Question about Jernigan observation in Daily News

Dan in the Springs : 9/17/2014 10:01 am
This was the comment in question, with the article linked below.

Quote:
He struggled to win one-on-one battles deep and failed to make defenders miss after the catch, so defenses coolly played in front of him, letting him catch dinks and dunks. He was open because defenses permitted it.

So what I'm wondering is how this is meant to be understood. If a guy can't win battles deep, why would you play a soft coverage underneath? Wouldn't you be able to play aggressive coverage underneath with no fear of being beaten over the top?

Why would defenses "permit" him to make any catches at all?

In my opinion, Jernigan's best attribute is getting open underneath. It is very difficult for teams to man-cover him in the short passing game without him winning those battles. The easiest route to prevent the most damage is to play off and tackle. This might sound the same as what Ebenezer Samuel is saying here, but rather than give Jernigan any credit for being difficult to cover, he makes it sound like covering him is a breeze and the only catches he makes are because the defense is indifferent.

What about you? Do you agree with me that the observation made by Ebenezer Samuel is flawed?

Article is primarily about Beckham's possible return to action - ( New Window )
Can only get open underneath but can't make anyone miss

That's not a receiver that keeps coordinators up at night. Why shift your defense to play aggressively underneath when you can virtually ignore Jernigan there at no cost and save your coverage resources for guys that can actually do damage in the intermediate-deep range?
Let him catch the 8 yard pass but not the

80 yard pass? I agree, strange logic.

I'm clearly not the best defensive mind on this board or even this thread, and what you're suggesting (give up the 8 yd pass vs. 80) makes TONS of sense if you're concerned that the guy is a threat for 80. What I don't get is if you absolutely DON'T think the guy is a threat for 80, why then permit him to even catch the 8?

I mean this seriously. If I'm not worried that my guy can beat me deep I just stay on his hip, right? Why wouldn't I just press-cover the crap out of him right on the LOS? Can you answer that?
Not so sure of the observation

Playing zone or keeping the wideout in front of you is safer, and if he's consistently catching the ball within ten yards of the LOS, it's probably less likely to be a man scheme.
Why would defenses "permit" him to make any catches at all?
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/17/2014 10:47 am : link
Ask Perry Fewell why he does this on 3rd on 10+
I read it as he can beat a DB on a short route...
SB : 9/17/2014 10:47 am : link
...but not deep. So, if he get's past the DB within 10 yards of the LOS, he can then break it for a bigger gain.
Here's his catches
Dan in the Springs : 9/17/2014 10:59 am : link
plus down & distance:

vs. Detroit
2&9 5yds
2&8 9yds first down
1&10 8yds
3&7 3yds

vs. Phoenix
2&9 - 4yds
1&10 - 11 yds first down.

I get down & distance - but twice they gave up first downs on six receptions and only once did permitting a catch result in a fourth down.

Kind of answering my own question here - I'm guessing from looking at the catches he does have, most of them are in typical running situations where the defense would likely be thinking stop the run and keep any catches to minimal gain. So maybe that's why they are permitting him to catch the ball.
Watch SB25

I just watched it again last night. There is nothing better out there now unfortunately.

Giants D was letting all the underneath stuff go, and were pretty consistently able to get the fabled K-gun offense off the field.
They let him catch them because he is not a threat. They focus

coverage on those who are perceived to be threats. Jernigan ain't a threat. Period. Buh-bye. Another waste of a pick.
Again, why cheat up and press
armsteadeatslittlekids : 9/17/2014 12:11 pm : link
when the guy is no threat to break or elude tackles? You can effectively cover him without exposing yourself to losing chunks of yards to someone more dangerous.
In other words...
Dan in the Springs : 9/17/2014 12:34 pm : link
I'm guessing that playing off coverage on Jernigan early downs/longer distances gives the players the ability to cheat against the run - peaking into the backfield instead of playing off the JJ's hip - thus "permitting" the 4 yd catch.
Could have sworn

he was done for the year....
I am sorry...
rocco8112 : 9/17/2014 6:43 pm : link
..he got injured, but it is addition by subtraction the guy just did not look like an NFL player.

Anyone NFL caliber WR will be an upgrade.
That observation just doesn't make sense

The guy who wrote it either doesn't know what he's talking about, doesn't write well, or doesn't care that much. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Jernigan won't even be a Giant next year
SGMen : 9/17/2014 10:46 pm : link
He sucks. Just ended up being another terrible Reese pick. He has no juke ability, makes no one miss. I was very disappointed in him for the first two games thinking he'd show more. Alas, what do I know?
Well if you are in zone
LauderdaleMatty : 9/18/2014 8:12 am : link
Of course you are kind of playing off. That's basically the difference between man and zone.

The reality is Jernigan despite Some being excited by a few games isn't wasn't going to make any coordinators or DBs nervous.
I think
cnuke : 9/18/2014 9:26 am : link
by "he struggled to win one-on-one battles deep," he meant when JJ is going deep and the CB has decent coverage he isn't able to come down with the catch. I think the one-on-one battle he is talking about is catching the ball on a deep route when there is a defender trying to knock the ball away. JJ really doesn't have the size to help him with this part of the game.
