Eric Herman waived

Giants-Bama in CO : 9/19/2014 5:04 pm
Today at 4 PM EST was when Giants needed to make decision on Herman. Well he is waived. Will see if he goes to PSQ
Giants Transactions - ( New Window )
So is this the Eric Herman Appreciation Thread?

move, he outplayed Jerry and some of the others in the preseason games.

Agreed.

Bad move. My guess is that they'll put him on the PS, but he may not get there. Keeping him over Brown is a mistake. Nobody is saying he's ready to start, but he's at least shown something as a run blocker. It's a bottom of the roster decision, but it just feels like another FO mistake with the OL.
If they actually want to keep him...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2014 5:18 pm : link
...it's a calculated risk, and probably a pretty good one. Nobody signed him off the practice squad last year, and it's not likely anyone will now if they put him on the practice squad again.

Or he may simply wind up on his couch in Ohio.
Acid - we don't have a bottom of the roster
Jimmy Googs : 9/19/2014 5:20 pm : link
its bottomless based on the talent we put on the field...
Reese Should Not Have to Make This Decision
Aloha Alan : 9/19/2014 5:24 pm : link
It is the coaches that do. Obviously Turnstile Jerry and Blow Past Brown are superior in the coaches minds.

Herman

was absolutely dominant in college, especially in run blocking. He also pulled well. But he came from a lower level school (Ohio). Players like that often need a little time to develop. He may never get any better in the NFL. But he did show some improvement in the preseason.

Guys like Brown and Brewer have reached their peak IMO. And you'd only need to cut one anyway. As I said, it's a decision involving the last OL, and he'll probably get through to the PS, but I would have waived Brown. What's the likelihood that anyone would pick up Brown anyway? Everybody saw how bad he was last season, and in the preseason this year.
I'd waive Brown

but that is the BBI way. With the status of the Giants OL, if they thought he could offer anything they would have kept him

And that's the problem. The majority of Reese's selections have done nothing.
Keep in mind that if he spends most of 2014 on the practice squad...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2014 5:54 pm : link
...it won't count as his first year of service. That works out a lot better for his eventual team (if any) than if he earned a credited season as the inactive tenth lineman.
I agree that Herman has shown some progress, and some versatility.
Red Dog : 9/19/2014 7:11 pm : link
I'd keep him over Brown any time. Herman might become an NFL player. Brown isn't.
I think I'd keep this young player
mrvax : 9/19/2014 7:28 pm : link
over Brown also unless the coaches are sure the guy is and won't be NFL ready.
Apples and oranges.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2014 7:32 pm : link
Brown is a one-year, vet-min rental. Herman is a project. It's like comparing a cheap term insurance policy to a growth stock. Each has its place in a responsibly diversified portfolio.

Brown may completely suck, but that's a different issue. The Giants are going to carry a veteran swing tackle. Even if that guy isn't Charles Brown, it can't be Eric Herman. How would you feel about James Brewer?
There goes the Division title.
Phil in Joisey : 9/19/2014 7:36 pm : link
The Giants have so much dead wood on the offensive line it doesn't matter who they waive.

Meant to say keeping Brown over him is a mistake.
Herman Gone
Percy : 9/19/2014 7:55 pm : link
Disappointment. He must have showed no promise laterally. I had hoped he'd develop into a force.
Instead of Herman vs. Brown...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2014 8:02 pm : link
...we should probably be debating Herman vs. Asper or Becton. At this point, those guys are his competition. I suspect Asper is toast. He'll be 29 in a month and a half. If he still can't make the bottom of an NFL roster, it's hard to see how he's anything but practice-field fodder.

exactly
Herman spent a year on th PS

That's about as much production as you can reasonably expect from a 7th round draft choice, I think.
If this guy couldn't find his way to the field....

Still unsure if he's got enough AA for the NFL, but he played with some snarl and power in the preseason, footwork and technique looked improved. I'd keep him over Reynolds, perhaps he'll hit the PS for another year of seasoning.

Right, cuz players never develop over time.

Wasn't he like a seventh round pick or something? I doubt they expected him to crack the starting lineup right away, if ever.
Crack the starting lineup?

Last Year Any Guy Off The Street Had The Opportunity To Show Something. He Didnt. Period.
We might not know the deal with Herman for a couple more days.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/20/2014 1:33 pm : link
Assuming he clears waivers this afternoon, there's no particular urgency about adding him to the practice squad. He wouldn't actually practice until Monday, when the team starts preparing for Thursday's game.

Maybe one of the beat reporters will notice whether he cleared out his locker (hint, hint).
I guess he cleared waivers.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/21/2014 4:48 am : link
Shocking stuff: Nobody claimed the twelfth-best (or thereabouts) offensive lineman on a team with a terrible offensive line.

If Flaherty thinks Herman has any potential at all, he'll be back on the practice squad by Week 5.
He will be collecting pancakes

Eric Herman has cleared waivers and replaced Mark Asper on the practice squad. I guess they still see some potential in Herman. If they just wanted a body for scout team reps, Asper would fill that role.

Ruthless bastard that I am, I kind of like the way the Giants are handling guys like Herman, Bennett Jackson and Michael Cox: It doesn't matter that the team spent a draft pick on you; if you can't contribute this year, and you figure to clear waivers, you aren't going to earn a year of service wearing street clothes on game day.
