NFT: Hipster Doofus defined

I Love Clams Casino : 9/15/2014 11:19 am
"hipster doofus" refers to people who take their coolness very seriously. They listen to underground bands and watch art-house movies. They cultivate their coolness. They work hard at it. They're snooty about it. They are typically less groomed than you average individual. Their hair is longer and showers on any given day are optional. Wool caps are a must. Many plaids are essential. They take their cool to such an extreme, that it's not cool anymore.

Are you a hipster doofus?
Hipsters?

I don't know about music, but no actual hipster enjoys a good art house film. Maybe they say they do, but they don't.

This whole thing felt dated and that explains it. A four year old blog post inspired by a 90s TV show.

Wow. I agree. I was actually gonna say something along the lines of "Congrats on calling out stereotypes that peaked more than 5 years ago," but I didn't want to be a dick.

of listening to underground bands does not automatically deem someone a hipster. Hipsterism is all in the act of commodifying bands, movies, books, etc.

It's one thing to genuinely enjoy an indie band. It's another thing altogether to enjoy that band only after its credibility, obscurity, statement, etc has been calculated.

I don't think it peaked five years ago... or if it did, it definitely hasn't declined since then. At least not in the Bay Area it hasn't.

It's not that the style itself has passed. More that the idea that the idea of a 'hipster' was something new or fresh to be called out has passed. Not to mention that the kind of hipster Kramer was from a completely different era. So the original reference from 4 years ago, using a specifically applied phrase from 15-20 years ago, then stolen here and presented as new, was already muddled.
