Goodell is an empty suit
Deej : 9/19/2014 3:57 pm : link
pure vanilla company man. Is anyone watching this and feeling better about Goodell or the NFL.

Kudos to TMZ for calling bullshit there. Their reporter wants to know how the NFL couldnt get the tape is TMZ got it with one phone call.
Goodell is doing a horrible job here.
vibe4giants : 9/19/2014 3:58 pm : link
He could have turned the fire down. Believe he's turned it up.

I have never been a Goodell hater, seeing him as just the hand/face of the owners. Now I see him . He should go.
You waited that long to ask a stupid question?

They've already hired several women to lead a review of the personal conduct policy and I think head a new department.

Disagree. Look back at the NBA commish's Clippers press conference. Squarely addressed the problem, took decisive and real action, and engaged the media rather than spinning out answers.

Mike laughing at one of his BS answers was the highlight of the presser for me. Goodell fucking sucks. He sounded like the huge pussy he is who has been totally exposed.
He got asked enough of the right questions.
vibe4giants : 9/19/2014 4:08 pm : link
'Sean Peyton." 'Ambiguous.' "Do you have the support of the owners?' 'Why shouldn't you resign?' "Why didn't you see the video?' 'Did you talk to any women about the original decision?' 'Is Muller truly independent?'

He mostly spun and dodged. He looked weak.

I tuned into to see if he'd pull out of the nosedive or increase his speed. I saw the latter.

Big difference is that when Adam Silver spoke he did so initially and wasn't backtracking trying to fix his screw ups. Goodell has screwed this up from the beginning so his point of view going into this was completely different than Silver's.

Again, for what reason should he resign?

A really bad one.

A lot of pausing and sounding very unsure of himself. Company line BS that he had to keep resorting to because he had no real answers for a lot of the questions, which, to me were pretty good. I thought they really put him to the fire with some of those and didn't give him much room to squirm away from (even though he found a non-answer for most of them anyway)

You bring in experts when you want to decipher what the CORRECT punishment is and how you get to that decision. That's why the panel is being brought in... not to decide if they need punishment at all.

Meh, good lawyers are confident and reflect it in how they speak. Goodell was tripping over his own words often. Had to keep pausing to gather his thoughts and find escape routes. I thought he sounded a lot like a guy who knew he fucked up.

no, this is what a $44 million/year empty suit does when he gets caught with hi pants down. Hide behind a blue-ribbon panel.
The question I wanted to hear and never did:
Mike in Long Beach : 9/19/2014 4:25 pm : link
"Mr. Goodell, even if we somehow get passed the way the full video never made it to your office, how can you possibly say you received 'new information' when there was a publicly available police report starting Rice struck his fiance, causing her to lose consciousness, followed by a video of her being dragged out of an elevator?"
I wanted someone to ask
BigBlueShock : 9/19/2014 4:30 pm : link
because he kept saying that the info Ray Rice gave him was not consistent with the info they later received is the reason he changed the penalty. I kept waiting for some to ask "are you saying that Ray Rice lied to you?" Everybody else keeps saying the Rice was completely honest with Goodell, so whys he keep saying otherwise? Be a man and come out and say it if you think Rice lied

Someone did ask. He said he couldn't add much to his answer because it's under appeal. And that we'll all hear when the report comes out.

and good lawyers dont say a lot without saying anything. They try to say something important that will convince the listener of something of have an effect on the listener (even if it is a losing cause, you can still set yourself up for a better result down the road).

Lawyers who get up and deliver no content get nothing accomplished. Picture a judge -- one guy answers the questions, and the other guy evades. Who you gonna side with?

He was asked what Rice said that was 'ambiguous' in the wake of his (Goodell's) seeing the second video. You could almost see the relief on his face. I have a good excuse for this one.
This is what you get for 40 Million a year.

. How about this question - regarding the delivery of the tape - is someone in your office being dishonest, or is your office disfunctional and the tape was misplaced?

Not to mention the fact none of them cared about DV prior to the Rice video...

Exactly! And it's not just the media but EVERYONE (even every one on this thread and site). NO ONE gave a shit about it when Larry Johnson, James Harrison and Terrell Suggs were charged with DV. Now everyone is sitting here like 'OH MY GOD! HOW YOU COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN FOR SO LONG ROGER?!'. Well... it happened for so long because up until that second Ray Rice video came out... none of you seemed to really give a fuck about it.

Funniest thing is to see the line at M&T Stadium today of Ravens fans trading in their Ray Rice jerseys... while wearing, and trading for, Terrell Suggs jerseys. LOL!
What I can't comprehend is the way in which
RDJR : 9/19/2014 5:43 pm : link
people think they should have a say regarding the position of Commissioner of the NFL. It is a private organization with a very public face. However, it is not a government agency or a publicly held company. The CEO is hired by the owners. If the public doesn't like what is happening, stop watching, stop buying, stop attending. Then and only then will it have an impact.

A lot of the discussion here is silly and meaningless. If you are a fan, you are a fan. Its not your organization to run. The media needs to cover the sport and the news surrounding it, however, who are they to question somebody's employment in a private organization?

The mentality of Americans to "fire" somebody or to have somebody's head on a platter has become a real and sad commentary on the state of our society. Everybody wants to blame somebody. Domestic violence and child abuse deserve our attention, not who knew what or who should be fired.
Sponsors by the score were threatening to abandon the NFL because
GeofromNJ : 9/19/2014 6:10 pm : link
it's never good to have your product associated with an unsavory product like the NFL. Goodell for the last two days was talking to his legal staff to determine if he had any legal exposure, then talking to sponsors, telling them not to worry, Goodell was going to transform the NFL's image from unsavory into the epitome of rectitude, and lastly Goodell was on the phone with owners saying all will soon be well so please don't fire him and take away his $35 mil per year salary.
The three experts he brought in
montanagiant : 9/19/2014 6:13 pm : link
Lisa Friel, a former prosecutor who headed the Manhattan district attorney’s sex crimes unit.

Jane Randel, a former Liz Claiborne executive who founded NO MORE, an organization whose goal is to combat domestic violence.

Rita Smith, the Denver-based former head of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
TBone
BigBlueShock : 9/19/2014 6:20 pm : link
you're normally top notch, so I'm surprised by your take on this. Nobody gave a shit about domestic violence? Or was it just accepted? We've been down the road of hitting children. It was considered an acceptable practice in the past. But it's not anymore.

It's called progress. Progress is a good thing. Just because nobody stepped up in the past doesn't mean that they shouldn't step up now. And for a lot of people, I'm sure that DV never really hit home, if they weren't exposed to it, so when they seen the video, it probably shocked them. THIS is what DV looks like? Wow
And
BigBlueShock : 9/19/2014 6:24 pm : link
people aren't calling for Goodells resignation because he "let it go on too long", lol. I haven't heard that one single time. They are calling for him to resign because he has not lived up to the standard that HE, himself has set for the conduct of the league. For Sean Peyton, he didn't want to hear about ignorance. But he's fine with it in his case.
