@ebenezersamuel: Know this about Goodell: He's been huddled with his press ppl, going over scenarios. Expect many well-crafted lines, not much real truth
themselves. And I'm not suggesting he has to provide that, either, but these meaningless corporate PR events aren't worth tuning in to.
Although, I'd love for him to take the podium, say 'I'm the fucking commissioner of the NFL, I can do whatever the fuck I want and nobody can do jack shit about it', then kick the head of the NFLPA in the nuts and walk off stage (basically, a theatrical version of the last CBA negotiation).
His biggest mistake was getting into the punishment business for off field incidents in the first place. Should have just said punishment is the department of the legal system, if you don't like the punishments for these crimes talk to your congressman.

so what happens when one of these guys getting punished before being Â
He actually got some good questions in the CBS interview and didn't answer them well. There's too much attention now. There's blood in the water, people are paying attention. There's no incentive for the Media not ask good questions nor for him to not answer tough ones. There's no more room under the carpet to sweep anything. If he can't regain some measure of credibility, his job may actually be in jeopardy. This could be a defining moment. And no less so if he dodges or otherwise doesn't come off well.
However, none of the unconvicted ones are losing any salary.
Sorta like putting a cop on desk duty while a shooting incident is investigated.
And the other option is to expect that a wife/girlfriend would risk her husband/boyfriend's career and all of the money involved, and assume she might be lying and take the risk that she gets the crap kicked out of her.
More than half of major violence in domestic abuse cases occur AFTER a breakup or report to the police.

RE: so what happens when one of these guys getting punished before being Â
Anything short of "I messed up big time for not acting sooner with respect to Rice's discilpine and more importantly the problem we've had with domestic violence..." will be spin control. The fact of the matter is that there have been numerous domestic violence situations with players, and it wasn't until that violence was shown to the world that the NFL felt the need to act. For years they've paraded the pink throughout the stadiums for breast cancer month, but turned a blind eye to domestic abuse.
So as someone stated, had he not started dealing with the off the field issues, they wouldn't be under the microscope so much.
Ray Rice hasn't been "proven" guilty of anything Â
and his now wife, the victim, has stated that all the attention is unwanted and unhelpful.
Perhaps Goodell will commit seppuku to atone for the ham-fisted way in which the cartel has gone about all this.
He hasn't been "convicted" of anything, but I'm pretty sure the video of him lighting up his GF/wife and his subsequent confession is "proof" of abuse.

Even assuming Goodell lied about the tape, comparing the Rice/AP mistakes to that of Goodell is like comparing MLB to tee ball.
What do you expect him to say? He's going to have to testify at any hearing that comes out of this. He's not going to say anything about that.
I don't think this press conference was a good idea. He got some bad advice, but seeing how the PR at the NFL has been lately I can't say I am surprised.

While I have not been a fan of Roger Gooddell, I don't really understand the universal and societal scorn being directed at him and at the NFL here.
Listening to public criticism of Goodell and and hearing the questions in the presser, it's as if many think Roger Gooddell is responsible for these acts of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Adrian Peterson abused his kid because he chose to act that way. Ray Rice knocked out his fiance because he chose to do so. These incident have nothing to do with the NFL or with Roger Gooddell.
I applaud the NFL for wanting to to rid the league of people who act in this way, but it feels as if many think the NFL owes them.
The NFL didn't create these horrible people who play in their leagues. Their parents, their communities, and they themselves did.
I agree sir. People want him to resign. That's why the media and everyone else is acting all appalled that he's not answering the questions the way they want him to. Nothing short of him saying "I have looked over my performance as commissioner the past few months and I feel I have failed the players, owners, and fans of the NFL. Because of this... I am resigning from my position as Commissioner of the NFL" is going to suffice.
"There are so many questions they are not asking, folks" Â

He's the commissioner for goodness sake, what the hell has been doing all this time? Just sitting on his ass. He needs to throw some more money at NOW because research and administration fees are the only way to end the problem.

no, this is what a $44 million/year empty suit does when he gets caught with hi pants down. Hide behind a blue-ribbon panel.
"Mr. Goodell, even if we somehow get passed the way the full video never made it to your office, how can you possibly say you received 'new information' when there was a publicly available police report starting Rice struck his fiance, causing her to lose consciousness, followed by a video of her being dragged out of an elevator?"
because he kept saying that the info Ray Rice gave him was not consistent with the info they later received is the reason he changed the penalty. I kept waiting for some to ask "are you saying that Ray Rice lied to you?" Everybody else keeps saying the Rice was completely honest with Goodell, so whys he keep saying otherwise? Be a man and come out and say it if you think Rice lied

Someone did ask. He said he couldn't add much to his answer because it's under appeal. And that we'll all hear when the report comes out.
and the league knew it was unaffected $ wise, they knew they didnt have to do much. Goodell halfwayed it and meanwhile the gravy train keeps on rolling...
and good lawyers dont say a lot without saying anything. They try to say something important that will convince the listener of something of have an effect on the listener (even if it is a losing cause, you can still set yourself up for a better result down the road).
Lawyers who get up and deliver no content get nothing accomplished. Picture a judge -- one guy answers the questions, and the other guy evades. Who you gonna side with?
really? Thanks, I must have missed that somehow. I heard him use the "appeal" excuse with every question, but it missed the question about if he was calling him a liar

