Probably don't need a new thread on this but whatever. I'm beat down after this week in the NFL.
The refs directly changed the outcome of EVERY game I watched with incorrect calls. Not calls I think we're incorrect. Calls that were proven incorrect and talked about while they happened by the announcers. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in my 30+ years of watching the NFL. Man I miss the game I fell in love with. This game is shit and will most likely have me completely soured as a fan before long. Part of me thinks the NFL did it on purpose to direct attention away from the off field crap of last week.
Hopefully there is enough of an uproar over it to cause some changes.
Otherwise, a few comments are made about illegal contact in one breath being a horrific call, and in the next breath, the analyst is pointing out the penalty totals and how undisciplined the team is.
Outrage must come from within and I don't see that happening until a horrid call decides a game.
When the Martellus Bennet catch was overturned, Collinsworth, after a bit of discussion with Al Michaels said, "Whatever."
When a color guy gives up, it's time for me to do the same. The officiating has been abominable. Twenty seven accepted penalties Sunday night? Ridiculous.

Not quite the Harvin TD, but the 2 penalties at the end of last night's game led to the Eagles victory. Missed a pretty blatant illegal contact/PI on PHI in the red zone that kept the Colts from making it a 2 possession game. Then a couple plays later a horrid "horse collar" call against the Colts negated what would've been a 3rd and long on the Eagles game winning drive.
Some of the calls were mind boggling. Giants benefited, as well as were hurt by, some of these calls. Overall, my impression is that the league is looking for basketball scores for games. triple digit scores on a regular basis. having a hand anywhere near an offensive player is cause for a flag.
Frankly, even the ESPN guys stopped talking about the horsecollar once the Eagles got the ball.
Sunday Night: Flag Fest
Monday Night: Let them play
It's just not a level playing ground when they intrude that much into the outcome of a game.
There should be some follow-up when that happens.
I'll see how I feel come Sunday..

Shove that flag up your fucking ass -refs
The Colts/Eagles game was the icing on the cake. The missed call on Ty Hilton, despite the horrid/questionable play calling that last late in the game, and the phantom horse-callor tackle were just a few illustrations for ineptitude as far as the officiating is concerned. I know the Giants will most likely not catch up to Philly and the division and season looks out of reach, but it's always a good day or night when the Eagles lose.
The Pugh call, might've been one of the worse

Garbage ass call on Pugh

And it exists for every sport in every league in the world.

Agreed. However the amount of flags thrown this year(starting in the pre-season) is startling to me..How does a SB contender like SF have 16 penalties? I mean really? Not too disimilar around the league, imo
And it exists for every sport in every league in the world.
But this year the full-time refs are blowing calls like the replacement refs did on a regular basis. In previous years blown calls were less frequent (although they existed)
Rex didn't call the time out, there should something in place so you know the head coach is the one calling the time out, like a button they hit and it registers to the head ref, there there is no confusion.
It goes on and on, it's just not nearly as fun and and a much more watered down product.
What I find unfathomable on the Harvin TD is that no one in the SD box saw him step out of bounds. Not a single person? Someone should have notified McCoy and he should have been making an uproar over this. I don't claim to know if this would have changed the outcome in any way, but how does the defending team miss such an easy call? Regardless if it's their responsibility, isn't someone from the team reviewing this to give the coach a headups?
You can bet your last dollar that if the Colts were trailing by 7 instead of leading by 7, that pass interference call would have been made.
The NFL wants every game coming down to the last drive, and if there's anything the officials can do to make sure that happens, they're going to do it.
This isn't me making some claim. I know the NFL isn't reading this and I know I'm just one measly person. But this is my genuine experience.
Bosco has a d-lineman listed at 6'9".
Had to shut the Sunday game off at half. The refs made it unwatchable. This has been the worst start to a season I can recall in 40 years of following football.
2) I'm in the group that really has mild interest in the rest of the games. Part of it is having 3 kids, I don't have the luxury of sitting and watching all day. But, even on Sunday Night or Monday Night, I won't sit and watch the whole game. I'll flip back and forth, leave it on for background noise without really paying attention, or outright not watch. The giants games are the only games I watch. If so many people are in the same boat, how is the league not noticing? How is viewership up?
They're probably more aware of the fact that they're merely annoying their fan base. Realistically, how many people are watching less football because of this? Not many.
Is there anything more than uproar though? Are either of them mentioning any sign or threat of decreased viewership or attendance?
How do you figure this? That was the absolute correct call........the refs suck but let's not be making stuff up.

I would highly recommend listening when it is archived. There is obvious uproar over the new rules and the issues they have created.

They were talking about the likely changes that will be forthcoming next year. Supposedly a further move to the college system is likely. You can listen below.
Pope & Pereira - ( New Window )
Mike, the funny thing is they did a comparison once the real refs came back. Guess what? They had just as many errors, some even worse then the replacements.

we would be screaming for the "real" "professional" Refs back!

I maintained at the time that they weren't any different than the regular Refs, but they didn't have the creds, so everyone wailed.
Same.
The place where they failed was in keeping the flow of the game going, and through no fault of their own, players basically taking advantage (fighting, pushing, etc. with no regard to being penalized).
I dunno Matt. I just can't see this fan dissatisfaction registering with the NFL unless it's substantial -- say, if 10% or more of fans just stop watching or spending money on the NFL altogether. And I don't see that happening.
