And it's on the news here too. Sad. Just seems like these things don't end well. Hope this is an exception.

My daughter is a UVA third year, and lives on 14th street, not too far from where this girl disappeared. Needless to say, I'm very concerned. She and her roommates are upset, as you might expect.

This is just off campus, in an area where many students live.

chances are that other than Clarke and Murphy these incidents aren't linked, but it remains unsettling.

also, this is the downside of so rigorously enforcing no alcohol policies in the dorms

these policies privilege protecting the school from liability over the safety of students.

but at this point the corner and its environs are generally safe. The crime has shifted downtown.

But it does seem like this kind of thing happens much more than it should in what overall is a very nice, medium sized town, and has for a long time. What's more disturbing is that so many of these aren't connected at all - it's not one guy that's been doing it for years and evading detection. A while back there was even a BBIer (don't remember who) whose niece or cousin was murdered by a guy who broke into her home in Cville.

I don't ever remember feeling unsafe around Cville, whether it was the Corner or Downtown or whatever, but then I'm not a woman so I wouldn't be the target of these guys. When I was in school, however, was when the serial rapist was at large and a lot of girls I knew wouldn't walk around the Corner or the Rugby Rd area at night without being in a large group.

She is on a videotape at 12:46 leaving McGrady's pub, apparently intoxicated, headed east towards Preston Avenue. This is 35 minutes before she texted her friends that she was lost. If she was headed east on Preston, that is not a great place to be, IMO -- fairly commercial, car repair shops etc., a bit rundown looking.

from McGrady's is a pretty straight and well-lit trip downtown. I'm sure they'll scour every ATM camera and the like along the way and see if they can figure out where she might have gotten sidetracked.

14th and Wertland is a block off the Corner. Don't know how she could have been lost around there.

Just was exchanging messages with a friend from those days who lived near the corner of Page and 10th one year (I never lived around there, I lived a ways down JPA both years I lived off-Grounds) and said that it wasn't unusual to see some pretty skeevy characters roaming around at night.

I believe the report that she texted from 14th and Wertland at 1:20 was wrong. New reports are that the video at McGrady's is the most recent info. I read somewhere that her phone went out at 1:00.

Not familiar with McGrady's. Don't think it was around back in my Cville days.

I never really ventured off the Main St. corridor, so maybe that's why I didn't realize the neighborhoods up around Grady are kind of questionable. Used to go to the Downtown Mall a lot, but always via Main St.

the stuff back there is still in reasonably good shape. There are some questionable neighborhoods in proximity to it, but by and large it's not particularly dangerous. McGrady's is a decent-sized Irish pub and even at that hour I'd imagine there is a fair amount of foot traffic between there and downtown.

Not saying you're wrong, but why would there be a lot of foot traffic between Preston/Grady and downtown at 1:00 a.m.? Most college students don't live that way, to my knowledge.

but I've seen some earlier on Friday and Saturday nights. I believe it's less than a mile to the Mall, all pretty well-lit. I doubt hordes of people, but I don't think it would be out of place.

All I know is my daughter never goes there at night, except if there's a music event or something. The downtown mall doesn't have much going on at 1:00 a.m. for students, I don't think, and there isn't much going on in the area where she was last seen, except the bar she left (maybe others, IDK). I just don't see it as a highly trafficked route late at night.

My nephew is looking at UVa. I told my sister I was glad my niece wound up at NYU. It's weird thinking that way about NYC v. C'ville. But since the 90s, at least, some strange, bad stuff has happened there.

It's still a safe town, they've just had some weird crime. And Randy Taylor is responsible for at least two of those crimes (and we're all assuming something terrible here, hopefully that will not prove the case) and he is now incarcerated.

And I've dated a couple women in C'ville proper (late 90s/early 00s). I've always felt safe there. But it hasn't always been true for the women.

I still remember how those flyers with the sketch of the suspect were EVERYWHERE in 1997.

The adminstration at W&L warns their students after receiving information from Lexington police that the Morgan Harrington murder suspect was seen in the area. I'm guessing someone was just jumpy with another girl disappearing.

since 2010. Only Harrington's remains have been found. And yet they've already decided this girl has nothing to do with the others. It's all strange.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announced that there is no connection solely to avoid general panic and rumors.

Not related to all this, but still a bit of local murder stuff - I didn't realize they had never solved the Colonial Parkway murders.

I agree with your jumpiness theory. I'm pretty sure all the authorities have is a very generic looking drawing of a light skinned black male. They don't have a named suspect I don't think. Anyone who reported seeing someone who looked like that drawing definitely was on high alert.