really? Thanks, I must have missed that somehow. I heard him use the "appeal" excuse with every question, but it missed the question about if he was calling him a liar
He was asked what Rice said that was 'ambiguous' in the wake of his (Goodell's) seeing the second video. You could almost see the relief on his face. I have a good excuse for this one.
. How about this question - regarding the delivery of the tape - is someone in your office being dishonest, or is your office disfunctional and the tape was misplaced?
I love the sanctimonious media being shocked that Goodell hasn't considered resigning. Would you walk away from $40-$42 million a year?
Not to mention the fact none of them cared about DV prior to the Rice video...
Exactly! And it's not just the media but EVERYONE (even every one on this thread and site). NO ONE gave a shit about it when Larry Johnson, James Harrison and Terrell Suggs were charged with DV. Now everyone is sitting here like 'OH MY GOD! HOW YOU COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN FOR SO LONG ROGER?!'. Well... it happened for so long because up until that second Ray Rice video came out... none of you seemed to really give a fuck about it.
Funniest thing is to see the line at M&T Stadium today of Ravens fans trading in their Ray Rice jerseys... while wearing, and trading for, Terrell Suggs jerseys. LOL!
people think they should have a say regarding the position of Commissioner of the NFL. It is a private organization with a very public face. However, it is not a government agency or a publicly held company. The CEO is hired by the owners. If the public doesn't like what is happening, stop watching, stop buying, stop attending. Then and only then will it have an impact.
A lot of the discussion here is silly and meaningless. If you are a fan, you are a fan. Its not your organization to run. The media needs to cover the sport and the news surrounding it, however, who are they to question somebody's employment in a private organization?
The mentality of Americans to "fire" somebody or to have somebody's head on a platter has become a real and sad commentary on the state of our society. Everybody wants to blame somebody. Domestic violence and child abuse deserve our attention, not who knew what or who should be fired.
Sponsors by the score were threatening to abandon the NFL because Â
it's never good to have your product associated with an unsavory product like the NFL. Goodell for the last two days was talking to his legal staff to determine if he had any legal exposure, then talking to sponsors, telling them not to worry, Goodell was going to transform the NFL's image from unsavory into the epitome of rectitude, and lastly Goodell was on the phone with owners saying all will soon be well so please don't fire him and take away his $35 mil per year salary.
you're normally top notch, so I'm surprised by your take on this. Nobody gave a shit about domestic violence? Or was it just accepted? We've been down the road of hitting children. It was considered an acceptable practice in the past. But it's not anymore.
It's called progress. Progress is a good thing. Just because nobody stepped up in the past doesn't mean that they shouldn't step up now. And for a lot of people, I'm sure that DV never really hit home, if they weren't exposed to it, so when they seen the video, it probably shocked them. THIS is what DV looks like? Wow
people aren't calling for Goodells resignation because he "let it go on too long", lol. I haven't heard that one single time. They are calling for him to resign because he has not lived up to the standard that HE, himself has set for the conduct of the league. For Sean Peyton, he didn't want to hear about ignorance. But he's fine with it in his case.
nobody should be discussing their opinions on matters that is "none of their business" on a message board? I guess you've never openly stated that you thought a particular manager for the Red Sox should be fired? Never had anything to say about, say, Bobby Valentine? Because, you know, it's really none of your business, you're just a lousy fan.
Yes. He screwed up. Some people feel he should step down. Some don't. It's strange that you don't think it should be discussed because Goodell doesn't answer to any of us
Although the grainy video did not show what had happened behind the elevator's doors, the images horrified Ravens coach John Harbaugh, according to four sources inside and outside the organization. The Super Bowl-winning coach urged his bosses to release Rice immediately, especially if the team had evidence Rice had thrown a punch. That opinion was shared by George Kokinis, the Baltimore director of player personnel, according to a fifth source outside the organization but familiar with the team's thinking.

Actually a good lawyer does what he just did. Say a lot without saying anything.
All while being billed as the foremost NFL columnist in the country.
Francesa just said Peter King's second question was a softball.

Mike laughing at one of his BS answers was the highlight of the presser for me. Goodell fucking sucks. He sounded like the huge pussy he is who has been totally exposed.
He sounded like a lawyer... which is probably why people hate lawyers lol
A really bad one.

Meh, good lawyers are confident and reflect it in how they speak. Goodell was tripping over his own words often. Had to keep pausing to gather his thoughts and find escape routes. I thought he sounded a lot like a guy who knew he fucked up.
Thanks! I was hoping for an image with Goodell and Baghdad Bob.

pure vanilla company man. Is anyone watching this and feeling better about Goodell or the NFL.
Kudos to TMZ for calling bullshit there. Their reporter wants to know how the NFL couldnt get the tape is TMZ got it with one phone call.
CORRECTAMUNDO! who needs a panel of "experts" to be told that this stuff is wrong and players need to be held accountable? He's just a phony dooshbag.
You bring in experts when you want to decipher what the CORRECT punishment is and how you get to that decision. That's why the panel is being brought in... not to decide if they need punishment at all.
no, this is what a $44 million/year empty suit does when he gets caught with hi pants down. Hide behind a blue-ribbon panel.
Someone did ask. He said he couldn't add much to his answer because it's under appeal. And that we'll all hear when the report comes out.
Lawyers who get up and deliver no content get nothing accomplished. Picture a judge -- one guy answers the questions, and the other guy evades. Who you gonna side with?
Goodell is none of those things.
He was asked what Rice said that was 'ambiguous' in the wake of his (Goodell's) seeing the second video. You could almost see the relief on his face. I have a good excuse for this one.

LOL!

Wow
Yes. He screwed up. Some people feel he should step down. Some don't. It's strange that you don't think it should be discussed because Goodell doesn't answer to any of us
Since the league has an antitrust exemption, the manner in which it is run is very much in the interest of the people and the media.
Whether you like John Harbaugh or not, he had the stones to ask that Rice get released immediately.

Best line about this was about a young black woman gets beat up and a bunch old white ladies benefit from it. I never thought of that aspect of it. Much like other groups I wonder where some of this money goes. Something doesn't seem right about the whole thing.
