
AMEN!
Are you sure? See Simms, Phil.
Now that I'm saying they will, or should? But some people clearly forget when we were regularly throwing out Dave Brown, Danny Kanell, and Kent Graham.
How many drops were there yesterday? Cruz has GOT to catch that fookin' ball.
Quote:
is way too much. Either extend him or cut him. I am certainly not saying what we should after today, but we can't pay him $17M next year.
No question he is plagued by a rotten OL, and inadequate receivers, but he is 33, immobile, has had accuracy problems, and threw 27 INTs last year. He has now thrown 100 INTs in the last five years IIRC. That is a shitload, even acknowledging that Gilbride's system put a real premium on a downfield passing game. I like what he did today, but his deficiencies are real.
What's a fair number for a quarterback? 17m may sound like a lot to you, but what number do you have in mind? They're not going to get away with paying him 12 just because.
Tom Brady took a much publicized pay cut to $14. I'm sure Eli's a team guy, but his agent isn't going to accept WR or DE pay grades.
Stop with all the contract talk. It is this high because we robbed peter to pay paul and kept extending him to free up cap space. We kept pushing money to the later years of the contract. You make it sound as if it is only up to one side to re-do the contract.
The first Eli interception was a poor, low through that popped off a lineman and became up for grabs.
Other than that, he was making great throws all over the field. While it was encouraging to see Randle beat Peterson in one-on-one red zone coverage, the rest of the game featured his receivers dropping the ball, literally and figuratively.
Cruz had two big drops in a row that broke the Giants back. Just terrible, terrible drops that your top receiver cannot have.
Our O-line still sucked run-blocking and kept the downs high and distances long.
Eric, it is more then that. At one point in the third quarter he had only two incompletions and he had several WR's drop easy passes. That was a well played game reguardless of the name on the Jersey.
What's the lowered bar?
He should have been the reason we won. His teammates let him down. The PR TD, the Demps fumble, the Cruz drops and the Jennings fumble were all things beyond his control that were front and center the reasons why we lost the game.
Without either of the fumbles or the drops, you're probably looking at a 300+ yard game with 3 scores to 1 INT.
For the throws that people complain aren't perfect enough (like Donnell having to jump) there were some great throws that weren't mentioned.. like the ball he threaded between two defenders to Cruz inside the redzone before our first score or the perfect pass that Cruz dropped late in the game.
Just from the standpoint of his reads and his ability to make throws that people didn't believe he could necessarily make in this offense, I really thought he had a good day and feel much more sure of the issues being OL related when we struggle rather than QB related (and for a minute there this summer, it was starting to creep into my head that perhaps it was both)
I mean I dont know if people watch QB play around the league, but even the great QBs like Peyton and Rodgers need their WRs to make plays. Julius/Demaryius Thomas had gorgeous TD catches. Jordy Nelson looked like the best WR in the game yesterday.
All you can ask your QB to do is put your WRs in position to make plays. Eli did that yesterday. So whether he put the ball a little higher, lower, or in their hands.... sometimes its up to the WR to make and finish plays. You think any of our WRs can do what Brandon Marshall did last night?
Eli made one bad throw (and it involved our best WR tripping over his own feet). The other 40 some throws were pinpoint, accurate, and in a position where our Wrs could make a play.
But in a world of fantasy football, if a Qb doesnt have 300 yards/4 TDs... its not good enough. If anyone thinks Eli was pedestrian yesterday, just has an axe to grind. That was probably his best game since 2012.
Is he supposed to throw the ball and catch it too?
The offensive line fared a bit better in pass pro as well. Funny how when the line blocks, the QB's play improves.
But every time I read that dude TylerAimee's post I wonder if he is watching the same game as I am.
How anyone, ANYONE could blame Eli Manning for yesterday's lost is beyond me. I was there, section 202A. Outside of that interception I can't really think of any ball that was badly thrown outside of that deep shot to Jernigan when he was double covered.
That first and third Cruz drops he couldn't have walked it over better. The 2nd one would have been a difficult catch, but we've seen Cruz do it before.
Ashame Rashad Jennings caught the Brandon Myers bug and tripped over the 15 yard line.
Its amazing. I got to work this morning and my buddies were like, Man the Giants stink, and I said yeah I know. And the next thing they say is Eli... man he was awful yesterday. I said how? Well, he didnt throw a perfect spiral. I countered with he had 12 incompletions, 5 of which were dropped balls. He said, well he didnt play well. And ended with that Eli needs to throw more to Cruz.
Its getting to the point where I just hate people.
We finally got to see McAdoo's offense and it looks like it could be a winner. If our receivers didn't have so many critical drops, we could have easily put up 3 more TDs!
