Do we keep Richburg at G future wise?

BillyBoy8384 : 9/22/2014 12:44 pm
Everything ran off of his hip at the G spot gained nice yards. Is he going to be a G for the rest of his career bc he sure looks good at it.
How old is Walton bc he also played good. Do the Giants plan on moving Richburg over to C next year? Pugh also played lights out too.
Or did they just bring in Walton to mentor the rook...I see potential for Richburg at the Guard spot. Reminded me a bit of Seubert

anyone who doesn't wish to talk football and the issue at hand skip to the next post please
awesome

to watch one of our top draft picks at OL progressing very well. Nice surprise at G, I wonder where they go with him...
I would

hope he eventually moves to C.

Walton just turned 27
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/22/2014 12:48 pm : link
Richburg will always have value as a versatile player. He could take over at C or continue playing guard.
Lets see

who we draft/sign after this season
yeah, I like that versatility though
BillyBoy8384 : 9/22/2014 12:53 pm : link
Thats where I got that Seubert comparison. Rich played G and C whenever needed and didnt let up in his game. I hope Richburg is just like that.
Walton was signed to play center

prior to the draft. Good to see him shaking off that rust. Leave things as they are unless an injury occurs.

Re-evaluate the positions in the off-season.
Where is Schwartz

when he comes back? RG?
tom needs to look
area junc : 9/22/2014 1:13 pm : link
in the mirror and ask himself if he's going to bench Jerry or Richburg for Schwartz, who is being paid to start. would be a major mistake we've seen before
I don't know how you pull Richburg out. Jerry was signed as a backup.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/22/2014 1:15 pm : link
Put him at RG.
Schwartz to RG.
drkenneth : 9/22/2014 1:15 pm : link
Probably where he should have been all along.
re: Schwartz
GIANTSr01 : 9/22/2014 1:17 pm : link
depends how the unit is playing at that point. If they're gelling and playing well, then you've gotta keep Schwartz on the bench.

But chances are there will be an injury somewhere by the time he's back.
Richburg reminds me of Shaun O'Hara
dpinzow : 9/22/2014 1:17 pm : link
and Seubert in their early days. Barring injury he's going to be a good one

I mentioned my concerns about this in a thread yesterday. Coughlin has botched this same situation numerous times. Richburg should stay where he is this season, and have Schwartz take over at RG. Why he wasn't there the minute Snee retired is beyond me.

As for the future, I agree it depends on how the offseason shakes out. If there's a stud, Chris Snee-type guard available in round two to pair with Schwartz, then Richburg goes to C and Walton is likely a goner. If not, I could see Walton playing out both years of his deal.
Coughlin doesn't believe a player should love their

starting spot due to injury. I expect Schwartz to return if and when he's healthy.

I also expect him to play better than he did before and be a better player than Jerry...because he is.
love = lose

.
how do you just plug Schwartz in at RG....
Simms11 : 9/22/2014 1:38 pm : link
when he hasn't played one snap there yet in this offense. Richburg may be the guy sitting when Schwartz returns.
We can worry about what to do when we have too many good OL
BeerFridge : 9/22/2014 1:46 pm : link
when we're actually sure we have too many good OL. That's not yet.
If Richburg is playing great at G then leave him there
PatersonPlank : 9/22/2014 1:48 pm : link
Why open up another issue, especially if Walton is doing ok. Schwartz to RG.

Yeah they botched that during the offseason. A lot of us were screaming about Schwartz to RG, but they must have their reasons. Maybe Richburg plays RG when Schwartz comes back, but Richburg to the bench would be ridiculous if he keeps playing as well as he has. I'm having flashbacks to Diehl/Locklear and O'Hara/Seubert from season past.
while we all want to win now....
BillKo : 9/22/2014 1:57 pm : link
..you'd be kidding yourself if we weren't in a rebuilding mode. If we can be competitive during this phase, that's great.

Richburg needs to play. I don't care where, but there is zero reason to put him on the bench.

Our young players need to play.
Lose his job?
oipolloi : 9/22/2014 2:27 pm : link
Schwartz has never played a down for the Giants in the regular season. And the reason he was given the job was because of his contract. Schwartz has in no sense earned anything with his play for the Giants. If you want to say he deserves it based on what he did in KC, that's fine.

