I can't get over the officiating this past weekend.

BlueHurricane : 9/16/2014 8:28 am
Probably don't need a new thread on this but whatever. I'm beat down after this week in the NFL.

The refs directly changed the outcome of EVERY game I watched with incorrect calls. Not calls I think we're incorrect. Calls that were proven incorrect and talked about while they happened by the announcers. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in my 30+ years of watching the NFL. Man I miss the game I fell in love with. This game is shit and will most likely have me completely soured as a fan before long. Part of me thinks the NFL did it on purpose to direct attention away from the off field crap of last week.

Hopefully there is enough of an uproar over it to cause some changes.
We needed something like..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2014 8:35 am : link
the Harvin TD to be a game winner to spark any sort of outrage.

Otherwise, a few comments are made about illegal contact in one breath being a horrific call, and in the next breath, the analyst is pointing out the penalty totals and how undisciplined the team is.

Outrage must come from within and I don't see that happening until a horrid call decides a game.
Other than Giants games, I'm pretty much done.

I've barely been interested the first two weeks. And now I just don't care much at all.
Collinsworth

sealed the deal for me Sunday night. I unmute to listen to penalty calls or play reviews.

When the Martellus Bennet catch was overturned, Collinsworth, after a bit of discussion with Al Michaels said, "Whatever."

When a color guy gives up, it's time for me to do the same. The officiating has been abominable. Twenty seven accepted penalties Sunday night? Ridiculous.

I just don't understand the motive of the NFL to diminish their product. They are smart people and must be aware how they are turning off their fan base.
I felt the same way.

Its been a long time since a loss bothered me as much as that one did, but it really had more to do with the officiating. It just sucks the fun out of watching. Same with the other games.

Not quite the Harvin TD, but the 2 penalties at the end of last night's game led to the Eagles victory. Missed a pretty blatant illegal contact/PI on PHI in the red zone that kept the Colts from making it a 2 possession game. Then a couple plays later a horrid "horse collar" call against the Colts negated what would've been a 3rd and long on the Eagles game winning drive.

How the Harvin play is not getting more attention is beyond me
BlueHurricane : 9/16/2014 8:51 am : link
The sideline official is on camera pointing out the player stepping out of bounds. I am assuming the official does what he is supposed to do and allows the play to finish so replay can make the change. How it gets to the point where it is not replayed is something that needs to be looked at. Anyone with a mind for conspiracy theories would easily point out gambling being a possibility. Maybe Dean Blandino had the over????
I watched a little

non Giants games. Mostly just the Giants.
Some of the calls were mind boggling. Giants benefited, as well as were hurt by, some of these calls. Overall, my impression is that the league is looking for basketball scores for games. triple digit scores on a regular basis. having a hand anywhere near an offensive player is cause for a flag.
But those penalties..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2014 8:54 am : link
didn't outright decide the game. We need a botched call on the decisive TD like the one in the GB-Seattle game to get the real discussion going.

Frankly, even the ESPN guys stopped talking about the horsecollar once the Eagles got the ball.
Last night took the cake for me.
Tittle 9 20 64 : 9/16/2014 8:54 am : link
Fucking Eagles were given that game with two horrendous calls. Should say one bad non-call and one bad call.

I can't stand the stark contrast between the Sunday Night Game...
Britt in VA : 9/16/2014 8:57 am : link
and the Monday Night Game.

Sunday Night: Flag Fest
Monday Night: Let them play

It's just not a level playing ground when they intrude that much into the outcome of a game.
It's starting to feel like the official team you draw...
Britt in VA : 9/16/2014 8:58 am : link
is nearly as important as home field advantage, if not more.
Also..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2014 8:58 am : link
the networks bring these former officials in to comment, but in the end it goes nowhere. Gerry austin admitted the call was blown and that was that. End of story.

There should be some follow-up when that happens.
I was really PO'd with that Eagles win last night.
Big Blue '56 : 9/16/2014 8:58 am : link
The officiating was so bad, I was tempted to just follow the Giants games online and if they won, watch it on NFL Rewind, as to watch it LIVE with HOW the officials keep throwing flags is making me ill. I don't live my life that way..

