NGT: Here we go again - another football league

That’s right, the city of Hartford will be home to a charter franchise of the North American Football League whose inaugural season will kick off in the spring of 2015.

I know what you’re thinking, ‘Another pro football league that isn’t the NFL? Remember the UFL?’ Yeah, the Hartford Colonials didn’t really work out, only lasting a season with the United Football League, but that doesn’t matter to NAFL founder Chris White.

Plus, the NAFL won’t compete with the NFL directly. The NAFL will play a spring/summer schedule to avoid competition with the big boys, the NCAA’s, and high school’s fall schedules. The NAFL will sign players that have been cut by the NFL but will not market itself as a development outfit for the NFL.

NAFL - ( New Window )

Who the hell thought up that name?
If you

go to their FB page. People complained about that name. They put it up for vote and it will be the Hartford Colonials now
I don't really see the harm

They realize they can't compete with not just the NFL but also the college market and even "Friday Night Lights" High school then what's the issue? There might actual be some decent competition if they take Undrafted guys and cuts throughout the season etc. I welcome it for the Summer.
That's cute.

A league of their own

This is very easy to dismiss
j_rud : 9/16/2014 1:45 pm : link
But despite the league's popularity it's a very polarizing time. A lot of people are not happy with the NFL. You see more threads about it on a weekly basis. Goodell, the changes he's made, officiating, fantasy football. Who knows, America can be a strange place and you never really know what the next fad will be. Will people ever "switch" league allegiances? A lunatic fringe who really hate Goodell might but not enough. But will people watch football in the summer? If the defenses can hit, if there aren't flags every other play and commercial time outs every 3 minutes, a fantasy ticker rolling, if I'm not getting hit with Coors Lite ads from three and a half hours? Who knows, people might watch.
I always thought the other leagues should
Scyber : 9/16/2014 2:00 pm : link
target the spring summer when the NFL has died down. Will provide some football (no matter how bad) during a time when many NFL fans are starving for football. Depending on the timing, I'd imagine some of the guys in this league may be brought into training camps for NFL teams, so it could be an unofficial development league

Except, most of the nation I believe are comprised of casual fans..I doubt they give a fluck about the state of the game that us diehards are becoming extremely disenchanted with, imv

The problem I see with any potential league is it would be rife with players jumping ship constantly to try to get onto an NFL, CFL, or Arena league team. The turnover, consistency, and play in general would likely be horrendous to start with. The play IMO would only improve once the players in the league became such lower tier talent-wise that they would never even be invited to an another training camp where the potential to make more money is possible.

It's something I often think of when watching the CFL, that likely the best and/or highest paid players in Arena or CFL would give anything just to be paid and practice as an NFL practice squad player.

this is where the XFL went wrong, amongst many other things
SHO'NUFF : 9/16/2014 2:59 pm : link
they went head-to-head against the NFL and lost miserably... Vince McMahon sure has a pair...
A new league should adopt the NFL rules of the 70's
steve in ky : 9/16/2014 3:02 pm : link
and promote that fact.
How is this going to be different than the thriving UFL or XFL
Knineteen : 9/16/2014 3:27 pm : link
By the way, totally didn't realize the UFL folded 2 years ago.....

This...and target 18-22 year old players that don't want to deal with NCAA bullshit.
its possible
jtfuoco : 9/16/2014 3:48 pm : link
that you have intense pre-season camps with 3 a day practices without all the bullshit you see from current NFL CBA you might have a decent product being played. Promote 70s-80s NFL rules put hitting back in the game. Reduce commercials and get some older players with name recognition along with so young talent that does not want to mess with the NCAA and you may have a shot.

Reduce commercials...

Or get a TV contract first...
How long until this is not touted as a novel strategy?

Just about every league tries this and it doesn't work. If they want decent talent, the NFL will have to be invested: start a real development league that plays in parallel with the NFL season. Guys can't play a full season of minor league football and then be expected to play meaningful snaps for an entire NFL season right after that.

After the failure of World League (NFLE). why the hell would the NFL invest in a developmental league when they already have a free one via CFB?

Silly.

I'd rather see a women's pro league.
Geomon : 9/16/2014 5:07 pm : link
Sure it won't be up to the NFL standards but neither will this.
They need something that will make it appealing.
Dr Pepper : 9/16/2014 6:12 pm : link
Maybe a rule where teams can only draft players who played high school ball in the region. A team of all texans vs nj locals.

Never said they would. It'd a huge money loser. But that's the only way it will ever "work."
Got it.
