Justin Pugh - Controlled JJ Watt

armstead98 : 9/22/2014 12:38 pm
Good breakdown from Conor Orr about the Giants gameplan to handle Watt. They ran right at him, seeming to take advantage of his aggressiveness.

He had the breakdown and Pugh was on Watt almost 50% of the time. Pugh is rapidly becoming a dominant RT which is great to see. If Beatty can play as well as he did yesterday, the Oline is going to be in good shape.

LOL. This pic is really funny

That picture doesn't speak well for the rest of the Houston DL.
He's not rapidly becoming a dominant RT

He had a good game
I thought Pugh
pjcas18 : 9/22/2014 12:44 pm : link
played well but when you look at it the other way and say Watt had a sack, two TFL on run plays, a batted pass and many other tackles I'd say that's a good day.

If JPP did that we'd be thrilled. Wouldn't we?

So yeah, Watt didn't take over the game, but he wasn't invisible either.
Pugh
dontboobigblue : 9/22/2014 12:45 pm : link
whiffed on a few blocks.

He didn't let Watt run wild but he far from dominated.

Fans are getting to excited about beating a shitty Texans team. It's a fucking shame we lost to the cardinals.

At least one TFL came against Beatty. And while batted passes are good from your DL, they often mean the OL did it's job as well.
Great Job

to Pugh Walton and Richburg. Jerry and Beatty were good. Anytime your RB has a healthy 34 carries your OL played well. Good to see him shut down the best in the game at DE IMO
Cardinals are 3-0
BillyBoy8384 : 9/22/2014 12:51 pm : link
They are a good team. I feel your frustration bc we had the game won. A dropped pass. Punt return TD to lose another game in that style just hurts...FIRE QUINN...is that going to be the first of our usual 3 punt returns we allow a year under Quinn
if the giants
sshin05 : 9/22/2014 12:53 pm : link
can minimize turning the ball over, they'll be fine.
We still had the upper hand after that punt return.
kmed : 9/22/2014 12:54 pm : link
THEN we fumbled the ensuing kickoff. We were STILL in the game after that. THEN Jennings fumbled as we were driving in an attempt to tie it up. That was a devastating loss because of that series of events.

All I'm saying is controlled might be a stronger word than reality, I think maybe limited the damage from Watt or held his own against Watt. Had a good day against Watt is even something I'd support.
best game i ever saw pugh play

he played angry.

that was his rep coming out of college

Fair enough. And I'll take our 2nd year RT "holding his own" against the best defensive player in the game.

Same here.
Pugh

was excellent. Everybody on the OL played very well. Whether this continues is unknown, but it was certainly welcome.
Pugh has experienced a bit of a sophomore slump
oipolloi : 9/22/2014 2:21 pm : link
But he is still holding his own.

He is more of a finesse player. His biggest strength is at the second level and Mac has started to exploit that with all the swing passes to the TE. I expect to see a lot more plays where Pugh gets downfield and throws some great blocks. He would have been the perfect RT for Tiki
hold his own? Watt had a good game?
fishmike : 9/22/2014 3:13 pm : link
Watt's stats were OK yea... I didnt even know what they were until someone posted them. I remember the sack, and it was a clever play, a crafty play to bring down Eli.

That being said Watt had zero, zilch impact on the game. We destroyed them on the ground, usually running right at him or right up the gut. Eli was never pressured in the game either. He was able to establish a rythm and pick apart.

UNLIKE

JPP who didnt have a sack but was a beast and had a huge impact on the game. Do folks not simply use their eyes?

Texans may not be good but their defense has a ton of talent and the Giants OL took it too them in every sense of the word.

Yup ^
Pugh was phenomenal
dpinzow : 9/22/2014 3:25 pm : link
After JJ Watt beat him for the first sack he could have gotten wrecked. Instead he took it to the best defensive lineman in football
I'm not sure what some of you were watching
Modus Operandi : 9/22/2014 3:25 pm : link
Watt tossed him around with that swim move repeatedly. And more often than not, they ran away from Watt.

That's not to say Pugh isn't a good player. He played considerably well....but he didn't control shit.
Watt
stretch234 : 9/22/2014 3:52 pm : link
If you watched the game, JPP had a tremendous game, through the whole game. Watt made a play the first series and after that largely did nothing.

Since most people look at a stat sheet they see Watt with a sack and JPP with none.

Another instance showing that sacks are over rated rather than consistent pressure.

Eli had pocket comfort and Fitzpatrick had very little
I never said
pjcas18 : 9/22/2014 4:15 pm : link
JPP played badly - the opposite I think he played great, my point was if he played like Watt did most of us would be pleased with the game (not saying one played well and the other didn't - the Giants whole DL was better than the Texans).

And just look up to the second post when you say Pugh controlled Watt. LOL, the Giants gave him the triple team on that play, and probably more.

I said Pugh played well, he held his own against one of the best, if not the best, defensive players in the game, but I stopped short of the hyperbole.
Cant go so far as to say he controlled him, but he held his own
j_rud : 9/22/2014 4:28 pm : link
With a guy like Watt that's what you hope for. You're not gonna control him, but don't let him take over either. And early on it looked like it might happen. Watt whipped his ass on a few plays, caught him lunging really badly on the sack. But he did settle down and prevented game changing plays. But Watt had something like 7 tackles and a sack. That's not control. I'm not trying to take anything away from Pugh though, it was a nice performance and another step forward.
They showed Watt
bradshaw44 : 9/22/2014 4:28 pm : link
on the sideline a few times and he looked very frustrated. It put a smile on my face when I saw it.

He was seeing more triple teams than a Vivid contract girl
Control probably wasn't the right word
armstead98 : 9/22/2014 5:20 pm : link
I meant to say that he contained him or at least prevented him from having a huge game.

I'm somewhat optimistic about the offense. As long as they're healthy they should only get better as they get more experience.

I hate it when I have to agree with Modus.
we clearly had a game plan against Watt
mfsd : 9/22/2014 5:29 pm : link
and executed it well. It's great to see and hear some attitude from our whole OL group

I also wouldn't call Pugh dominant at this point, but we clearly have a dependable starter there who's still getting better

Pugh played the NFL's most dominant DE fairly well. I give him an B+ considering the level of competition. But dominant he was not.

Yeah in reality on planet earth they actually ran right at Watt constantly when he played that 3-technique spot outside shade of Richburg. This eliminated Watt chasing the play down from behind. They combo ’d him with Walton and Beatty either side of the guard and absolutely eliminated Watt from stuffing the run. Pretty simple gameplan really. But carry on I guess.

Did any one notice...
D HOS : 9/22/2014 11:31 pm : link
That at least once, Pugh was on the left side, up on the line next to Beatty? I didn't notice who was our "right tackle" in that formation. Also I didn't notice if that was because Watt moved to RDE for that play. What was that all about?