I'll see how I feel come Sunday..
It's a disgrace

The Colts/Eagles game was the icing on the cake. The missed call on Ty Hilton, despite the horrid/questionable play calling that last late in the game, and the phantom horse-callor tackle were just a few illustrations for ineptitude as far as the officiating is concerned. I know the Giants will most likely not catch up to Philly and the division and season looks out of reach, but it's always a good day or night when the Eagles lose.

Agreed. However the amount of flags thrown this year(starting in the pre-season) is startling to me..How does a SB contender like SF have 16 penalties? I mean really? Not too disimilar around the league, imo

But this year the full-time refs are blowing calls like the replacement refs did on a regular basis. In previous years blown calls were less frequent (although they existed)
It's an absolute disaster
ligmen : 9/16/2014 10:58 am : link
they got the run off rule wrong that cost the bucs the game.

Rex didn't call the time out, there should something in place so you know the head coach is the one calling the time out, like a button they hit and it registers to the head ref, there there is no confusion.

It goes on and on, it's just not nearly as fun and and a much more watered down product.
In addition to increasing the quality of the refs themselves
NYerInMA : 9/16/2014 11:01 am : link
The league needs to simplify the rules and make things easier for them whenever possible. Ditching the illegal contact penalty while preserving defensive holding and blatant PI would be a step in this direction.

it here and I agree. The NFL is becoming an unwatchable disgrace. I'm not certain what Goodell was trying to do by making it this way, but he has failed. I am shifting my allegiance to college football. I don't like outcomes determined by subjective reff'ing. It also makes it easier to detach when the Giants are 0-2 and it's looking like the season is already done.

Nothing will change.

What I find unfathomable on the Harvin TD is that no one in the SD box saw him step out of bounds. Not a single person? Someone should have notified McCoy and he should have been making an uproar over this. I don't claim to know if this would have changed the outcome in any way, but how does the defending team miss such an easy call? Regardless if it's their responsibility, isn't someone from the team reviewing this to give the coach a headups?

You can bet your last dollar that if the Colts were trailing by 7 instead of leading by 7, that pass interference call would have been made.

The NFL wants every game coming down to the last drive, and if there's anything the officials can do to make sure that happens, they're going to do it.

For the first time in my life, other than with the Giants, I can't sit and watch football for 8+ hours on Sunday. It's just not that entertaining any more.

This isn't me making some claim. I know the NFL isn't reading this and I know I'm just one measly person. But this is my genuine experience.

was a HS game. Don Bosco vs. St Thomas FL.

Bosco has a d-lineman listed at 6'9".

Had to shut the Sunday game off at half. The refs made it unwatchable. This has been the worst start to a season I can recall in 40 years of following football.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 9/16/2014 1:26 pm : link
1) The non-call on the Philly INT is what really bothers me. How do you go out of your way to call Illegal Contact, yet still miss blatant defensive holding and PI...on balls thrown directly to the receiver? This happened in our game as well. They called a ton of Contact for both teams, yet when Parker has his arm grabbed and held on a ball in the air to him, there is no call. Explain it!

2) I'm in the group that really has mild interest in the rest of the games. Part of it is having 3 kids, I don't have the luxury of sitting and watching all day. But, even on Sunday Night or Monday Night, I won't sit and watch the whole game. I'll flip back and forth, leave it on for background noise without really paying attention, or outright not watch. The giants games are the only games I watch. If so many people are in the same boat, how is the league not noticing? How is viewership up?

They're probably more aware of the fact that they're merely annoying their fan base. Realistically, how many people are watching less football because of this? Not many.

They were talking about the likely changes that will be forthcoming next year. Supposedly a further move to the college system is likely. You can listen below.

I maintained at the time that they weren't any different than the regular Refs, but they didn't have the creds, so everyone wailed.

in regards to calling penalties.

The place where they failed was in keeping the flow of the game going, and through no fault of their own, players basically taking advantage (fighting, pushing, etc. with no regard to being penalized).
If you listen to interview Periera is basically saying
BlueHurricane : 9/16/2014 5:12 pm : link
The competition Committee has made it impossible to officiate a game. They have dictated changes to everything a ref has learned from the time they started to learn their craft. It is well worth a listen. Hopefully the uproar will continue.

I dunno Matt. I just can't see this fan dissatisfaction registering with the NFL unless it's substantial -- say, if 10% or more of fans just stop watching or spending money on the NFL altogether. And I don't see that happening.