And speaking of Tiki, I think it's time for some Giants fans to get the fuck over what he said. 7 years ago and 2 rings later, I think Eli showed everyone how tough he can be.
- at home
- in a relatively desperate spot trying to avoid 0-2
- against an injury depleted team, flying across the country with a health situation including (but not remotely close to limited to) the necessity to start a qb who hasnt started in 4 years
I think the bar definitely has been lowered to insane levels. Not necessarily in the context of eli (at least not yesterday), but certainly when it comes to the giants. Ive noticed a good deal of borderline moral victory talk off the shitfest of yesterday. Not just on bbi, but even coughlin and the players themselves talked about having made progress. Is this where we are at now?
I thought we would be a 5 win team this year and nothing ive seen has changed my mind.
In a matter of minutes, they had a punt return for a TD, we fumbled and lost the kickoff and then as we were driving, we had a freak fumble by a guy that never fumbles. Yet after all that, we were still in the game.
There's no moral victories in the NFL, but there are signs that things are coming around and we are improving.
They're rebuilding an offensive line and threw out an offensive scheme they ran for a decade. They lack talent at certain key areas. They were 7-9 because of their deficiencies last year, and only because they faced a lot of backup QBs.
When you don't have a horse, how can you expect to win?
The turnovers were obviously a huge issue last year as well but yesterday I just felt like Eli looked the most "in control" I've seen in quite some time.
I let all my frustrations out while I was out for the game so a few hours later, after I had cooled down and figured this board was already littered with "worst Giants team ever" threads, it would be worth noting that the QB actually played pretty darn well.
End of the day, it's still a killer loss and one we couldn't afford but I'm a little more optimistic about this offense moving forward.
He's coming off a lot of bad games in past 2 years. These are the kind of games that good QBs have in most weeks. If he goes out and has another 8 or 9 games like this in the regular season, then he'll be worth his money.
2 games in and I like McAdoo alot. I just wish we'd take more than 2 shots deep down field.
The offense finally showed signs of getting into a groove yesterday. The O still has plenty of holes and I don't expect them to be a Top 5 unit by any means, but we finally saw this team put together excellent drives based around the passing game.
That's absolutely a positive sign. I actually feel optimistic about this team for the first time in a while, seeing our offense actually look competent against a quality D. Eli and the O flashed something yesterday they hadn't flashed in a long time. This O is still a long way away and my optimistic take on this absolutely has to do with lowered expectations, but it's still good to see them improving.
If they look like a better team than last year, and the offense finally takes hold, Beckham finishes strong and by december you can finally say that Pugh, Richburg, Moore, Donnell, and JPP are looking like core pieces moving forward, I think they had a successful year.
They still need more talent. They're not ready to take the next step.
I don't know if we'll win more than 6 games this year but I do believe the 2014 Giants are going to be a better team than the 2013 team was.
if things start to really go south this year, I want to see nassib at some point (although it wont happen barring injury). Not because I believe hes definitely going to be better than eli or anything of the sort, but id like to have a better grasp on what we have
The new contract will provide cap relief and be more manageable and incentive based.
Also, if there is a coaching staff change, I'm sure question numero uno will be "what are you going to do with the QB".
Barring catastrophic injury, Eli is going nowhere. I know it's fun to discuss and speculate on, but it's likely never going to get as close to letting him walk as some on BBI believe.
I think a healthy 1st round Beckham will make a big difference. I can hardly wait to see him in action.
Jernigan out, Beckham in.
Last year our Offense ranked 28th in Yards, 28th in Points, 32nd in Turnovers. Our running game sucked (29th in rushing yds) and our passing game was an utter joke (19th in yds but the 32nd in INTs). We were arguably the worst fucking Offensive team in football last year.
In training camp practices this year, the 1st team offense was reportedly awful In the pre-season this year, the 1st team offense was awful. Against the Lions in week 1, this offense looked awful.
We had roughly the 30th best O in 2013 and before yesterday's game they showed absolutely nothing that indicated they'd be much better than that in 2014.
Yesterday the passing game got in a groove for the first time in forever. Our running game stunk but we were going up against an elite run D. We were sustaining long drives and if it weren't for untimely drops and stupid fumbles, this team would've put up more points.
Baby steps. We're not going to go from the 30th best O in 2013 to the 3rd best O in 2014. But if the passing game can continue to play like it did yesterday and our running game improves against weaker run Ds, I see an Offense that can jump back into the "Average-ish" ~15-20 range in 2014.
If we had the 18th ranked Offense last year, we would've won 9 or so games and competed for the division. And I think if we have an O in that range, we can again compete for the division unless the Eagles run away with it.
