NFT: SCOTLAND thread

NoPeanutz : 9/18/2014 10:29 am
Today is the referendum in Scotland.
Quote:
Voters will answer "Yes" or "No" to the referendum question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Polls have been open since this morning, will close 5pm NYC time. Decision to be announced 1:30-2:30am NYC time (if my math is correct).

News media are prohibited by British law from discussing results until after all voting has closed.

So what do we think, BBI? Who will win?

Any voters posting here today? Any otherwise British BBIers with an opinion one way or another?

Personally, I hope they go for it, economic "consequences" be damned. National borders are about more than efficiency, IMO.

So far the NOs are whipping

the YESs. Looks like the UK will make it.
Maybe thats only 2/32 districts though

Clackmannanshire declares for NO
89% turnout of 35,386 - 54% no, 46% yes
No: 19,036
Yes: 16,350

I think Clackmannanshire was supposed to be a Yes area.
Salmond ' s home turf of Aberdeenshire: 60-40 No

Ouch
Yeah based on the late polls...
Dunedin81 : 9/18/2014 9:23 pm : link
it seems like they're headed to a No vote. Scotland will still get some additional powers devolved to its parliament even if it happens, and this will still be a very significant milestone.
Orkney is very small
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 9:24 pm : link
and was expected to go no. Not even 20,000 voters there, in comparison Glasgow with over 370,000 ballots cast. No looks to lead, but it's not a certainty with very limited official numbers thus far.
sorry, 364,664 in Glasgow
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 9:29 pm : link
was slightly off in the previous post.
England's response to this will also be interesting...
Dunedin81 : 9/18/2014 9:32 pm : link
some English Tories want to punish Scotland for trying this. The sense is that if Scotland gets its own parliament and gets increasing powers English MPs should start to make decisions about England without Scotland's MPs. Whether this gathers any traction or not remains to be seen.
Quebec is the correct comp for this

I went through that in the 90s in Quebec and it wasn't pretty. While deep down I think every region wants to be king of its own castle, we live in such an interconnected world it is virtually impossible to risk a reset/reboot.

FREEEEEEEEEDOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM next time.

Gaelic? Scots is just a dialect of English.
Scottish Gaelic I guess

a bit larger district in, nearly a dead heat there
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 10:36 pm : link
Inverclyde 49.9 Yes, 50.1 No, 27,243 to 27,329 on 87% turnout.
Inverclyde now...
NoPeanutz : 9/18/2014 10:36 pm : link
YES 27k NO 27k... rejected. by fewer than 100 votes.
Renfrewshire

NO 62k YES 55k
large district in
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 10:55 pm : link
Renfrewshire 55k Yes, 62k No.

Dundee votes Yes, first to go that way, 53k Yes, 39k No, the No lead is cut to about 6k with 7 districts in.
Assuming a no...
Dunedin81 : 9/18/2014 10:59 pm : link
it'll be very very interesting to think about where they go from here. Would a further delegation of powers just be a stepping-stone to a successful referendum down the line? Does the UK adopt a more federalized character, with England seeking some devolved powers for itself?
I heard one guy talking about
NoPeanutz : 9/18/2014 11:02 pm : link
how Scotland wants a written constitution. Hmm, must be nice. LOL
I think federalization would be a natural offshoot of this
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 11:04 pm : link
the English bloc will not react quietly to the expanded powers that have been promised for Scotland in the event of a no vote.

Across the country the result is currently Yes 49.1% and No 50.9% with the really big areas still to come.

At the moment it is 178,811 NO, against 172,426 YES
really big still to come is an understatement
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 11:06 pm : link
in Glasgow alone there were more ballots cast than the 7 to come in so far combined.
Glasglow expected to be about 50/50...
Dunedin81 : 9/18/2014 11:07 pm : link
if it breaks for Yes by even a couple percentage points it could make it competitive.
that's what I'm waiting to see
WeatherMan : 9/18/2014 11:09 pm : link
if Glasgow surprises to the Yes it becomes very interesting rest of the night.

West Dunbartonshire with an expected Yes vote, joining Dundee.
West Dun is aYES

That being said, assuming it stays the same, how do you think the "yes" supporters react? Do they just accept the democratic process or do they rebel?
