TC & playing rookies

dancing blue bear : 9/19/2014 1:41 pm
Just an idea i had when thinking about beckham and the lingering hammy. People feel TC doesn't play rookies. I don't think that is nec. true. We have seen rookies and young players over the years. I do believe he has an inclination towards older players/ experienced players/ those who know what they are doing. particularly on offense. I will say TC will not stand a fumbler, and i could see him having that as a hard and fast rule. but i don't get the sense that he micro manages his coordinators on personnel.

This year we have seen a lot of a. williams, some parker, some washington, a lot of richburg. Donnell, even.

anyway, it could have been that it was gilbride that was more reluctant to use the young guys. for a variety of reasons, complication of the old offense being primary. It could be that MacAdoo is more inclined to play younger guys, as that is the way the NFL is trending, and he is more new school. let them make mistakes and learn.

It could also be that the young guys we have now are better students of the game, or have less talent in front of them, or are simply better then what we had. less mistake prone, we are rebuilding. . . whatever.

I look at williams getting reps as opposed to wilson as a rookie. Wilson did fumble a lot, too. just interested in opinions

obviously it's a combination of things, but thoughts on if the lack of PT could have been more because of gilbride doesn't like to play young guys/ complicated offense and less TC doesn't play rookies.

I don't think the Gmen have much choice in giving the young guys playing time.

A williams - No one else behind Jennings
Richburg - Was second team until Schwartz went down
Donnell - All young players (except fells)
Parker and Washington - Injuries to Beckham and not much behind Cruz and Randle. Now Jernigan is injured.
Coughlin's rules for Offensive rookies
Bold Ruler : Mod : 9/19/2014 1:48 pm : link
Are you a RB? Will you hold onto the ball? Will you block well in pass protection? Yes? You play.

Are you a WR? Will you run the right route? Can you catch? Yes? You play.

Are you a TE? Can you pass block? Can you run the right route? Can you catch? Yes? You play.

Are you an O-lineman? Are you the best guy at the spot? You play.
It's not he won't play rookies
mrvax : 9/19/2014 1:54 pm : link
but we see other teams doing it more often. The other thing is that TC tended to play beat up old veterans he knew well over replacement players. The Diehl over Locklear comes to mind.
I think it's harder for rookies to prove themselves to Coughlin
USAF NYG Fan : 9/19/2014 1:58 pm : link
but saying he outright doesn't play them is wrong. Both Bradshaw and Steve Smith contributed big plays in our 2007 run.

Some say he doesn't start rookies. Nicks was a started later on in the season his rookie year. I think Beckham will start IF his hamstring issue clears up. Pugh and Richburg should also dispell that belief.
Parker is not a rookie

Coughlin's Rules...

...are no longer credible. Punishing players may have worked when players actually cared...with the money they make now, they don't need to oven be on the field (or even play for the team paying them in the case of dead money)
Yet another bullshit thread about this topic. TC PLAYS ROOKIES

No, you likely just perceive that other teams play their rookies more. If it wasn't for ODB's hammy, it's likely that the Giants top 4 picks would all be getting significant snaps this year.

TC tends to have more tolerance for physical breakdowns (Diehl, Snee) than mental breakdowns (fumbling ala Wilson, Moore, etc).

You forgot the final question. Do the Giants have rookies that meet the above criteria? No in recent seasons. Fire Reese!! (not really).
For rookies, it depends on where they were drafted, etc.
BLUATHRT : 9/19/2014 2:45 pm : link
Some rookies, even if they can contribute in their position, they are sometimes not called upon because of lack of contribution on specials.
I wonder who these talented rookies who don't get

Giants rookies who saw extensive playing time under Coughlin
FJ : 9/19/2014 3:30 pm : link
Eli Manning
Chris Snee
Gibril Wilson
Justin Tuck
Brandon Jacobs
Mathias Kiwanuka
Barry Cofield
Aaron Ross
Steve Smith
Michael Johnson
Ahmad Bradshaw
Kenny Phillips
Hakeem Nicks
Jason Pierre-Paul
Matt Dodge
Prince Amukamara
Jacquian Williams
Henry Hynoski
Will Hill
Justin Pugh
Weston Richburg
Andre Williams

The list of 2nd year players who saw extensive playing time is even longer.
This is all BS

that TC does not play rookies. They play if they give us the best chance to win. This talk started when all the lousy draft choices Reese made were not good enough to see the field, and his supporters used it as an excuse.
Sum it up
blueblood'11 : 9/20/2014 8:11 am : link
Back in 2007 when the Giants upset the Pats in the Super Bowl three of the biggest contributors in that game were rookies. Bradshaw with his no holds barred running style, Steve Smith with veteran awareness, and Kevin Boss who set the tone in the the beginning of the fourth quarter with his catch and run that got the offense going setting up their first touchdown which put the Goants ahead at the time.

If the these guys can play and make plays and avoid making the type of mistakes rookies typically make Coughlin will play them.

You shouldn't use 2007 as an example, actually it hurts the argument. SS missed the majority of the season. The other players you mentioned got playing time due to injuries (Ward and Shockey). During the regular season Bradshaw only got 23 carries with the majority of his carries coming in the last few games of the year. Boss was only targeted after Shockey injury, therefore in the regular season. He finished with 14 balls thrown to him for the 2007 regular season.

Ross was the rookie who got significant playing time in 2007. The other rookies were 3rd or 4th string. Boss was behind Shockey and Matthews. Bradshaw was actually behind Jacobs, Droughns and Ward.