I went to NYU LAW. It was skeevy from 1986-89, but the area got a lot better after Clinton and Giuliani came to power. Crime everywhere in the city dropped, and removing the porn theatres from Times Square helped a lot.

6th Ave and West 3rd can still be a little hairy at night, but other than that period in the late 80s, prior to crime peaking everywhere in the US in 1991, I always felt safe in the city because so many people were around.

I have gotten harassed a couple times while I was walking by myself...once down West 4th-to-West 3rd in the Village in 1987, and another time on 41st/42nd...between 5th and 6th, along the northern side of Bryant Park, fairly late at night. In both cases, I cussed out the harassers for being such cowards to harass a woman walking alone at night... In the Village event, I waited to get to the entryway to my dorm, which had a security guard, and then I really let 'em have it.

But this stuff at C-ville (where my mom lived in the early 90s) is really scary. It sounds like a serial killer. Those guys are sneaky opportunists, and they hide and wait around for a woman who looks like she's off her game...upset or intoxicated and alone. That's what Ted Bundy did towards the end of his streak, that psychopathic lizard.

But I am going to tell my daughter (when she's older, anyway) this so many times that she'd do anything to get me to stop - avoid going out and about while intoxicated, whether drunk or high or whatever, and even when sober try to avoid going places alone at night. As schnitzie says, these scumbags are opportunists. Don't give them opportunities. If she was as drunk as she's being portrayed in these stories (and, granted, I have no idea how true that is) I don't know how the friends she went out with could have let her walk off on her own.

They convicted Taylor of the Alexis Murphy murder and he is the prime suspect in the Samantha Clarke murder. Whether he is a suspect in the Harrington murder depends on who you ask. So if he in fact accounted for all three, this looks less like a serial killer and more like a shitty coincidence.

I know I was given a lot of really sound, solid, wise advice and still did a metric shit ton of aggressively stupid garbage at that age.

Blame implies responsibility. In no way am I saying she is responsible for anything untoward that may (or hopefully may not) have happened to her. But was what she did smart? No, it wasn't. It put her in a vulnerable position. I said daughter since we're talking about a young woman here, but I'd say the same thing to my son with perhaps a slightly different emphasis - virtually nothing good comes out of being sloppy drunk, especially in public. Both young men and young women put themselves at risk that way, but I personally believe that the risks are greater for a young woman and it's therefore even more important for them to exercise appropriate caution.

Maybe my daughter one day blows off my advice as children so often do. It won't be for a lack of trying on my part. You can't control what kids do past a certain age, obviously, but I'll do everything I can to try to get them to think carefully about the risks they take and try to minimize them as much as possible. All I can do is try to influence her decision making process - I can't make the decisions for her.

I'm not a helicopter parent at all. Kids don't become equipped to handle the risks life will throw at them when you smother them in a cocoon. I get that, and I understand that you can be smart and do everything right and still be a victim. Bad things happen sometimes, but why make it easier for them to happen?

Behaving carelessly, as she may have, is about average for a college freshman. It's unlikely she was the only girl who got drunk and careless that night. But she appears to have been the only one who may have paid a high price.

I have more questions about her friends behavior, much of it sober.

Different kind of dumb, though, being that I was an incredibly angry, asocial misanthrope in those days, but that's a different story.

Anyway, you're right that it's hardly anything revolutionary, I just plan on beating the subject into the ground as much as possible in the hopes that constant reptition makes it sink in more. That's all.

She may have been lost a half hour earlier or later (we'll find out whether her last text was actually at 1:20, and they will probably be able to get her location from the phone co), but my thinking is that she might have planned to double back and go back to the Corner via West Main.

Detailed retracing of her movements, they're currently looking at all the film they can get from the Downtown Mall, mentions two unspecified locations she went in between leaving the Corner and her walk towards the DTM (presumably friends' apartments. She never actually entered McGrady's, only walked past.

Said people should start searching farm fields since that's where Morgan Harrington's body was found.

The last video that they have has her walking east on the Downtown Mall (away from campus). If that's the case, she really was confused and had no idea where she was going. It's possible I suppose that she hadn't been there much.

The reason they don't know what she said at McGrady's is that they haven't been able to find the man working the door. Seems a bit odd.

Said that he claimed he was following her because he thought she might be in trouble and wanted to make sure she stayed safe. Given the video, though, I don't know if that is plausible.

