What are the best tackles you remember by a Giants' player?
Two instantly came to mind for me, Gary Reasons tackling Bobby Humphrey and Antonio Pierce in the 2008 NFC Championship game on a screen pass to Brandon Jackson.
Pretty crazy. I wouldn't quite put it on the same level as the last tackle in Super Bowl 25, because of the situation: If Pierce doesn't make his play, the Packers probably lead 14-6 at halftime instead of 10-6. Or maybe Jackson slips on the frozen tundra, and Green Bay settles for a field goal anyway. With the Thurman Thomas play, there isn't much doubt about the impact on who took home the Lombardi Trophy. Pierce busts up the screen - ( New Window )
I remember that play. I was so pumped up when I saw that live. Good player for us during his tenure. Loved his football smarts, always seemed to have us in the right call or would audible and was right when he did.
I might even say Thurman Thomas > Brandon Jackson + Jason Spitz + Daryn Colledge + Scott Wells.
Packer fans see that play a little differently. Instead of "How did Pierce make that tackle?" they ask, "How did three offensive lineman miss that block?"
Of course, Giant fans are so accustomed to botched screens that the OL screw-up on that play looks pretty normal to us.
I was there that day, sitting in the upper deck right above where LT ran it into the end zone. Looking at the hit itself - probably would be called a penalty today. Although since it happened after the throw, it should not have resulted in the INT being negated (I think - maybe I'm wrong about that).
Carl was a tackling machine that day, think he had 11(?). But I'd say any of the tackles on the goal line stand before Denver's missed field goal were my favorites or most memorable to me. LT had one on Elway, dragging him down on the edge... Harry had one on a run up the middle, classic Carson stuff... and Banks had the one on 3rd down if I remember correctly. Those 3 in succession were huge, memorable, and great plays. That sequence and then the missed field goal turned the momentum of that game and then Simms was basically perfect in the 2nd half.
I forget the game but the other team was basically running out the clock and he came up and forced a fumble on the RB right in front of the end zone. The Giants went down the field and scored.
Coming off the Flipper Anderson game, the Giants just went in there and kicked their asses all over the field.
One of my favorite games and it's on my list to review during next offseason. The Giants beat the shit out of Pete Holohan in that game, and I had an irrational hatred of that guy, he used to kill the Giants. That was one of the most cathardic games in the past 30 years.
And as for other great tackles, look at any number of tackles made by Reyna Thompson as a special teams player. He was by far the best cover man the Giants ever had, and they could use a player half as good as he was on this team now.
but Shaun Williams blowing up Jimmy Smith (I think it was Smith, or was it McCardell?) of the Jags in the last regular season game in 2000 set the tone for that game, and that win locked up the #1 seed and set the stage for our run to the SB

good choice Matt. If you rememeber, this was in the days before the field level mics and suspended cameras and you could still here the loud pops from the Giants drilling the Lambs with their shoulder pads and helmets as if you were in the stadium. It was a real preview of what they would do to the Bills in the SB. Pure physical domination and intimidation.
used by the Giants was designed to funnel the run into the middle where Huff was waiting. of course, no human could ever tackle the great Jim Brown by himself.

I went to this game with my dad and my uncle. Awesome game. the Giants really clobbered them IIRC.
Troy Kyles had a breakout game in that win over the Rams...
how important Marshall's hit on Montana was. Rice was wide open for the back-breaking TD if Marshall makes the hit even a half-second later. San Francisco probably wins the game, maybe wins their 3rd Super Bowl.
As it turned out, Montana basically misses the next two seasons - loses his job to Steve Young. That one play basically altered the course of the subsequent 4-5 years in the NFL.
but the hit on a lions qb on thanksgiving against Detroit in '82 was gary Danielson, not eric hipple....one of my favorite tackles was LT chasing Rueben mayes down the line on the backside for a 3 yard loss.
RE: Bingo, but also Eric Howard's knocking the ball...
...out of Roger Craig's hands during the 1990 NFC Championship game. I guess that counts as a tackle.
I came across a link recently where Jim Burt claims that Craig fumbled the ball prior to being hit because he was nervous, and there were talks of giving it to Rathman out of a 2 tight end set since he hadn't fumbled in 300+ carries. That would be followed up on third down by a naked bootleg with Steve Young. But those play calls were veto'd.
The tape has been somewhat inconclusive to my eyes as to what happened on that play because it happened so fast. You see Craig take the handoff and then suddenly LT has it.
Fate was clearly not going to allow the 49ers to win that game, but many of us are still curious about the Craig fumble.
Michael Johnson's (the safety) tackle in the Bears game in 2007? It was an open field tackle with nobody around him. It was 3rd down an it was either a screen play or a swing pass play action and the defense got sucked into it and if not for Johnson's tackle, they might not have won that game. I think he tackled the fake Adrian Peterson. Idk or remember if it was the a drive that held them to a FG or not but I just remember it was a great open field tackle. He redeemed himself though for the previous week when he had Marion Barber wrapped up and just slipped off him.
Just a side note. I met that guy and he was such a fucking dick, lol. Odd
Lots of great tackles already listed - can't argue with any of them. This may not be the "best" but I'll never forget during the 2007 post season Ross knifing in on a wide receiver screen to make the tackle for no gain when he'd already injured his shoulder. He got right up and ran off the field holding the now re-injured shoulder. Incredible commitment to the team to make that play.
I remember that tackle well, because it lead me to believe Johnson would be an excellent late round pick with a good NFL career. It didn't quite play out that way and its too bad, because that play was awesome.
Gotta wonder how good Alford would have been sans knee injury.

Mark Collins was also an excellent tackler (and really good corner who was really overlooked IMO).
LT is known for his rushing the passer and sacks, but he was also outstanding against the run and wrapping up.
Yep, that was something you don't see every day. He just grabbed his jersey and flung him to the ground with one hand.
Probably the best tackler in Giants history.
+1
Am exclamation point on the super bowl win

and all on determination. he was knocked down, chipped, but got up again and ran that cocksucker down. beautiful

I only saw the TV footage of this play just recently. I had no idea that came off a 3 man rush, always looked like a blitz.
Burt said he took a gamble on a spin move on the guard who wound up doubling LT giving him a free shot to Montana.
The hit didn't look quite as bad from the live TV angle than it did on the standard replay of the shot.
I read recently that he felt bad about the hit afterwards and went to visit him in the hospital. Was nice to hear that.
