NFT: Anyone visited Sweden or Denmark?

Jan in DC : 9/18/2014 11:21 am
So I'm considering taking a trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm and was wondering if there were any BBI travelers who had visited or vacationed there with restaurant/museum/travel recommendations.

I posted here before my trip to Iceland and got a number of great tips out of it, so I figured I'd try again.

Thanks!
There's a poster on here who is a Dane

Been to both...never on a holiday though

In Denmark I spent my time in the Jutland which is like the equivalent of Kansas. Cool little towns like Arhus and Silkeborg; though I was in Bjerringbro for several weeks. You will enjoy yourself and the ladies are quite attractive in my opinion.

spent a summer there a few years ago

not sure how long you are going for.

it is expensive city
some amazing restaruants there

if you are there for more than a few days .. rent a bike
the bike lanes are extensive in the city and it is a fun way to travel
there seems to be more bikes on the roads than cars

tourist stuff
little mermaid statue
tivoli (amusement park right in the city)
the zoo

christiania section is worth the trip ... hippies took over a former miltary base and tried to make it into an utopian commune .. now it just has some nice up and coming restaurants
and of course is has a hash/pot market

Been to both and

very much like them both, as I do most of Scandinavia, but neither pass my inexpensive beer test, which is an unscientific way of assigning a rating to a city. The cost in both places is astronomical. That said, Copenhagen is beautiful and I agree with the recomendations above. If you go to Stockholm, the Vasa is a must-see. It's a Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was preserved in the cold waters off the Swedish coast. They raised it and put it in a museum. It is breathtaking to see it in full-size and fully preserved. Of course, I'm a Sailor, so maybe that trips my trigger more than it would for you.
Also--if you have any way to get off

the coast Denmark, near the city of Aarhus, there is a small island called Bornholm. It's not much, but it's pristine. Fresh seafood, great beer and an incredible Viking castle on one part of the coast named "Hammerhus," (The Hammer House...cool Viking name!) It is a stunning sight....as are the Danish women there, who rarely see American men. I happened to get there during U.S. Navy Baltic Operations about a decade ago. I'm sure it hasn't changed since then.
I went to Sweden
pjcas18 : 9/18/2014 12:24 pm : link
on a hockey team representing the US when I was 14.

each kid on our team stayed with a kid on the Swedish team hosting the tournament.

I had a great time, the tournament was from 12/26 - 1/6 or something like that - basically two weeks.

Loved it, but one thing that stuck out was while I was there, we had about 4 hours of sunlight per day, it snowed every day (not a ton but every single day) and the people were not very hygenic.

otherwise I was mostly impressed with a new year's eve celebration we had in a castle and were allowed to drink Heinekens, since there was no drinking age.

I'm sure this is not what you're looking for.
Copenhagen and Stockhom are both really nice

Obviously go see the canal area of Copenhagen (which is where all the pictures come from). Plus they have a lot of outdoor festivals if you go at the right time. The "old town" of Stockholm is really cool, and if you're a fan go to the ABBA museum.
I agree with the people here
Koldegaard : 9/18/2014 12:28 pm : link
And I live in Odense (think Hans Christian Andersen) and you are welcome to email me regarding all the touristy stuff :-) and a side note is that Danish women LOVE American men.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I'll definitely email you if we end up booking it, but I'm 90% sure we'll be going at this point.
I went to both Sweden and Denmark this summer.

Your best bet is to e-mail with Koldegaard, he was very helpful to me. I had a great time, loved both Copenhagen and Stockholm. Spent some time out in the Stockholm archipelago, which was amazing.
Thank you Del

for the kind Words.

Regarding the post about Bornholm (the Island)
Just remember that you really have to be willing to pay big
Money. It is very popular and beautiful, but also very expenssive.
And remember that if you are here for a while, you are only 3-4 hours from Hamburg and 6-7 hours from Berlin by car, so they could be used as day trips.
Been to both

Copenhagen is a great city. I'd add Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek if you're into art museums.

Possible day trips:
Roskilde for the Viking Ship museum
Helsingor for Helsingor Castle
(Didn't do this but wish I did) Frederiksborg Castle

In Sweden I only had time for Stockholm, although I hear Malmo is nice to visit. Could make sense if you're staying in Copenhagen.

Ditto on the Vasa in Stockholm, it's a must. Old Town is fun to hang out at night.

A couple tiems a few years back. I don't remember resteraunts and I was there on business so no fun stuff. But I cann tell you this...I've travelled all over the world and the Swedish people are the nicest people I've ever come across. So friendly and helpful. Most will switch to English immediately if you don't know Swedish. It's very clean and there are lots of great bars and clubs.

We had fun playing the Punch Bug game using redheads instead of the car. I recommend that :)
I visited Copenhagen for a few days

in 2010 and loved it. I was there in late June and was treated to some pretty spectacular weather, something the Danes embrace with enthusiasm by hanging out outside at every opportunity.

It's expensive as hell though, particularly the food.
Yea...
Jan in DC : 9/18/2014 4:33 pm : link
It's probably comparable to the cost of food in Iceland when we visited there. Everything was so expensive, but when you go on vacation, you're going to incur some of that.
My sister and her husband are there right now
The 12th Man : 9/19/2014 11:01 am : link
they have been to Iceland, Norway, Denmark and now Denmark.
I've been to Copenhagen and Amsterdam
baadbill : 9/20/2014 10:00 am : link
and, for me, Amsterdam was the most exciting place I've ever been in my life ... of course this was in 1972 when I was in my 20s traveling all of Europe for 3 months, so probably not very relevant to you (but, oh, I wish I could go back to that summer - other than the Olympic massacre while I was in Innsbruck, Austria (very close to Munich)
I was in Copenhagen - I think it was in 1973
Ira : 9/20/2014 12:34 pm : link
and they had a ferry that went to Sweeden (not Stockholm) that was pleasant.
Ya
Spock : 9/20/2014 6:24 pm : link
That's the closest I've been to Sweden.

Probably from Copenhagen to Malmo. Since 2000 there has been the Oresund Bridge, which is for both rail and cars, and quite incredible (i.e., it's really long). I went over it from Copenhagen to Malmo by rail, changing in Malmo for the Swedish rail train to Stockholm.
We decided to go just to Copenhagen
Jan in DC : 9/24/2014 10:20 am : link
with a stopover in Iceland. Thanks for the recommendations guys (and welcoming more if you have them).

I sent an email to you Koldegaard, not sure if the email from your profile is the right one to use.
