Andrew Luck

Britt in VA : 9/16/2014 9:26 am
The guy is fun to watch. Great arm, smart, no doubt in my mind he will be a top notch QB in the league.

However, I counted at least six passes last night that bounced straight up in the air, then fell harmlessly to the ground with defenders in the area.

Is that a technique they teach at the Manning Passing Academy?

Don't think so.

Ours don't fall harmlessly to the ground
its one of the downsides with having a shit O-Line
UConn4523 : 9/16/2014 9:27 am : link
you throw more picks because you have no choice but to take chances.
Not his best game last night......
BillKo : 9/16/2014 9:29 am : link
but the Eagles pressured him, and their OL isn't that good (thankfully Luck is mobile at this point in his career).

They were committed more to the run, and still had the game wrapped up if not for that bad non-call on PI.

Horrible play calling at the end of the game too......with 2 minutes and tied, you put the game in Luck's hands/arm. Two straight runs (with Richardson) was just mind boggling.

He is fun to watch
Motley Blue : 9/16/2014 9:39 am : link
but Bradshaw was extremely to fun to watch last night.

He looked like the best player on the field for the Colts.
Foles outplayed him

The real fun player to watch is sproles. Man is that guy still a game breaker. Makes you wonder what the saints were thinking.

Sometimes I really wonder what people see. Foles was terrible. He missed multiple wide open WR's down the field and all of his yards were dump offs and runs by playmakers. Foles had an awful game.

I miss him too, he was great last night...

But like I said in the game thread last night... 8 ankle surgeries and a neck vertabrae fusion.

The guy is not going to age well. I'm thinking Earl Campbell.

Love Ahmad, though.
yes, he'll likely break down again before the end of the season
Greg from LI : 9/16/2014 10:03 am : link
But I simply love the guy as a player. He exemplifies everything you want to see in a football player. Arguably the single toughest guy I've ever seen in the league.
How did anyone..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2014 10:06 am : link
watch that game and think Foles outplayed Luck?

I thought the non-stop praise for Luck was over the top by Gruden, and it was interesting to hear Gruden complain about playcalling and not the QB on failed drives, but Foles had several poor passes and the Eagles offense relied on McCoy's running and sproles taking 2 yard passes well downfield on his own.
I've loved Ahmad
Big Blue '56 : 9/16/2014 10:09 am : link
since his first preseason carry in 2007 which I believe was a pitch he took for significant yardage. A money player. All-time great Giant imv..I hope he's done well with his money. I also hope he retires soon. I recall reading(far from an isolated incident of course) how when Namath was in his late 30s, early 40s, it would take him a half hour to get out of bed(not referring to his conquests)..Hyperbole or not, that's an awful way to live your life after retiring.
Somebody posted Foles passing stats and the YAC stats...
Britt in VA : 9/16/2014 10:09 am : link
last night, and if I recall correctly, like 2/3 or some insanely high number of the yards thrown for were YAC.
there's no way Foles outplayed him
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/16/2014 10:12 am : link
Luck is just the complete package from a skills standpoint. Even Aaron Rodgers isn't quite as athletic or nearly as strong, although obviously Rodgers is a better pure passer at this point. You can tell why Luck was hyped as a once in a decade QB prospect. His arm strength was the only question coming out of college and he answered that question with ease.

But the Colts are just a meh football team. They really need Mathis back.
That Colts meltdown looked like a Giants meltdown last night.
Britt in VA : 9/16/2014 10:12 am : link
I could have seen that same thing happening to us.

He was open a few times and Luck tried to hit him on a fade but it wouldv'e been a tough catch. It is amazing how quickly you can go from a top player to just barely hanging on in this league.

Foles didn't play well...the thing is he also had several tipped passes fall incomplete. With the Giants if the ball goes up in the air it's intercepted. I don't know what the deal is.

Yeah, 9/10 times, if Eli's pass is tipped in any way, shoulder pad, ankle, helmet, hands, off the jock, off the gatorade bucket... it's getting picked.
I tohught Foles blew also

missed a ton of passes and was very high the whole game. With the way McCoy/Sproles ran lastnight, he should have been a lot better.

There's a reason why the 2011 Superstar was ignored by the entire league in FA and why he only received an embarrassing 1 year deal..

Hakeem, do you really think your tank job last year wasn't noticed?
it's still shocking to me
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/16/2014 10:23 am : link
how mediocre Trent Richardson has ended up being. He was so damn nasty in college. He just ran with such ferocity. But he looks so timid in the NFL. Bradshaw is still clearly the better back on that team, as long as he stays healthy. And last night was one of Richardson's more productive games and I still came away with a negative impression.

Just amazing to me what a bust this guy is. He looked like such a sure thing. Maybe he resurrects his career in a few years and drops the bust label like Reggie Bush has, but I just don't see it.
I have continually harped on this...
BillKo : 9/16/2014 10:40 am : link
about Foles.

Watch the game, and watch the throws he has to make.

They are all extemely easy. The only tough throw he makes is the pass in the seam to the TE (and due to arm strength, this is the only "tough" pass he can throw).

He's slow (not talking about running speed) - in everything he does - setup, velocity of ball.

