(and I'm sure nobody has heard this before) despise the mother f@#$^&ing Marlins!! The worst fans, the worst announcers, the worst players, knocked us out of making the playoffs twice, bitter assholes who hate NYers for living down here in FL!! AAhhh. That felt better. lol
go Flores' bat
spike : 9/16/2014 9:02 pm : link
he might be a decent no 5 or 6 hitter
I wonder if we went all in on
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:04 pm : link
Tomas if fans would be happy. Kind of scary going into next season season with your only upgrade being a complete ???. I'd be happy and I'd commend management no matter how it worked out. The kid is 23 and would complete this young youth movement. Let him grow right alongside all these kids and lets just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Herrera is a phenomenal
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:08 pm : link
story this year and I think he is going to be great but he doesn't seem ready yet. At this point, I send him to AAA and keep Murphy for 2015. Lets see what Herrera does in AAA and let him get good and seasoned before we decide if we want to trade Murph. We still have until next July to get some value back. Maybe we are well over .500 and keep him. I'd just let it play out. Not a bad thing to have Murph with a guy like Herrera waiting in the wings.
With that home run
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:19 pm : link
Flores has just tied Tejada in home runs..... FOR TEJADA's CAREER!!!! lol

That sounds reasonable and it's probably what the team will do given that Herrera has struggled a little lately. He's only 20 and already shows some pop, so I think he's our future 2b.
FLORES!!!!!

AGAIN!!!!! lol
HAHAHA.
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:24 pm : link
he should have three. He missed one by inches!!
Boom!!!
Stufftherun : 9/16/2014 9:26 pm : link
Despite facing another losing season it's fun watching the kids out there.
Flores is better than Tejada by a MILE
spike : 9/16/2014 9:27 pm : link
.. f Collins. Its not about him. Its about the future.
I'll admit that I had some doubts about him handling the defense at SS
steve in ky : 9/16/2014 9:27 pm : link
He has done better than I expected defensively. Won't be winning any gold gloves, but he hasn't embarrassed himself at all.
and with that home run
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:27 pm : link
Flores has just passed Tejada in home runs.... FOR HIS CAREER!!! lol
uuugh...
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:29 pm : link
this has to be so gratifying for so many of us here. But its bitter sweet. I wanted Flores playing here since fucking April!!!! Who knows what would have happened this year if Flores had gotten a fair shot earlier. Effing Collins.
Well, with Collins most likely coming back
PhiPsi125 : 9/16/2014 9:41 pm : link
next season (ugh) I'm still not convinced he will start the season with Flores there. I seriously thing he roots for this kid to fail. He NEVER compliments him (at least not from what I've seen) and Collins has NO feel for the game.

If Collins is back next season then the have already failed. Plus, I hate his fucking face.
Yeah Im with you...
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:46 pm : link
I still feel like Sandy has forced his hand multiple times this year which actually gives me hope that he'll correct the situation/situations going forward. Its seriously happened like three different times this year. I actually have a mental picture in my mind of Sandy calling Collins into his office and saying..

"Now Terry... I know I said you could choose the lineup and I let you choose Tejada as long as he was hitting but you are going with Flores! But...But...But.... NO BUTS TERRY! You are playing Flores!!! Now run along Terry..."
Haha...
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 9:47 pm : link
And a "Make sure to take a dumdum on the way out!" lol
collins is a middle of the road manager
CGiants07 : 9/16/2014 10:02 pm : link
could do worse or better but he is cheap and players play hard for him so I have no problem allowing him to manage next year but next year its playoffs or bust for him
I absolutely think they should go in hard on Tomas.
arcarsenal : 9/16/2014 10:02 pm : link
Fans will be more excited next year as it stands with Harvey coming back and these young pitchers but if you really want people to start believing the Mets are serious about actually fucking competing again, you sign Tomas. Signing him means losing NONE of our young arms and you could potentially be adding the exact slugger we need and massively upgrade LF.

It's annoying because they won't. But it makes so much fucking sense.
Damn even
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:03 pm : link
Montero looked pretty good their at the end! I don't get how everyone isn't loving this brand of Mets baseball regardless of our record. I never in my entire time as a Mets fan remember there being this much young talent both on the club and yet to break in with the club at one time. Its unreal.

Its like we have 4/5 Doc Gooden's breaking in at the same time, 4/5 closer types that are ALL probably more talented then the best closer we've ever had breaking in at the same time... a young future star catcher with his clone waiting in AAA, a young stud SS, a young stud 2ndbaseman, a young power 1stbasman finally coming into his own with a fair chance, the best defensive CF in the game who can also hit apparently, and oh yeah Nimmo, Conforto, and the rest coming in waves over the next couple years.

Im flying off the handle right now but my god this is refreshing. And 99% homegrown.
Im with you arc
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:05 pm : link
but it doesn't guarantee he hits here. The Cubans are on a nice run but 100 million is a huge risk for a complete unknown. That said I would do it. Roll the dice. These kids are going to be whole lot more than role players next year. We are going to be good regardless.
I bet 95 million
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:09 pm : link
over 7 years gets it done. And we can certainly afford adding 13.5 million next year, especially if we trade Colon. The years would scare me but it wouldn't kill us.
hmm...
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:12 pm : link
Lagares, Murphy, Wright, Duda, Tomas, TDA, Granderson, Flores? I cant even wright out a good lineup. No way Flores and TDA should be hitting that low!
haha.. Collins is so stupid
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:13 pm : link
I hope people are listening to this press conference.

would likely start out at a reasonable number say 7 mil in year 1.

