McAdoo: anything from Beckham this season would be a bonus..

Mike in St. Louis : 9/19/2014 11:41 am
1. Beckham Has Become a 'Bonus'
At this point, the Giants coaches are acting as if rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. doesn't exist. It's nothing against the No. 12 overall pick in the draft. In fact, it seems to be for his benefit.

"Coughlin and McAdoo don't want to put any additional and unnecessary pressure on the first-round pick as he recovers from a hamstring injury that has prohibited him from completing a full practice since June. Given the way the past three months have unfolded, they figure it's best to provide him all the time and space necessary so that, whenever he does return, it's at 100 percent. Beckham has been doing more on the side with trainers at practice, but still hasn't taken a snap in almost a month.

McAdoo even admitted that he doesn't allow himself to dream of the day that Beckham returns. It lets the team (and coaches) live in the present, not the future.

"[Beckham] has a special skill set. He is gifted. He is talented," McAdoo said. "He is smart. He is conscientious. I am excited for the chance for him to come out here. It has to be painful for him right now. I am not going to put myself or him through any of that. When he comes out here, it will be a good bonus for all of us."

this season is going swimmingly!
I get the approach
pjcas18 : 9/19/2014 11:45 am : link
but the phrasing is awful and too far to the extreme.

25% of his Giants career (potentially) flushed down the toilet.

Injuries suck.
Not a surprise, we know he hasn't taken a snap
JonC : 9/19/2014 11:46 am : link
and we know TC won't put him in the game unless he's demonstrated in practice he won't be a detriment.

He's apparently running sprints and agility drills, which suggests he shouldn't be far from returning to practice. The wildcard is hammies are difficult to predict accurately.
hmmm
Jon from PA : 9/19/2014 11:48 am : link
that wasn't my take away from the interview..

{quote]: Do you ever let yourself look forward to the time Beckham is healthy and what he could add to this offense?
A: No.

Q: Why not?
A: He has a special skill set. He is gifted. He is talented. He is smart. He is conscientious. I am excited for the chance for him to come out here. It has to be painful for him right now. I am not going to put myself or him through any of that. When he comes out here, it will be a good bonus for all of us.
[/quote]

I think he was more saying the offense should be better with what they currently have and he doesn't want to put prerssure on OB JR to return because of that. He'll just be another weapon when he does return. I could be way off though.

arcarsenal : 9/19/2014 11:48 am : link
Most of us have been saying this for a while now.

Don't expect to see him and if we do, consider it a bonus.

I do think he will eventually play this year I just don't expect a whole lot out of him. He missed all of camp, all of preseason. It's going to take him a few weeks on top of just being able to play before he can really help and by then, it'll probably be too late.
I think what he is basically saying
Blue Baller : 9/19/2014 11:51 am : link
Hope for the best but plan for the worst
yeah, it would be a bonus
micky : 9/19/2014 11:53 am : link
but, I wouldn't to expect to him being what he was drafted for until 2015 season. A full off season, training camp, and etc. Unless the unimaginable that he re-injures it again.
Managed expectations
jcn56 : 9/19/2014 11:53 am : link
It's the only thing that makes sense given the situation. He's a rookie, he's working his way into an offense that's already struggling, and he's been dealing with a nagging injury. Really can't expect much of anything from him this year.
if it wasn't for the short week
GIANTSr01 : 9/19/2014 11:55 am : link
it sounds like there would be a chance for him to get in on a few sets (5-10 plays) against Washington. But as things stand, I expect to see him get a few snaps in week 5 now and if he produces, his workload will slowly increase (especially if Randle doesn't start producing).
its coach speak
Peter from CT : 9/19/2014 11:56 am : link
nothing more.

The guy is hurt. When he plays, he plays. Coaches can't spend their time pining for hurt players because it doesn't get them anywhere.

He certainly isn't saying anything that he does would be a bonus.
How many times have we seen
Beer Man : 9/19/2014 12:00 pm : link
a blown hammy wreck a players entire season. This has been an issue for Becks since the summer camp

That was more or less my interpretation.
This is beyond frustrating
The_Taxman : 9/19/2014 12:10 pm : link
I understand you can't predict injuries but you have to get some sort of contribution from a pick this high from day one. A top 15 pick has to be a starter at best or a contributing backup, at worst. I know it's a dead horse but the safe pick was Martin or Donald. I'll never understand why we didn't draft either in that spot. You can't fuck around with a pick that high.
When a panel of specialists
deadkurtrulz : 9/19/2014 12:17 pm : link
from the Mayo Clinic finally clears him to play he will still be a smallish 5'11 WR that has never been hit in anger in the NFL.

I hope he will be able to dominate a DB the same way he can dominate the juggs machine.
My expectation as well
Big Blue '56 : 9/19/2014 12:19 pm : link
.
I guess the days
pjcas18 : 9/19/2014 12:27 pm : link
of Parcells calling Terry Glenn "she" for missing time with a hammy are long gone.