You never see him throw a 15 yard out.

I've come to to conclusion that a backup QB could easily run that offense, due to the pace, and extremely easy throws.
Osi,
Big Blue '56 : 9/16/2014 10:41 am : link
Having never seen him in College, I only "know" TR from reports and BBI. To your point, Ced Benson(as a Bengal) had a rather productive career after failing with the Bears. Decent comparison?

Here's something a pro-Reese guy will say about Sproles. JR/TC fucked up royally by not going after Sproles when he was available from SD..He's older now, but I STILL would have gone after him..A true fuck-up imv
Being in the same backfield with Bradshaw
Motley Blue : 9/16/2014 10:46 am : link
might benefit Richardson. He looked pretty inspired on a few of his runs last night. Mostly the ones right after Bradshaw had just made a good play.
Luck
dcgiantsfan : 9/16/2014 10:48 am : link
The love for that guy is off the charts!! I have yet to hear one negative thing about his play. While I must admit, last night was the first time I've watched him play an entire game. But it's heard for me to embrace the love based on that. Additionally, I just am not impressed by the Colts. They appear to be a much lesser version of Manning era in Indy. No defense...even with Mathis on the field, and there line is not good either.
I miss Bradshaw and Jacobs
Johnny5 : 9/16/2014 10:52 am : link
Also, on the Foles vs. Luck thing. If the teams reversed QBs last night, the Eagles would have won by a whole lot more than 3 points. IMO.
Yeah the Luck love is understandable but over the top.

Flip a coin. If they sign him and he gets hurt, Reese is getting drawn and quartered for signing an older player since older players are more prone to injury.

Yep, that sounds like good comparison. I just searched up recent RBs selected in the Top 10 and Benson was the guy who reminded me the most of Richardson.

Both guys were power backs with good but not great speed/quickness. Both guys dominated in college. Both guys were Top 5 draft picks.

Maybe Richardson can put up a few workhorse 1000 yd seasons to shed the outright bust label like Benson did.
Agree about Richardson, Osi
Greg from LI : 9/16/2014 11:07 am : link
I've watched Trent since he was breaking Emmitt Smith's records at Escambia High in Pensacola, and I've been really shocked by how poorly he's played as a professional. You rarely see the speed-power combo that made him such a high draft pick. Frankly, these days he runs like Ron Dayne.
Which is amazing, because he looks like a greek god.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/16/2014 11:11 am : link
the guy is built like a brick bunker.
Some of it is that the Bama OL makes a lot of RBs look good
Greg from LI : 9/16/2014 11:13 am : link
But he was an absolute load to bring down in college and broke a ton of tackles. He hasn't done that at all in the NFL.
Andrew Luck is the real deal.
kmed : 9/16/2014 11:15 am : link
Someone who has watched 1 game, last nights, and then came to the conclusion that he's not legit? IMO, if Luck was in a system like NO, GB or Denver, he'd be right up there with those QB's. I'm not sure there is a weakness to Andrew Luck. Physically, he's blessed. Intelligence, he's blessed. Determination...it's there. Ego, the dude's got none, he's a prototypical team player. Luck is for real.
Luck's weakness is clearly hair, facial hair included
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/16/2014 11:18 am : link
...

The Bama OL definitely helped Richardson (and Ingram), you have to take that into consideration. But Eddie Lacy played behind a similar OL right after Richardson, and didn't look nearly as explosive as Trent. But here we are in the NFL and Lacy looks like an absolute load while Richardson looks like he barely belongs. Just makes no sense to me how much better Lacy looks based on what I saw in college.
And Richardson looked better than Ingram behind that same line
Greg from LI : 9/16/2014 11:22 am : link
Yet, while Ingram has been pedestrian in NO, he's been much better than Richardson too. I agree, it's mystifying. I don't know if it's conditioning, desire, inability to learn the offense or what, but something's missing with him.

it's good to see them rotate him in there, instead of putting the burden of the running game on Bradshaw......this is how we should have used him, instead of running him into the ground....

GIANTSr01 : 9/16/2014 12:36 pm : link
maybe it's my perception, but his rookie year I thought he looked a lot like AB in his angry running style and actually broke quite a few tackles. Found this which somewhat supports that:

Quote:
Alright, so what do we know? We know Trent Richardson is a big back with a good speed score who is a more than capable pass catcher out of the backfield. We also know that, while not particularly good, T. Rich has probably only been slightly worse than you’d expect before contact. The bad news is that, despite breaking tackles as well as anyone in the league, Richardson has been transcendently bad in generating yards after contact and it’s gotten to the point where its impacting an NFL teams’ desire to play him in games. If we were going to turn this data into a narrative it would probably sound something like: “The biggest issue Richardson is having is that he has a hard time getting restarted once his feet are stopped…” and in fact that’s a direct quote from this article by Ben Muth.

Breaks tackles, goes no where - ( New Window )
and Foles was awful last night
GIANTSr01 : 9/16/2014 12:39 pm : link
if not for YAC by Sproles/McCoy (and horrid tackling by Indy), his numbers would've blown. He had WRs with a step or 2 on the CBs down the field a few times and overthrew them.
