Thrilled for Eli...great game...but he got damn lucky on one

Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/21/2014 9:06 pm
play last in the game.

Houston has cut the score from 17-0 to 17-10. Giants respond with nice drive. Get inside red zone. He tries to hit Rueben Randle on a short curl on third down...two Houston defenders jump play...one was think INT and TD going the other way...and Houston lineman deflects ball away. (this is the play where the ball hung in the air).

Thank God the ball was deflected because that had pick 6 and 17-17 all over it.

Eli still has too much gunslinger in him
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/22/2014 8:41 am : link
I don't mind a QB putting it up there for a receiver to make a play, but Randle hasn't really ever shown the ability to beat double teams on jump balls like that. You throw balls like that when you have supreme confidence in your guy. Not sure why he tried to force it there.
Yeah he had 7 incompletions
Headhunter : 9/22/2014 8:41 am : link
that is 7 threads right there than can be put under the microscope and be over analyzed

Its amazing after completing 75% of his passes, 7 incompletions (with two drops), we have thread after thread with lucky bounces, gun slinging, risk taker....

I have never seen an athlete as scrutinized by his fan base more than Eli.
I agree with Dep, this is rediculous
PatersonPlank : 9/22/2014 9:05 am : link
Every QB in the league has tipped passes and incompletions. No one on this site ever sits here and complains about Peytons misses. He throws a tipped pass and its no big deal.

The guy missed 7 passes, completed 75% of his throws, and threw 2 TDs, yet people bitch.
We aren't Broncos fans, so why should we care about Peyton?

.
Also, isn't it the OL's job to keep the DL players hands down?
PatersonPlank : 9/22/2014 9:09 am : link
I think that was the exact right throw. The Giants were completing that pass all day and Randle had sat right there in the opening like he should. If not tipped it was a completion. Watt made a great play. Eli can't sit there and not throw a ball because some DL guy might put up his hands, how does he know who or when they will?
Eli has looked very good the past 2 weeks

And if this is what we can expect from the O Line going forward, we may have something very positive to build on.

I was shocked to hear the state the Giants had the longest streak in the NFL until yesterday of scoring less than 28 points per game.

It is one game (plus some positive signs last week)... but it would be nice if this was the norm from this team and not merely the occasional exception.
Eric over the past 18 games

Eli's passes that got deflected have found the ground less frequently than any other quarterback in the league.

Don't you think he is due for a few lucky bounces.
very very pleased
sshin05 : 9/22/2014 9:50 am : link
with Eli yesterday. Looked like the Eli of old. He did get that one potential INT fall to the ground, but its about some time he got some luck go his way.
if your talking about the 3rd n short play in the red zone
NYG007 : 9/22/2014 9:50 am : link
Eli wasnt throwing to the double covered Randle (replay angle showed it look like he was) He was throwing to a Wide OPEN Donnell behind Randle, who was cutting into the end zone.

The lineman batted the ball because Eli got over excited for the free score and gunned the ball low, instead of simply lofting a free touch pass for 6

1 Trillion % agree. I watch 6-7 full games a week, tip passes on Eli literally are picked off at 3x the rate on average of any other deflected qb in the game, its crazy!
Guys,

Eric's point is that it's crazy how one play, one bounce, one decision can impact the game in such a big way. Eric saying Eli got lucky on the play isn't saying that he wasn't due for some luck. It was just commentary on the nature of football, not Eli Manning.

But cant you say the Texans were lucky that fumble bounced right into the arms of one of their defenders inside the 5? Lets face it, we dont know what would have happened on the pass because it never made it a yard past the LOS. To say it was getting picked off is just a guess.
i've been on Eli a little bit lately
djm : 9/22/2014 10:40 am : link
but I have always been perfectly fine with the Eli that makes mistakes while lighting up NFL defenses. We can more than live with aggressive but productive Eli. It's the aggressive but non productive Eli that can be a killer at times.

As long as Eli is putting up the points, the risks and mistakes are more than forgivable--i'd even say it's encouraged...

I should have seen the signs that Eli was turning the corner last week against the Cards but it was hard to not get mad with the results. I am starting to feel really good about Eli again. His passing looks tremendous.

dep, I have no issue with any of that. In fact, I do agree it's a bit presumptuous of Eric to assume the ball would've been picked and I think there have been/will be much better opportunities than that play to articulate that sentiment.

But the way people jumped on him here really showed that they missed the point, even if it wasn't the best opportunity to present it.
And also,
Mike in Long Beach : 9/22/2014 5:52 pm : link
I disagree with you on the fumble because fumbles are inherently lucky for whomever gets the bounce... it has to go somewhere, so I don't think the Texans were beneficiaries in this case.