The theory is that she was lost, but she wasn't acting like someone who was lost. She seemed to be walking very purposefully to the DTM. She passes a bunch of open businesses and other pedestrians but never stops anyone to ask for directions or help. For a drunk girl, she made pretty good time over to the DTM and was continuing to head east. The final text says she's lost, but the location she gives is only a block off the Corner and two blocks from her apartment, and it's a good ways from the DTM in the opposite direction she was last seen walking. Even if she was mistaken about where she was when that text was sent, the area around 14th and Wertland should have been very familiar to her. How could she be somewhere way to the east, near downtown, and think that she was near the Corner??

Honestly, the only thing that makes sense is that whoever abducted her sent that text as a means of buying time by putting out confusing information. Pure speculation but I can't think of another way to explain that text.

There's a big guy with dreadlocks wearing a white shirt and very long, baggy shorts who is walking the opposite way as her and then cuts across the mall and starts following her. Two minutes later, in the Tuel's video, he's walking alongside her.

You can see his shadow come into the picture @ :21 in the first video. He stops there for a few seconds just off camera. When he starts walking again, he appears to be looking across to the other side of the mall. Hannah Graham enters the picture about 10 seconds later on the opposite side of the mall. If you look closely, as she passes you can see Dreadlock Guy cutting across the mall just behind her, and he starts following behind both her and the guy in the doorway who was also following her. It definitely looks pretty suspicious. Whether Dreadlock Guy is the black man Doorway Guy says he saw her chatting with is an interesting question.

According to locals on the Sabre, there were a bunch of sirens wailing about 45 minutes ago and Chief Longo is supposedly going to appear on CNN in a few minutes, so there might be something major coming out.

Keep in mind that she just started her second year, so her orientation of that area might not be as refined as we would have since we spent more time over there. When I was just starting my second year, I didn't have a great handle on the geography connection the areas beyond Rugby Road (like Preston) and how it connected to the downtown mall. Plus, outside of date functions, and and maybe one or two other times, I rarely went to the downtown mall my first year. And if I weren't pledging a fraternity my first year, I would've had even less knowledge of that area.

It wasn't until I got my car and I was living on Grady my third year did I really understand the area well (but I also have a terrible sense of direction).

As to the fact that she was walking fast/running-- when I'm drunk, I tend to walk very fast and sometimes run because I just want to get to where I'm going. For a young girl who felt lost and vulnerable, it doesn't surprise me at all that she is moving fast even if she didn't see an actual threat.

Or aren't very familiar with it. My friends and I went there often, so I suppose I just assumed everyone knew it well.

Also said that the Doorway Guy came forward prior to the video being released, so I guess that supports his story.

The search warrant was issued at 5:45 AM for the car. Whatever they found in the car was enough to get them a warrant for the apartment. Press conference has been scheduled for 3 this afternoon. Locals report that a huge mobile command post truck has been brought into the apartment complex parking lot in the last hour or so.

Hessian Hills, is the same one where another victim disappeared from in 1983. That was Katie Worsky, Glenn Barker did 9 years for her murder.

Copeley apartments, across from Darden. Hessian Hills is just on the other side of Barracks Road Shopping Center.

The POI from the search warrant is not the person of interest described yesterday - different guy. The Daily Mail claims that a CPD spokesman said that they interviewed the dreadlocked guy and they cleared him of involvement....yet the resident of the apartment that was searched is described by a neighbor as being a big man with dreadlocks.

What's more is that the DM quoted the spokesman as saying they "know who the black man in the video is".....but yesterday the chief claimed that no one was actually walking with her in the video from Tuel's, that it was just a shadow.

Hannah Graham was seen in a bar on the Downtown Mall with a man. They believe she got into his car. His car and apartment are the ones searched today. Said no probable cause to detain him, but making it fairly clear that he thinks this guy is the culprit, basically asking local residents to come forward if they have any dirt on this guy. Odd presser, really. Don't usually see a cop go on TV and be so forward about things.

The one they claimed previously wasn't in the one video

well, one sexual assault and one possible sexual assault in which the victim was unconscious and had injuries. That stuff happens but that's a lot for one weekend, probably not connected but who knows?

I hope they find her. Every passing hour/day and it's more and more likely she's deceased.

ID'ed the person of interest as Jesse "LJ" Matthew, a nursing assistant at UVA Medical Center. He apparently admits he bought Graham drinks but denies she left in his car. He said they went their separate ways.

when she was probably on Water St between 4th St. and 5th St. I wonder if she was just drunk and trying to explain where she was.

She was told this evening that a friend of her roommate was in a search party that found Hannah's body in the woods today. I assume that this is solid information, but it's very strange that it has not been reported. Perhaps the police have reasons for not announcing it yet.

