Punt returner/scat back like Sproles

PetesHereNow : 9/16/2014 7:58 pm
One thing struck me in last night's game. Foles relied on Sproles to get him out of trouble by dumping the ball to the back and letting his speed and elusiveness take over. And, so I ask you, BBI, when was the last time the Giants had such a player, and what is so hard about finding such a player?

The only one in my memory is Meggett in the late 80s/early 90s. I think we had high hopes that Wilson could turn into that kind of player, but it was not to be. I think a scatback type of player could really help Eli.
Love me some scat back.

Most likely not the answer

But that is why we should sign LaMichael James. Hillis doesn't really give us anything that we don't have with Jennings and Williams. James has a different skill set. At worst he MAY be a very good third down option for Eli and he has speed which we desparately lack. If he's been injured alot(I don't know?)then Reese should like him.

Certainly worth a shot, he's young enough to where if he fits the bill, he could be around a while.
Meggett?

Seems like tiki was pretty good at that for a while.
When Sproles was on the trade block

I was a huge supporter of getting him if he was released or trading a late round pick for him. We had our opportunity and did not capitalize.

Before he exploded into the all-purpose back that he was, that's probably the answer to the question. Although, I always thought that Tiki pre-Coughlin went down a little easy.
Sproles' don't grow on trees

they're not a type - he's a very unique player.

That was my first thought watching last night. Then I quickly realized that if we acquired him he would either come up with a 4 month hammy pull/suddenly start regularly getting tripped up by the turf monster/catch an acute case of fumbleitis on returns...who are we kidding?
Or we could have signed

I can think of a few in the league now

McCluster, Sproles, Bush, Jacquiz Rodgers, could probably count Chris Johnson. A smaller type back who can return kicks and punts. It's definitely a type.
Not great at it
St. Jimmy : 9/16/2014 8:36 pm : link
but Delvin Joyce comes to mind.
One thing I've questioned about our roster construction
phil in arizona : 9/16/2014 8:41 pm : link
was the lack of a speed back.

That being said, I'd rather Hillis over a lot of them.
I think David Wilson was going to be that guy too.....
Simms11 : 9/16/2014 8:47 pm : link
Unfortunately we'll never know how he was going to turn out. Very frustrating.
Simms11 with the right answer

Wilson was supposed to be the game breaking rb who could score anytime he touched the ball. And for a while he was looking like he'd be just the scat back we was looking for. But...we all know how things didn't work out as planned.

The good news is that now we all get to kill Jerry Reese for blowing a high draft pick on a guy that got injured.
Twice he was
RetroJint : 9/16/2014 9:05 pm : link
on the market. Twice the Giants failed to get even a whiff. Wilson was never going to be a punt returner nor did he have Sproles route running & catching ability. It's a God-damn shame he ended up with the Trogs.
I can't believe it took so long to point at Wilson

I mentioned Wilson in my OP.
He was had for a 5th round pick...
phil fromphilly : 9/16/2014 9:11 pm : link
In Reese we....uhhhh

All the while I am sure they knew Wilson had a good chance to end up like he did.

The fact that they didn't outbid the Eagle to just to keep him from going somewhere in the division is mind boggling.

If we start 0-5 / 1-6 I think that Reese should be the first to go. The earlier they can get a jump on the GM search the better.
picking up LaMichael James
SHO'NUFF : 9/16/2014 9:22 pm : link
helps take the sting out of losing David Wilson.

Can someone please provide a rough translation of this post. Thank you in advance.

Definitely wanted McCluster in FA. Too bad Titans snagged him early. I guess they were banking on David Wilson to recover.
Sproles would had looked like a mistake ….

Coming to the Giants (with our mediocre blocking O-line).

I can just hear all the whining and complaining around here - "that damn Reese, what was he thinking picking up a under-sized has-been, when had bigger needs !"