7-10-12-15-15-17-17(7 yr 93mil)
There are few guarantees in baseball.
arcarsenal : 9/16/2014 10:18 pm : link
We can't be gun shy because past signings didn't work out. That's how you miss the boat on guys who can be special. If the Mets signed the guy and he didn't pan out, I would never hold it against the Mets. I'd say it was shit luck but I'd still be glad they were aggressive in trying to make this team better and good enough to really compete. We've been a losing baseball team for 6 seasons in a row now and we've been rebuilding for more than half of that. It's time to make moves and start trying to win a World Series again.
Im with you...
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:22 pm : link
I'd do it. Why not? Then almost the entire team is mid 20's or lower and pretty much set for the next 6 years. Granderson and Wright can be the vets and mentors and I think they'll both bounce back but we won't really have to do much else. Nimmo/Conforto replaces Granderson in a couple years.
So
DanMetroMan : 9/16/2014 10:27 pm : link
it's THAT time of the year again when people on twitter think Calhoun or Marte are reasonable targets without giving up an INSANE price? lol
I'd send Flores
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:27 pm : link
to the same fat camp all over again and have him work all offseason on footwork and positioning. This kids going to hit here.
I'd love Marte
pjcas18 : 9/16/2014 10:31 pm : link
do the Pirates have a logjam in the OF? are they looking to move him?

What would it take?

Thor? Thor+? Honestly don't know.

He's not the prototypical power bat for LF, but he's plus everywhere else.

Marte
DanMetroMan : 9/16/2014 10:33 pm : link
isn't being moved. His contract is amazing. He's signed through 2021 and makes 16 million TOTAL through 2018.
Marte
DanMetroMan : 9/16/2014 10:34 pm : link
next 5 seasons combined-26.5 million, incredible deal. Sometimes you nail those. Zobrist, Wade Davis.. sometimes they are clunkers.
I didn't think so
pjcas18 : 9/16/2014 10:35 pm : link
wondered why you mentioned him.

Who is a reasonable LF option? melky?

PJ
DanMetroMan : 9/16/2014 10:36 pm : link
because today I've seen people asking about him and Calhoun. Both (if moved) would cost so much via trade peoples heads would spin. Melky will obviously go to the highest bidder. I personally wouldn't give up the 1st round pick and 4-5 years for Melky Cabrera.
We could sign Melky..
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:37 pm : link
I'd rather sign Cuddyer if we are going that route though.
Just
DanMetroMan : 9/16/2014 10:39 pm : link
don't think he's a guy I give up a high #1 pick and give 4-5 years to, especially a former known roid guy.
Fact's are facts
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:50 pm : link
Flores is a league average SS this year defensively on Fangraphs. From the eyeball test he has room to get even better. With his offensive upside its crazy to sign a Hardy or trade away a top pitching prospect for another guy who "might hit" just the same as Flores. And gag me on a defensive glove like Didi who might not hit at all.
It will be interesting to see what they do with second next year.
Kevin999 : 9/16/2014 10:53 pm : link
Herrera really does not look ready so it would make sense to keep Murphy, but what happens if the Mets are in a wild card spot or close around the trade deadline. I doubt they would trade him at that point, but then he could walk at the end of the year for nothing which is Reyes all over and I can see happening. Unless they start Flores at second until Herrera is ready and we are stuck with another half year or so of Tejada... eeewww.

Thats a win win situation
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 10:55 pm : link
I wouldn't care if Murphy left at the end of the year because he stayed and we went to the playoffs. His replacement will be ready to step in whenever. I wouldn't be too upset we didn't get anything. We are freaking loaded in young talent anyway.

Is this the chance for the Mets to be done with the pitcher unfriendly LV?

no. Already announced 2 year deal with LV.

They'd still get draft compensation.
yeah it really drives me nuts when
ZGiants98 : 9/16/2014 11:23 pm : link
people think we got nothing for Reyes. We got Plawecki who's a top 5 prospect and Wilson.
This doesnt make any sense
Deej : 9/17/2014 7:57 am : link
you give Flores inconsistent ABs and he doesnt hit, but then he gets a critical mass of regular ABs and he hits like he has at every level. That's fucking nuts.
Mets announced Vegas renewal
Shecky : 9/17/2014 8:22 am : link
As soon as it was apparent OK City was out of the picture for them.
with Flores
sshin05 : 9/17/2014 9:25 am : link
at the very least, he'll give you passable defense with power potential. He doesn't walk much but doesn't strike out much either. Being a better homerun threat than Tejada already makes Flores that much more valuable.
I'm OK
Metnut : 9/17/2014 9:34 am : link
with giving Flores a shot at SS this year if we make a major upgrade in the OF. I'd love to sign that Cuban OF and keep guys like Gee/Montero as longmen out of the pen/insurance for when pitchers inevitably get hurt.
Not
DanMetroMan : 9/17/2014 9:36 am : link
gonna pay Dillon Gee 5+ million as a long man. Not realistic.

So what's the alternative?

We give him a rotation spot over a better pitcher? Trade him? I don't mind trading him, even for a small return to clear the $5M, but he really didn't have a good year, would another team really eat that $5M?

He's
DanMetroMan : 9/17/2014 9:46 am : link
either going to be in the rotation, traded or non-tendered. Just can't afford to have 8 million dollar "utility" players (Sherman's idea for Murphy) or 5 million dollar "long men". At this point it's questionable of EYJr is worth the 2+ he will get as a bench player (I'd argue he's not).
