This has been an issue for years. What does everyone make of this? Is this knock on PF or players?
"I think another one of our problems, again, the second week in a row, is the longer the yardage is on third down, the easier it is for the opponent to make it. I have no idea why that happens, but it does. You look out there, it’s third and 11, and they make a conversion. They did that a number of times today. We have a lot of work to do. We did make a little bit of progress, but nobody wants to hear that. We lost. There’s no excuse for it. I did see a little bit better play."
I cant stand Fewell and his calls on 3rd down...he always drops back into coverage rather than letting DRC and Prince do what they do best and play man....
Do you think TC knows so little about defense that it could really be this simple but TC just doesn't get it?
It annoys the fuck out of me just as much as anyone else but I don't know who's fault it is. Sure, the 2010 season was a while ago but has the philosophy changed to the point where it has completely changed the way we approach 3rd downs? We were middle of the pack in 2011, bad in 2012, slightly better in 2013 (not much) and now it's an issue again.
I think sometimes it's playing back too much.. but on the Ellington run, I didn't feel like it was the defensive call that was the problem, it was that we lost contain, let him get to the outside and we had guys get stonewalled and allow that lane to open right up.
He is always loyal to his coaches at the press mikes. I wouldn't doubt he's dressed them down in private though. However, this year it seems like every week he is demonstrating his frustration in front of the media. Not TC-like. I think that is more telling than anything about the state of our team.
I could not believe my ears listening to that post game conference regarding the defense on 3rd and long.
I sense a sort of frustration with knowing time is running out on his tenure and his grasp on these problems and players.
Now with the McAdoo hiring, either we go McAdoo next year, or a new regime. I will not piss on TC's grave, I have so much respect for the man and the coach, but I sense it's going to be over for TC very soon
Drives me nuts.
Mara said last year that the Offense is broken. TC seems to be saying that the Defense is broken at this time.
Maybe it's just me but I think he's knocking Perry Futile by saying it's the second week in a row. By pointing out that it's the second week, TC is saying that it's not fixed yet and that it's a multiple problem.
Surprised that he was so public in his criticism. I'd be worried if I was Perry Futile for having the Defense being called out in public by the HC.

now, OC's have figured it out and Perry has not really been able to counter-adjust
plus, he has less talent to work with, which is really the most significant factor

It's not about the 3-safety alignment. This defense was being discussed in one publication as the "future of defense" even though the Giants began running it 4 years ago.
But your second point about the talent is the uncomfortable conversation few want to address. How many playmakers/gamechangers/impact players have the Giants had on defense? Guys, who as Antrel Rolle says "play beyond the X's and O's" when either everything breaks down or it's just a matter of a 1-on-1 battle where talent wins out?
Giants certainly don't have enough of those on offense. And if we took a close inspection of the defense, sad to say, but I don't believe we have enough of those guys on that side too and haven't had it for several seasons due to players declining performance, underperformance, injuries, etc.

Personally, I think it's bullshit from Coughlin to gripe about the defense when the offense and special teams were both worse.

It's not an eye-test friendly defense scheme and never has been.
They give up a lot of receptions and a lot of yards. So people are constantly up in arms about the defense being terrible even though they don't often give up a lot of points.
Personally, I think it's bullshit from Coughlin to gripe about the defense when the offense and special teams were both worse.
Here is the only theory I can come up with. It may not be right, but I'm going to try and picture Coughlin's thinking in my head...
Coughlin knows his offense is struggling (and that's before the special teams situation) and cannot afford to get behind early in the game to put even more pressure on them. Thus, in his mind, he is leaning on the defense to lead the way right from the start of the game and make it uncomfortable against a QB who hadn't played in a regular season game in 3 1/2 years.
Instead, the Cardinals march 80 yards down the field (aided by a few penalties) and stick in the end zone. It set a terrible tone to the game.
Now later as the team fights back and goes up 14-10, the Cardinals are starting at their own 7 late in the 3rd. You figure a stop there and you can think about putting the game away. Instead, the defense allows them to go 75 yards to cut the game to 1 point and force the offense to make those 4th quarter plays or else risk potentially losing the game.
What happens? Cruz drops the pass. Ginn punt return TD. Demps fumbles. Bink, bink, boom.
So while the numbers say the the defense played well. Coughlin is probably thinking of those situations inside the game where he feels the complexion of the game changed before that 3 play sequence that eventually changed the game for real.
Losing Beason...ugh! Thurmond...damn.
