Nice to see the offense executing long drives

barens : 9/22/2014 1:30 pm
I know the offense has been getting a ton of flack during training camp, and the previous two weeks, but last week agains the Cardinals we saw lots of good things from the offense, and even against Detroit, the offense mounted some decent drives.

It just seems like it's been years since the offense has been able to control the ball like that with more consistently, and keep the defense off the field...even in 2011, they were fairly inconsistent throughout the year with the offensive line and running game, they relied more on big plays to bail them out(which thankfully worked in 2011).

I get that there is a long way to go in the season, but it's been nice seeing the offense on the uptick

It's really nice to see a running game again

It's been a long time since we saw that. So far, I'm liking what this new offense can bring. I'm actually still in shock though that the o-line played as good as they did. That was totally unexpected. Eli had time and I just have to say it again, WE HAD A RUNNING GAME!
Haslett will bring it on Thurs...

Oline will be tested once again. He loves to blitz Eli. If we hold up, Eli could have a big day against a suspect secondary without D. Hall.
thing that kills me

is if we are not ready during preseason than why not play the starters longer? Esp on offense practices are shorter so have them play until they get it.
I think this was my favorite

thing about our offense yesterday. We were able to maintain long drives, eating up clock and the opposing defenses' energy, yet at the same time we proved capable of striking on a big play like the 61-yarder to Cruz. Lots for the Skins' defense to think about in the next couple of days.
The keys IMO yesterday were

1) the WR's were running their assignments correctly
2) the OL is getting better and better

To me Eli was never an issue.

need somebody to take the top off the defense, at least threaten to do so. Hopefully, that's Beckham.
My concern with this offensive scheme...

is that these extended drives are giving us more chances for turning the ball over. Just the volume of plays and touches, I mean. Yesterday was fun to watch, but the turnovers are frustrating, no matter who are responsible for them.

But if anyone can get the message across about ball security to our QB, TE, WR and RBs, it's Coughlin.

executing a no huddle type offense but sustaining time eating drives

previously our hurry up offense was 10 -20 yard passes from eli
mixed up with a few draw plays .
when successful we would move down the field but super quickly.

it was great for two minute offensive drives but not so good during games when you kind of want to give the defense a rest .

this new no huddle offense is more methodical and time consuming .
The thing is, the offense was doing this last

week as well, but there were some freak things that held them back, some not even being related to the offense. Some of those things happened again yesterday, but clearly, Houston is not the same team as Arizona.

If the Giants can clean up the turnovers, I'd guess they'll be in really good shape. Funny, because in the last year and a half, even if they went turnover free, it was still a struggle.
Giants on 1st downs
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/22/2014 3:25 pm : link
12/14 (85.7%), 119 pass yds, 2 TD, 0 INT, 8.5 YPA, 141.7 Passer Rating
21 carries, 111 rush yds, 5.29 YPC

It's the best we've played on 1st downs in a long long time. It just made things so much easier to sustain drives.
The Redskins had 10 sacks against Jacksonville

and none in their other 2 games.

Preseason happens to be the only time you get to evaluate the back end of your roster. In the long run, this is perhaps more important than the first few games of a single season. Cutting to 53 means letting guys go that might have impressed if given a chance (like Washington this year).