I hope that isn't true and I haven't seen it reported anywhere, even on Twitter, but it's something that just about everyone expects is coming.

Its a great town and she loved it, but this is every parents nightmare.

This guy Matthew has a decent sized rap sheet, but it's mostly drunken public nuisance stuff. This guy doesn't seem like a criminal mastermind - could he have so thoroughly covered his tracks that the police found nothing after searching his car and apartment?

He had a 48-hour head start. A lot of the forensic testing takes time, so just because they haven't closed in yet doesn't mean they won't.

Pretty clear that CPD has put out a lot of misinformation about this case (eg: saying the guy walking with her in the Tuel's video was actually a reflection, the original POI description) so the waters are intentionally muddy right now.

I questioned my daughter, and she's as puzzled as we are. The source of the info (a step removed from my daughter)supposedly stands by it. My daughter heard another claim (again a step removed from the source) that some of Hannah's personal effects were found by searchers. She was told of specific items, but I'll withhold that for now, since her info has not proved out so far.

Cabell Hall is right there where Emmett St and JPA come together. Where it goes south at that point is often called "JPA Extended" and it's a very UVA student-heavy area. I lived down JPA Extended during my third and fourth years.

UPDATE: police tell @HenryGraff they went into Jesse Matthew's apartment looking for specific items. They found them. Won't disclose details

In Fluvanna County today. Whether they were looking for him or for her I'm not sure.

Plus they have DNA on that guy, right?

They have DNA from an article of clothing found nowhere near where she disappeared. And there is some thought that Randy Taylor may have been responsible for that too. So nobody really knows, and absent a confession we probably never will, at least as regards Harrington.

They apparently don't have the goods on Matthew, and he seems to be the only suspect. Until they find her body, I don't know what else they have to go on. They've already searched his car and apartment multiple times.

now if they don't find any evidence she was in his car or his apartment they're back to square one.

it surely would be nice if they could at least find this dude.

I'm sure they will eventually but the clock is ticking.

Even if they find him, right now it seems like they've got him on a couple counts of reckless driving and furnishing alcohol to someone <21.

The national coverage has treated CPD pretty poorly, unfairly so in my view. There just doesn't seem to be any evidence - that isn't their fault. They certainly are trying to find some.

I know nothing about criminal procedure in VA. How does it work for this kind of charge? After they arrest him, is there a certain amount of time within which they have to get a grand jury indictment?

so he'll be brought before a judge, advised his rights and appointed counsel if he qualifies (and doesn't want to hire), and bond will be addressed. He'll probably be held without because there is a presumption against bond for that offense. They'll set a date for preliminary hearing usually 4-6 weeks out (usually not shorter, sometimes longer if the attorney seeks a continuance), if the judge finds probable cause he'll certify it to a grand jury which probably meets once a month. It'll probably go to the next grand jury (I believe you have two terms to bring an indictment). Assuming they also find probable cause they'll return a true bill. He'll be arraigned in circuit court and they'll set the matter down for trial. They have five months from the date of certification by the lower court judge to bring it to trial because of Virginia speedy trial rights, though a defendant can waive (and frequently will).

I should remember this from law school, but I'm not certain -- given that a warrant is out for Matthew's arrest, doesn't Camblos have an obligation to let the cops know where Matthew is if he knows, or at least arrange for his surrender? Would he have to reveal phone contact information if he had that?

No. They frequently arrange such surrenders, and he may do so, but I don't think they're ethically obligated, or even allowed, to divulge such information without client consent.

that contrary to internet speculation Matthew is not believed to have been involved in the Alexis Murphy disappearance. Randy Taylor identified another man by name, also African American with dreads, and police investigated and determined that he wasn't present.

Just did some quick internet research on the privilege question. It appears that while the attorney can't reveal the client's whereabouts, many jurisdictions say that the atty. must advise the client to turn himself in, and that he can't represent the client while he is a fugitive. Tough situation for the atty.

Yeah he may have had very limited contact with Matthew, and maybe none since the abduction charge. Maybe third party contact via family members.

"and his family" gives him cover. I suppose the police will question the family and give them a hard time, confiscate their cell phones, etc. if they have reason to believe that the family has talked to him.

It's weird to be that the best reporting in this case has been by the Daily Mail. The Washington Post had a decent summary article in the last couple days, but overall the US press has done a crappy job -- mostly cut and paste of twitter reports by the local TV stations.

I mean it's just an accusation, but it's more substantive than the petty stuff he has on his record in C-Ville. A couple people I know actually know him, they say he is a personable, likeable guy. Not outwardly creepy.