This isn't a case like Snee, where the guy gave you all he had foe ten years.
I just hope he doesn't sit

The only reason Snee was on the Giants - in the NFL for that matter - was nepotism. Everyone knows this.
Jerry and Richburg are competing for a spot
chris r : 9/22/2014 2:38 pm : link
Schwartz has one when he comes back. He wasn't given a huge contract to come off the bench.

I hope its Richburg at LG and Schwartz at RG.
oipolloi: John Jerry looked terrible in the pre-season and
Bobby Epps : 9/22/2014 2:52 pm : link
look at him now. The rest of the OL, except for Pugh, didn't look so great in the pre-season either and look at them yesterday.

My point is that Schwartz looked only OK in the pre-season but may look better in the regular season, as the other OL do now.
You can't take Richburg out of the lineup now.
arcarsenal : 9/22/2014 2:56 pm : link
And I'd leave him at G.

There's really no sense in worrying about what will happen when Schwartz can go, though. Unfortunately, this stuff usually sorts itself out via injury. Hopefully not. But. It's just one of those bridges we cross when we get there.

I think Richburg probably has more value at G going forward and I'd let him continue to play there.

Easy, Schwartz plays his natural RG position
Though Jerry played really well yesterday
bronxgiant : 9/22/2014 3:35 pm : link
Pulled well and is very tough in the running game. With the Dolphins run blocking was always his strength. He is a very physical player and maybe he was just not coached right with the Fins.
Someone needs to get benched when
Jimmy Googs : 9/22/2014 4:08 pm : link
James Brewer is back healthy too.

Too many good players and only 5 can start.
Richburg stays a starter the whole year
SGMen : 9/22/2014 4:22 pm : link
The kid is GOOD! Schwartz may not start this year. I am a big believer in OL continuity so if these five starters do well the rest of the way, until the bye, why break up a good thing?

Lets ask Shane Locklear and Jim Cordle.
I love when you guys bash the giants
djm : 9/22/2014 4:41 pm : link
When they haven't even done anything yet.

Schwartz is probably gonna be needed at some point but best case he takes Jerry's spot if everything is smooth sailing 8 weeks from now.
Richburg
Matt in SGS : 9/22/2014 4:43 pm : link
reminds me a bit of Brian Williams actually. Williams got in the Giants' lineup as a rookie at guard due to injuries. He was drafted as a center, but with Bart Oates playing well, they just played him along side Oates until he began phasing him out a few seasons later.

For right now, I don't mess with Walton in at center, but I leave Richburg at left guard and when Schwartz comes back, put him at right guard and move Jerry to the bench as depth. At some point, you know that the Giants will need all these offensive linemen to play.

This one got a laugh outta me. Well played.
Leave him at LG
JonC : 9/22/2014 5:56 pm : link
He's earned his spot in the starting lineup. GS will get his shot at RG, which is probably where he's best suited to begin with.
the problem is
area junc : 9/22/2014 6:04 pm : link
jerry was very, very good yesterday and may be the most talented guy we've got.

he's powerful inside and light on his feet working to the 2nd level. he looks like a plow horse out there.

jerry is one of those guys, you just don't understand why he isn't an All Pro because for stretches, he plays like it. then he can look horrible. yesterday, the "good Jerry" showed up and we were doing whatever we wanted between the tackles.
Richburg getting plenty of reps at Guard is only
Jimmy Googs : 9/22/2014 7:23 pm : link
a good thing. Versatility to play both Center & Guard for any interior lineman on the roster is a huge plus.

Schwartz doesn't come back until Nov 3rd so no need to worry about anything for a while. And if the line is performing well my guess is Schwartz is held in reserve because a new change would be kind of silly. Especially since that dislocated toe still may not be strong enough to withstand NFL punishment, even if healed.

Next year is next year...compete for a job. If Richburg is the best center and one of the two best Guards, my guess is he plays Guard while Walton plays Center. If Richburg is the best center and not one of the two best Guards, he should play Center. No?
Richburg stays at LG ….
Manny in CA : 9/22/2014 11:19 pm : link
For three reasons:

(1) If he excels at LG, he's helping to protect Eli's blind side. He's a lot quicker than Schwartz (which is very important; the Seubert comparison is right on)

(2) Walton is still young, proven experienced (starter with the Broncos) and doesn't have many miles on him. His best games are ahead of him

(3) Schwartz is an natural RG. (His KC highlights) ….

I think that depends on how the incumbent at RG is doing at the time that Schwartz is cleared to play.I don't think they make that evaluation any earlier than they feel they need to. If they don't think they need to he may sit.
