NFL on tv..... 4 things

MarshallOnMontana : 9/14/2014 9:58 pm
1. Why was falcons at bengals a cbs game? For as long as I recall, road teams conference determines the network in an interconference game. This should have been a fox game. I dont get it, bizarrely out of the ordinary

2. David diehl has made a smooth transition to the booth. He really sounds as if he has been at it for years. Caught a good bit of hawks/chargers today

3. Much better week for mike carey in terms of his comfort level on camera, he came off very nervous in week 1

4. Did burkhardt and lynch just take off early in the giants game? That was weird

Welcome to the new world of "cross-flexing". The league can even move AFC vs AFC games to Fox and NFC vs NFC games to CBS if they want.

I missed that this offseason. I knew something had to be different
With regards to #4...

FOX showed the end of Browns/Saints immediately after the Giants game ended, and there was no commentary for that game either. Really odd, but I kind of enjoyed just watching the Browns celebrate without the play-by-play man droning on.
I thought I read here weeks ago

That diehl was only going to be working in a rotation this year on fox bottom team. Doesnt appear that way. He has had work the first two weeks, and paired with brenneman you certainly could be lower on the totum pole

I was never his biggest fan as a player but he has hit the ground running on the broadcasting end, he has an awesome future in this business

This. The Browns game had nearly 5 minutes of no commentary at the end too. Something technical was happening.
Anybody remember about 20 years ago the Jets-Dolphins game

where the network at the time (I'm going to guess it was NBC still doing AFC games at the time) experimented with a no broadcaster telecast. It was just like being at the game, the only announcing was the PA guy announcing down and distance, and who made the plays to the stadium in the background. was a little odd at first but as the game wore on it was cool and much less distracting than listening to commentary.

Vaguely. That was an era of experimentation and the one I remember more vividly is when they put two color commentators in the booth for a game and scrapped the play by play guy. I remrmber it being a disaster. Not sure which teams were involved, but if I had to bet my life I want to say the game was in san diego
The Bills at Bears week one...

was on Fox as well. That's the first time I learned of this cross-flexing thing.
BTW..

Lynch and Burkhardt were about as horrid as the refs.

How many times did they talk about Arizona's D leading the league in rush D last year? When the game was 8 points and the Giants were driving, they were still talking about the game as if the outcome was decided?

I'd rather the game was on mute.

For me, it was Lynch constantly talking about the Giants playing "assignment D". That got old in a hurry, especially since I have a hard time praising the D for covering assignments while they consistently seem to have breakdowns in both the run and pass game.
I liked Burkhardt

He would have been helped if he were given a better color man to work with.

I remember it and liked it. The casual fan would hate it though and that is who the NFL has been targeting and trying to convert into a more solid fan base in order to keep growing so we will never see it again.
Every game for me

is like that Jets/Dolphins game. I only unmute to hear a penalty call. My thumb was getting a workout, yesterday.

Now, if only they would offer a technology that could remove the bottom screen crawl and the unnecessary down and distance graphic that's superimposed on the field. I could do without the line of scrimmage and the first down line, as well.

I remember it well, it was Weed 16.

I also recall it not be very good, simply because they advertised it as you'll hear the sights and sounds of the NFL as it really happens on the field.

The only thing I really remember was a Dolphin player getting mad and you hearing him yell into one of the mics.........needless to say it never happened again.
since this thread is about NFL on TV

I guess it's as good a place as any for me to state once again how much I hate Al Michael announcing NFL games. What a smug A-Hole!
I found it strange that Diehl..

was doing the Seahawks-Chargers game considering that is a matchup including the defending SB champs and a team that reached the divisional round of the playoffs last year. Honestly, how are Buck and Aikman not doing that game, but doing the Dallas game?

Just goes to show you the east coast bias with national televised games, look at the Giants primetime schedule coming off their year.
