Third and long defense, didn't see the game.

blueblood'11 : 9/15/2014 7:25 am
I don't miss many games but I had a previous commitment. Sounds like there were some penalties that occurred in those situations that prevented them from getting off the field.

Also read a comment somewhere that suggested defensive approach on third and long leaves them vulnerable, which we all knew already, and they got burned again in those situations yesterday. Was that the case.?

I said it last year and I'll say it again this year. If the Giants were going to replace anyone in the coaching staff it should have been Fewell.,
It's round pegs

In square holes again.Perry has to show us how smart he is again. Give these players to another DC and see how good the D would be.

I think another one of our problems, again, the second week in a row, is the longer the yardage is on third down, the easier it is for the opponent to make it. I have no idea why that happens, but it does. You look out there, it’s third and 11, and they make a conversion. They did that a number of times today.
Boy oh boy

If that isn't an indictment on Fewell's ability as the DC to get a better result in those situations I don't what is.

Fewell has our corners in a bail technique where they are just running deep down the field to prevent the big TD. That results in huge holes underneath. It drives me nuts. In the preseason we saw a ton of man coverage and some blitzing. I haven't seen much of either in the regular season. I am not saying blitzing and man coverage is the cure for our defense but at some point you have to trust your guys.
How about picking up a 3rd a 18 on a little pitch to the RB.

It is pathetic how bad we are on 3rd and long. I would love to hear Perry is getting canned today. The D should be carrying this team not holding it back.
That's confounding

Can't Tom see it already with this guys as DC. This has been a staple of this defense since Fewell has been here. Where's Spags when you need a DC with some gonads!
They hit

the quarterback 10 times, sacking him 4, getting 2 more taken down by penalties. The Giants secondary is high-priced Blue Bloods. They are not winning their individual battles. It's as simple as that. Also on the Ellington draw (!) it's obvious the Cardinals went into the game knowing they could get outside on the Giants nickel especially with an asshole like Williams on the field.
For the unwashed masses

Spagnuolo is presently wiping asses in Baltimore. His one season as DC at NO went famously so much so that Payton fired him as soon as he got the key code back to his office. Reason: soft zone play and blown assignments
We seem to be better at third and medium

than 3rd and 25

Perry has a tendency of getting cute on third and forever.
the longer the 3rd down, the easier it is to get it

is that an indictment on fewell? maybe -- but on the other side of the coin we know Coughlin usually says "lack of execution" is the issue.

So what are we doing with player personnel that is different on 3rd and long? A beat writer doing their due diligence should be able to write the story not about how Fewell is on the hot seat, but what specifically is being done on 3rd and long personnel wise to cause the issue.
That 3rd and long conversion...

...one draw play after the Eli pick was disgusting and I do not think it would have been out of line to bench the whole unit.

How does that even happen? So far this year the D has disappointed, specials cost the Giants the game yesterday, but the D has not been impressive.
