NFT: Top FIFA official-Qatar will not host World Cup

DanMetroMan : 9/22/2014 11:49 am
(Reuters) - The 2022 World Cup will not be held in Qatar because of the scorching temperatures in the Middle East country, FIFA Executive Committee member Theo Zwanziger said on Monday.

"I personally think that in the end the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar," the German told Sport Bild on Monday.

"Medics say that they cannot accept responsibility with a World Cup taking place under these conditions," the former German football (DFB) chief, who is now a member of the world soccer's governing body FIFA that awarded the tournament to Qatar in 2010.

It's not a place you want to be running around for 90+ minutes, that's for sure.

Unless they're going to play the games at midnight in December. And even then, it's still pretty warm, but at least bearable.
Should be really..

interesting to see how money is secretly given back if this ends up being true.

This is FIFA, more likely this leak is just to get a few more million in bribes before "confirming" that the games will still be held there.

If it was the next world cup
Semipro Lineman : 9/22/2014 12:19 pm : link
then I would believe this but since it's two cups away with a shit ton of money already spent on infrastructure, I don't believe it. (In addition to the bribes already spend as FMIC mentioned.)

Watch, between now and the games you will see huge amounts of money spent to create a cooler playing surface or some innovation that supposedly will make the game safer and stuff. Plus they'll probably relax the substitution rules for the games as well

Wouldn't moving it to the winter wreck havoc with the European league schedules?

FatMan in Charlotte : 9/22/2014 12:30 pm : link
is that FIFA does pull the World Cup (I've heard this rumored for some time), but funnels a shitload of money (i.e. bribes) back into the infrastructure to elevate Qatar's football image. Hell, it would have been embarrassing enough to have a host nation who would be like the 1098th ranked football team in the world.....

Wouldn't be surprised. I wonder if the U.S. will get it if Qatar is out. I thought Australia was in the running as well. Coming here would be easy for FIFA. The infrastructure (NFL and big time college stadiums) is already built. Nobody is going to die.
While I would love the U.S. to get it
RB^2 : 9/22/2014 2:32 pm : link
I think it should go to Australia. They've never had it and would probably be very good hosts. Maybe they could do a combined bid with New Zealand.

It would. The possibility of a winter World Cup has been mentioned publicly before, and it would involve an extended winter break for the leagues. Most people understandibly view that as a disaster.

Hopefully FIFA comes to its senses and just moves it to a country with the infrastructure already in place. We've had two World Cups in a row now in countries that basically screwed over many poor people to host the tournament. How about we put one in a country that won't do that?

Yeah Real is something else. They obliterated the team I support this weekend 8-2. 8-2!

FFP is a joke.
I'm not bothered by FFP
Go Terps : 9/22/2014 3:47 pm : link
Personally I don't want to see any type of salary cap system at all. If Depor doesn't want to lose 8-2 then they should get their own house in order. They alone are to blame for their lack of money...I don't want to see Real or Barca chopped down so that Depor can compete. I want to see Depor climb the mountain. It's a long and slow climb, but I'll take that over dismantling great teams.
I understand not wanting a salary cap
RB^2 : 9/22/2014 4:02 pm : link
but what about revenue sharing? Or having the national government NOT backstop Real Madrid at the expense of the rest of the league? La Liga truly is a joke from a structural standpoint. "Climbing the mountain" the old fashioned way like NFL teams can is unrealistic.

Oh I agree with that, I do not support a cap and don't want to see clubs chopped down. In my opinion, it hurts small clubs more than larger clubs and reduces a lot of competitiveness throughout the leagues. It prevents a lot of owners of small clubs who have much larger ambitions. Owners of smaller clubs should be allowed to spend, but the debt does not go to the club. If a owner splits town, the debt is on him, not the club. Kind of sticky situation, what happens if the opposite happens and the club makes massive profits? Maybe the owner can keep profits, but the TV and sponsorship goes to the club.

funny it is not
the corruption in the winning bid
or the slave labor being used to build the infrastructure

but suddenly FIFA realized that Qatar is hot in the summer

sounds like FIFA is looking for a way out of Qatar.

I think FIFA will give it to the US for a few reasons.
1. it cost brazil 11 billion dollars this past world cup
i believe the 1994 world cup in US cost 28 million.
and 1994 world cup still has record for largest attendance.

2.FIFA was surprised by the US fans this time around and want to capitalize on soccers momentum in US

3. if US gets 2022 bid it is less likely US and Europe would sit out Russia world cup in 2018

not to mention that the US
B in ALB : 9/22/2014 5:05 pm : link
Is really easy to travel to from abroad. Getting to Qatar? It's doable of course but definitely not built for the influx of millions and millions of people all at the same time.

FIFA is looking at taking in a hell of a lot more money in the US based solely on attendance.

Who the fuck wants to go to Qatar and sit in a stadium while it's 120 degrees outside?

And who the fuck wants to go to Qatar period?
Not to politicize this
Headhunter : 9/22/2014 5:08 pm : link
just stating a strong opinion that Qatar will be in play as will Turkey down the road on the long fight ahead with ISIS. They play both sides of the fence and will have to decide whether they are for or against ISIS. Both countries
Australia could handle a World Cup too
dpinzow : 9/22/2014 6:09 pm : link
they have most of the facilities (MCG, SCG, a few other Aussie Rules stadiums). However aside from the MCG their stadiums are smaller, and it's also far more expensive for foreigners to travel there on a plane than it is to go to the US

Real Madrid probably raises hundreds of millions by selling merchandise around the world...I don't feel like Depor is entitled to any of that money. I would agree that the TV money should be split evenly, which it currently isn't. Other than that though...every club for itself. Sink or swim, IMO.

Real benefited from government largess like few other sports organizations ever have. And that's without their affiliation with Franco. The system is a joke.
They should drop the pretense and stop calling it La Liga and give it a more accurate name. Perhaps La "loose association of independent football fiefdoms with no common purpose".
Agreed on Real, but
Go Terps : 9/23/2014 9:18 am : link
though you're ignoring my point that Depor has no claim to their revenue. Further, you can't use the government excuse for Barca, or Atletico last season (really the best team in Europe last year), or the success in the Europa League.

La Liga has some flaws, but it's still the best league in the world; something that's been borne out pretty clearly the last ten years or so.
