A University of Virginia student for whom authorities spent much of Monday searching might have gotten lost on her way home from a party early Saturday, authorities said. Search-and-rescue teams from the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office and state and Charlottesville police scoured an area extending from 14th Street Northwest to Wertland Street, including the railroad tracks, looking for Hannah Elizabeth Graham, 18, a UVa first-year from Fairfax County. |

Graham’s disappearance comes four years after Samantha Ann Clarke, 19, disappeared after leaving her Orange County townhouse during the night of Sept. 13, 2010 or the morning of Sept. 14, 2010. Search efforts have been focused on Greene County and Orange County. Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, disappeared from the John Paul Jones Arena on Oct. 17, 2009 while attending a Metallica concert. Her remains were discovered three months later in rural farmland. No arrests have been made and police have named no suspects. In November 2012, DaShad Laquinn “Sage” Smith, 19, left to meet a friend on West Main Street but never came home. Searches in the area and outside of the area turned up nothing and Smith remains missing. |
“There is a location at the railroad bridge and Preston Avenue where people do tend to congregate,” Longo said. “Perhaps she was uncomfortable as she walked by.”

Honestly, the only thing that makes sense is that whoever abducted her sent that text as a means of buying time by putting out confusing information. Pure speculation but I can't think of another way to explain that text.
You can see his shadow come into the picture @ :21 in the first video. He stops there for a few seconds just off camera. When he starts walking again, he appears to be looking across to the other side of the mall. Hannah Graham enters the picture about 10 seconds later on the opposite side of the mall. If you look closely, as she passes you can see Dreadlock Guy cutting across the mall just behind her, and he starts following behind both her and the guy in the doorway who was also following her. It definitely looks pretty suspicious. Whether Dreadlock Guy is the black man Doorway Guy says he saw her chatting with is an interesting question.

Keep in mind that she just started her second year, so her orientation of that area might not be as refined as we would have since we spent more time over there. When I was just starting my second year, I didn't have a great handle on the geography connection the areas beyond Rugby Road (like Preston) and how it connected to the downtown mall. Plus, outside of date functions, and and maybe one or two other times, I rarely went to the downtown mall my first year. And if I weren't pledging a fraternity my first year, I would've had even less knowledge of that area.
It wasn't until I got my car and I was living on Grady my third year did I really understand the area well (but I also have a terrible sense of direction).
As to the fact that she was walking fast/running-- when I'm drunk, I tend to walk very fast and sometimes run because I just want to get to where I'm going. For a young girl who felt lost and vulnerable, it doesn't surprise me at all that she is moving fast even if she didn't see an actual threat.

That was in the parole days. He got 18, pulled 9. They never found her body though, so it was probably a plea.
What's more is that the DM quoted the spokesman as saying they "know who the black man in the video is".....but yesterday the chief claimed that no one was actually walking with her in the video from Tuel's, that it was just a shadow.

Its a great town and she loved it, but this is every parents nightmare.
Also she was apparently a nursing student and he is a nursing assistant so it is possible they knew each other prior to this evening. They anticipate having the forensic tests back on Monday or Tuesday, so they should have some evidence as to whether or not she was in his car and in his apartment.
This guy Matthew has a decent sized rap sheet, but it's mostly drunken public nuisance stuff. This guy doesn't seem like a criminal mastermind - could he have so thoroughly covered his tracks that the police found nothing after searching his car and apartment?

He had a 48-hour head start. A lot of the forensic testing takes time, so just because they haven't closed in yet doesn't mean they won't.
