came across an Alt Country band from Raleigh named American Aquarium. They're currently opening up for Justin Townes Earle, and Jason Isbell produced their last album. They're great in concert, and I like their most recent album as well. Here's a live version of their song Jacksonville. Link - ( New Window )
A metal supergroup with Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan), Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly, Nailbomb, Cavelara Conspirasy), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), and Dave Elitch (The Mars Volta)
There were more posters on the Jerry Garcia guitar thread that have never appreciated Frank Zappa than I was actually aware of. I assumed Garcia fans were experienced and at least would have appreciated greatness even if it went misunderstood. I'm a seasoned veteran and I still haven't caught up completely on Van Morrison and The Velvet Underground. Why look for lesser alternatives when there is so much greater music out there that people haven't experienced yet?
Anybody looking for something good to listen to? "Thick as a Brick" in it's entirety? Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac? Emerson, Lake and Palmer's " Pictures at an Exhibition"? Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks? Grand Funk Railroad's " Caught in the Act" ? Roger Waters "Amused to Death"? Brian Wilson's "Smile"? Supertramp's " Crime of the Century"?
Why look for new music that may or may not be worthwhile when there are so many treasures established not listened to or appreciated?
Marvin Gaye, Carole King, Steve Forbert, Traffic, Susan Tedeschi, Henry Paul, The Clash, Neil Young, Yes, Albert King, Robert Cray, Steve Goodman.
It runs deep, you'll never hear it all.
I'm friends with the girl Taryn in Alternate Routes, she's from the Watchung area originally. Great voice and I've had the pleasure of many late nights where her and her sister would sing for hours at gatherings. Alternate Routes are definitely a good band though.
easily one of the top 10 rock bands around these days and sadly not well known. but more in the vein of this thread...this kid ain't easy to look at at but his last CD is damn good Alt Country...Austin Lucas Austin Lucas: Alone in Memphis - ( New Window )
I could easily post dozens, but I'll limit it to 1 band per the OP: Crack the Sky, which is IMO the best band nobody but 2 people I've ever met has even heard of aside from the few friends in college who turned me onto them. They're a prog rock band from Ohio in the mid-70s & still play a few shows a year in Maryland.
Umphrey's McGee is great, although they've gotten too heavy metalish for my liking lately. Seen them 14 times. Blitzen Trapper is kinda meh IMO.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of the new Orwell's album, Disgraceland. Pretty young and talented. They are playing Asbury Lanes in October. Orwells - ( New Window )
I think I know a little about your taste (Echolyn) so I know you will love both progstreaming (grandslam) and Amplifier.
Cool feature of progstreaming, a pop out player listng the songs with the options to skip forward etc.
Don't miss "Cat's Cradle" on Amplifier's new one Mystoria and "Planet of Insects" on Octopus. (linked on YT above, check "see more" for song titles and selection.)
"Why look for new music that may or may not be worthwhile when there are so many treasures established not listened to or appreciated?"
Why miss out on new music because you're too busy living in the past? why would anyone want to lock themselves in a time vault and not explore new horizons? (hey leif ericcson/Columbus/Marco Polo, don't bother going in that direction, Frommer's says Italy is the place to be)
There's really no reason you can't do both. besides, just because you find them delightful doesn't mean everyone will. So what you find to be a can't miss/don't waste your time looking elsewhere, I might (and actually do on most of your list) yawn and say 'nice, but I'd rather be checking out the newer (or different) stuff'.
Thanks, I was just recently introduced to them on a trip to Norway. They sound like a couple Icelandic bands I love so naturally I was surprised to find out they are from Chicago. Can't stop listening to them.
The Winery Dogs, hard rockin' old guys featuring Billy Sheehan on Bass and the drummer from Dream Theater. I highly recommend The London Souls, a kick-ass power trio. Hendrix meets The Beatles, amazing.
