Cornerback Walter Thurmond III and wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, who had each started one of the Giants’ first two games, were today placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Both players were injured in the team’s 25-14 loss Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals.

Thurmond underwent successful surgery this morning to repair his torn pectoral muscle. The operation was performed by team physician Dr. Russell Warren at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. The typical recovery time for the procedure is three-four months.

A fifth-year pro, Thurmond joined the Giants as a free agent on March 16. He spent his first four NFL seasons in Seattle, where he earned a Super Bowl ring with the 2013 Seahawks.

Thurmond started the season opener last week in Detroit and in two games had four tackles (two solo).

Jernigan has a mid-foot sprain. He was examined by Dr. Martin J. O'Malley, a foot and ankle specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Jernigan will not undergo surgery. He will wear a protective boot and rehabilitate the foot.

Jernigan, a four-year veteran, was the Giants’ third-round draft choice in 2011. He started against Arizona on Sunday, when the Giants opened the game in a three-wide receiver alignment. Jernigan caught two passes vs. the Cardinals and six in two games this season.

Linebacker Jon Beason, who left the Cardinals game in the second half, did not suffer a new injury, but aggravated his previous foot injury. Beason may visit foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. later this week. Dr. Anderson examined Beason’s foot when he suffered the original injury in June.

The Giants filled the openings on their roster by signing wide receiver Julian Talley and linebacker Dan Fox off their practice squad.

Talley, who was originally signed by the Giants in 2012, played in the final two games of the 2013 season. He had two special teams tackles. Talley was waived on the final roster cutdown on Aug. 30. He was signed to the practice squad the following day. Talley spent most of the 2013 season on the Giants’ practice squad.

Fox, 6-3 and 233 pounds, was signed as a rookie free agent from Notre Dame on May 13. He played in all five preseason games and had five tackles (four solo). Fox played in 52 games with 32 starts for the Fighting Irish and had 226 tackles (104 solo), three sacks and two interceptions.

The Giants created another opening on their practice squad by terminating the contract of defensive end Jordan Stanton.

They completed the day’s transactions by signing wide receivers Travis Harvey and L’Damian Washington to their practice squad.

Harvey, 6-2 and 185, was with the team in training camp before his release on Aug. 26. He caught five passes for 68 yards in the preseason.

Washington, 6-4 and 187 pounds, was signed as a rookie free agent by the Dallas Cowboys on May 13 of this year. He was waived on Aug. 2 and awarded the next day to the San Francisco 49ers, who released him on Aug. 30. Washington played in three preseason games for the 49ers and had a four-yard catch and a nine-yard run.

At the University of Missouri, Washington played in 50 games and caught 100 passes for 1,735 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The Giants have one open spot on their 10-man practice squad.

JJ isn't part of the future.

Washington could be, so let's get him playing. And Parker, IMO, is better than JJ.

the moment the mid-foot designation was announced about his injury I thought this would happen. Good to see Talley getting the call to the 53 man, he's worked hard for that chance the last two years. Our LB depth is starting to look really dangerously thin.

Last year, the Giants led the NFL with 91 starter games lost to injury. I'd say we are looking to threaten that number again this year.

Yup, I get it that all teams deal with injuries and have to overcome them, but before any of the media "experts" continue to do things like judge Eli, I think they need to realize that we're on pace to have him throwing the ball to Kevin Gilbride, Jr. shortly.

That's two of what should have been the original 6 WR on IR with OBJ still unable to play. Half the WRs. That's the #3 CB to go along with what looked like the #3 safety. We're down a starting G, the starting MLB and a guy who was the other starting G until he got hurt. And I was told Dallas would be glad to trade their injuries for ours. Doubt it.
And these pearls of wisdom seemed like just yesterday

"I'm not sure why it took us three years to find out Jerrel Jernigan could play," he said while defending the Giants' draft record over the past few years. "We finally put him in a game and we saw that he could play. You have those instances as well."

When asked who is at fault for not putting players like Jernigan into the game, Mara had this:

"Sometimes you have to put younger players in a game and give them a chance to fail, or succeed." Mara said. "It's true not only of him but of other guys as well. It would have been nice if he had gotten in a little sooner. That's not my decision."

Cruz has been in the slot in 3 WR formation which makes his issues much more troubling if you ask me. JJ and Randle have been on the outside.

What defines a bust as a 3rd round player taken 83rd overall

Are Jah Reid, Allen Bailey, Drake Nevis, Johnny Patrick, Shareece Wright, Curtis Marsh, Akeem Dent, Joseph Barksdale, Chris Conte, Kenrick Ellis, Curtis Brown, Alex Green, Sione Fua, Brandon Hogan, Christian Ballard, Luke Stocker, Norris Searcy, Quinton Carter, Kris Durham, Colin McCarthy, David Arkin, Greg Salas, Chimdi Cewaka, Edmond Gates, Casey Mathews

Mason Foster, Jordan Cameron, KJ Wright, Cecil Shorts are good players

Helu is OK, Boling is OK, Acho is starter by need, Kendall Hunter blew out his knee

25 'busts' 4 good players, 3 ok players and 1 TBD

Maybe, like history suggests, most 3rd round players amount to nothing
Now they are dangerously short handed at CB.

Yeah, 3rd rounders are pretty worthless.
Red Dog : 9/16/2014 7:28 pm : link
Let's see who the GIANTS have drafted in the third round.

Mario Manningham, Jay Alford, Justin Tuck, Visanthe Shiancoe, Brad Maynard, Roman Oben, Ed McCaffery, Stephen Baker, John Washington, Jeff Hostetler, Karl Nelson, John Mendenhall, Bobby Duhon, Joe Morrison, Roosevelt Grier, and that Sam Huff guy who is in the Hall of Fame.
stretch234: Sure would like to have Kenrick Ellis at DT
Bobby Epps : 9/16/2014 7:32 pm : link
instead of JJ, with Ellis taken 11 picks after JJ. Hankins and Ellis at DT would have made it very difficult for teams to run inside.

I agree there were a lot of 3d Round busts when JJ was taken. But, the question is: why take a 5'8" WR so early? That's what I don't understand.

This year we took a big DT, Jay Bromley, in the 3d Round. Maybe he'll work or he won't but I wouldn't criticize Reese for taking a big guy this high.

What was Reese thinking in taking such a little guy so high?

. . . he was thinking about another undersized return specialist, drafted in an early round, who cost the Giants their season and helped send the Eagles to the playoffs just a couple months prior.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone expected Jernigan to suddenly forget how to catch punts once he reached the NFL.

Height/size is not a good reason not to take a player in the 3rd round, plenty of great playmakers that are small desean, sproles, and plenty of others, guys that can help both on offense and on returns. It was just a bad pick. The pick should be about talent, work ethic, intangibles, ability to adapt and learn a pro system etc-and he ended up lacking in most of those categories, couldn't make much happen with the ball in his hands.

Sproles was a 4th Round pick.

I have no objection to either pick. If JJ was a 4th Round pick, I'd have no problem. But JJ was a 3d Round pick and IMO it was too high for a little guy.

I really wanted him in the sixth round.

He's very lean and slenderly built, but the guy has GREAT speed, great height and was a decent route-runner from what I saw of him at Mizzou. He's also a high-character guy. His father was murdered when he was 5. His mother died at his basketball tournament game when he was 15 (and his best friend died that same year) and now, he helps raise his siblings.

Really easy guy to root for. I sure as hell will and I'm stoked we can develop him on the PS
Jernigan no loss, he stinks and was at the end of his rope.