Glenn also had a rep
JonC : 9/19/2014 12:32 pm : link
for skipping practice for suspect reasons.
While it's frustrating, to say...
Wonderphil11 : 9/19/2014 12:37 pm : link
the Giants should have drafted Martin or Donald in hindsight is ridiculous IMO....maybe a decent WR would have been available in rd 2, OK...but they got Richburg in that slot then Bromley in the 3rd which don't exactly look like garbage picks at this point.

The Giants need playmakers in a very urgent way...just as they did last year. ODB was a very good pick, the fact he has a bad hammy is irrelevant.
look at it this way:
SHO'NUFF : 9/19/2014 12:47 pm : link
at least next year, we can potentially have a fully healthy OBJ, Beason, JJ, Schwartz, Thurmond and a more developed JPP of TEs...it's like a free agent bonanza! for free!
Whining about shouldda taken Donald or Martin
Montreal Man : 9/19/2014 1:07 pm : link
is total B.S. Did Reese have an effin' crystal ball. You guys are acting like he knew ODB had a bad hammie and still drafted him. Get real and make some sense.

It's the same kind of argument about putting Sehorn in to return kicks. Lots of starters and corners returned kicks, to no detriment, Woodson being one who comes to mind.

Injuries are unpredictable. Live with it.
This is not news on his health
Reale01 : 9/19/2014 1:40 pm : link
It talks about the approach the coach is taking. You can't waste time planning for someone that isn't there. IMO The OP is off base is he is suggesting that this means they expect Beckham to be out for most of the year. Seems to me like he will be ready to contribute in the next couple weeks. Probably as a punt returner to start.
I think this year is the end...
silverfox : 9/19/2014 1:53 pm : link
...of the Reese/Coughlin/Manning era, and Beckham isn't going to change the dynamics of that in my opinion. The Giants are more likely to have the #1 pick, than making the post-season playoffs...Beckham or not.

Actually ANYBODY may be considered a bonus at this point because nobody on offense is stepping up and playing like they are capable.

How many of our draft picks are contributing?
AnishPatel : 9/19/2014 1:59 pm : link
So we have zero return on investment for Beckham thus far. We got zero return on our investment on Wilson and Chad Jones. Beckham one hurts only because the WR pool was so deep in this past years draft. This guy was supposed to add another level to our WR corps. It's not like he sucks, but it's terrible that he can't even get on the field.
That's the way it should be
ImaGiant86 : 9/19/2014 2:16 pm : link
When he's ready he'll contribute but until then we have 46 other guys that are active on game day we need to worry about.

The receivers that have been here all year
Dave M : 9/19/2014 2:33 pm : link
Haven't fully grasped the offense yet. IMO There is no way he is fully healthy and on the same page until late this season if at all. I think the lack of playing on the offense will keep him out longer than the injury. Unless of course, injuries happen. God forbid.
What should McAdoo have said?
SB : 9/19/2014 3:06 pm : link
That the success of his offense is contingent on a 21 year old rookie, and that the offense will most likely suck until he returns?

What would've been so terrible about drafting Martin AND Richburg. Our o-line was brutal last year. Spending our 1st 2 picks on quality versatile offensive linemen actually would've made sense. Yes, we needed a playmaking WR, but championships are won at QB, OL, and DL.

Thank you Taxman!!! Made sense to me on draft day.
I don't think...
Wonderphil11 : 9/19/2014 3:28 pm : link
waiting until the 3rd round for a WR would have been a wise move as the chance of getting a decent one (which they needed) was a lot slimmer. They also addressed the Oline in FA and were able to get Bromley thereby addressing the Dline with that 3rd pick. Could they have gone that way? Sure, but they didn't...my point is that it makes no sense to bitch about it as the draft is so fluid and who knows if Richburg would have even been there for them if Martin was taken.
The Giants don't have seem to have much luck with Beckham's
ghost718 : 9/19/2014 3:32 pm : link
Or Demps for that matter

Gonna have to add another red flag to the scouting process.

Is he a into drugs? Nah
Does he have any off the field issues? Not really
Well than why is he off our draft board? Last name Demps
MsAddo's statement is
TMS : 9/19/2014 5:33 pm : link
being blown out of proportion here IMO. He is simply saying he is not counting on Beckham at all till he is ready to contribute. That could be in a few weeks or later. Lets not make it worse than it is yet.
When he finally gets on the field, the mis-communications

Bonus? A bonus? What do you call all the games he's not been out there? That hammy is writing checks that can't be cashed....with Nicks gone, Mr. McAdoo, are you trying to say your offense was not counting on OBj to be a big contributor? I guess not, after all, he's just a #1 pick....

Considering how heavily great WR play factored into both of the modern Super Bowl wins, you'd think giants fans would appreciate what WRs do a bit more.

Ryan Zimmerman has been out two months now, and he doesn't need the speed and vertical leap that Beckham will. Hamstring injuries are miserable.

I think this is how most of us view the situation by now anyway. The guy hasn't done much of anything besides run on the sidelines. So if he actually manages to get into games, stays healthy in them and somehow produces... then yeah, it's a bonus.
well the good news is the situation does appear to be getting better

hopefully he becomes a good player like Prince and nobody remembers he missed the first 3-8 games of his rookie year.
