Not feeling great about the skins game

giantgiantfan : 9/22/2014 4:48 pm
I think this Skins team is underrated. They dropped a close game at home against a good Philly team and lost to a Texans team on the road that had Clowney and Foster playing. We don't get the opportunity of playing a one dimensional team like we did on Sunday.

We go on the road against a top 10 rushing team (31 attempts p/g for 135 yards p/g) and a top 5 passing team (40 attempts p/g for 308 p/g). That's a nice balanced offense and Cousins is certainly more than a game manager. The Giants defense hasn't been blown out and I don't think the Skins are the team that's going to do it. Our defense looked good Sunday, but will get more of a challenge this week.

On defense they are down some players, but they absolutely shut down McCoy Sunday. They are a top 5 defensive unit against the run (64.7 yard per game). Foster rushed for 103 on them while every other running game has been a no-show. Our offensive line showed something finally Sunday which is encouraging, but it may have troubles here running the ball. The passing D does suck (bottom 10) and I'm not sure what kind of pressure they've been getting on the QB though they do have 10 sacks so they are doing something right there.

I'd think the Giants should try and open up the run game via short passes so the Giants can call their offensive plays at will. On defense I get the feeling they are going to torch us for at least 2 big touchdowns. Need to pressure Cousins big time and not let Morris get going. At this point in the season I'd hope the strange turnovers the Giants have had (special teams, unforced fumbles) are over.

Do we get Beason back? I thought McClain filled in fine. What about safety? Whats going on with Stevie Brown? Outside of Beason we appear healthier than them which is a plus. Still, this game has the feel of a primetime Giants let down turned BBI implosion.

Didn't realize all 10 sacks were in a single game.

Figured they were spread out somewhat. That's nice to hear. Good stuff, I still think they can do some things on offense.

mikeinbloomfield : 9/22/2014 5:20 pm : link
yet the Redskins didn't get a sack on Foles. That's almost as surprising as the Redskins shutting down McCoy. Still, they did give up 34 points, and now their best corner is out for the year. If the Giants can bring pressure like they did yesterday, they win by 14.
It's ok
Greg from LI : 9/22/2014 5:23 pm : link
I didn't watch the Eagles game, so I don't know what happened there. Arian Foster ran well against them, and Jax is Jax so there's little to be learned there. LBs are pretty nondescript.

I don't get the worries about the Skins either
BillT : 9/22/2014 5:27 pm : link
They could win but so could any team. They have some very good talent on the offensive skill positions. Cousins is probably an upgrade to RG III. Otherwise, I don't think they have the talent the Giants do. And with their top DB going down it really gets bad in their secondary.

The addition of Hatcher..he command a double and clogs the middle..He suffered a hamstring injury and might be slowed. That will be a test for Walton..

McCoy was dancing all game..he didn't hit the whole hard at anytime and was stacked up a lot..I think he missed a yards dancing in the backfield. That being said, they have been pretty good against the run with Hatcher..

The LB'er is non-factor and they have Fletcher's replacement in Keenan Robinson..They have no one to play in space against TE's and slants..

Secondary is the biggest weakness.. They have 2nd year player Amerson who has been beat a few times and have to star they're 4th rod draft pick Breeland on the other side with Hall's absence..Merriweather is a head hunter and Clark is very slowed..

The NYG might not have a big running game against them, but i think the short passes and hurry up is going to to kill them..

Oh, and their special teams suck..Big Time..

The line is also weak..They cannot run block well or Pass protect will..Houston line ate them up..Philly has no one to pressure them..

Speaking of lines, Philly lost most of them during the game and before..They had about 4 new guys playing and they still did not give up a sack..

If bleeding blue means delusional, then no.

Let me start by saying thank you for your analysis. It seems like you put some thought into it unlike some of the replies. Let me also say I wholly disagree. I watched both the Giant's and the Skin's game yesterday and could only reach the conclusion that the Giants are the better team.

The Giants shredded a team that beat the Skins very recently while the Skins blew an early lead to lose to Philly while losing key players to injury. While the outcome may not be a foregone conclusion, I have think Giants fans should be very confident of victory on Thurs.

since they would play G-Men in three days. They surprised against the run, porous against pass. Overall a weaker team that, like Houston, we should take unless our team, as we know they sometimes do, follow the Plaxico tradition with determination and take aim at their own legs and feet, as they did in week two, and for a while in game three. Thought for just a bit there that Conor and Eric might just be right.
They
AcidTest : 9/22/2014 6:10 pm : link
are really banged up. Cofield is on short term IR. Hall is out for the season. Merriweather did not look good on Sunday. Hatcher says he'll play, but hammies are tricky (see Beckham, Odell). Not sure if Baker will be suspended. They also lost a guard, Louvau (sp?), who probably won't play on Sunday. And no Jordan Reed.

I do like Cousins, their WR, and of course Morris. Cousins can also scramble. Given that Fitzpatrick gave us fits in that regard, we need to maintain contain. On defense, Kerrigan is a good player. Orakpo is overrated. Their secondary is weak IMO. Key will be whether they have to blitz to try and get to Eli.

We have an excellent chance to win this game.

This idea gets tossed out there quite a bit. But is the home field advantage really greater because of the short week? Not, according to the linked article, if you look at the Thursday results dating back to 1970.

just like all the rest are except this Redskins team has a talent level close the the Giants. The league now has a few more quarters of Cousins film and they really got dinged up in their last game. The Redskins strength is the Giant's weakness and vice-verse...
IMO, it will depend on who doesn't eff-up the specials too badly. It will turn on a return or an OTB kick or a bad snap/hold.

will be a close game; there will be some regressions/drops/turnovers leading to easy skins points, but also more of what we saw last weekend with moving the ball well and sustaining long drives. giants will pull it out in the 4th 27-17, but i expect they will start slow and behind quickly.

geemanfan : 9/22/2014 7:23 pm : link
I look at more who the Giants faced . A Detroit team who just held Rodgers under 200 yards and Lacey to 36 yards rushing. A Cards team who is now 3 and 0 who just beat the 49rs with the same back up QB . Sure you can downgrade the win because the Texans were without Foster but not the fact that we moved the ball up and down the field against their Defense that has played pretty well.

Couple of points on Skins game
Jimmy Googs : 9/22/2014 7:39 pm : link
First, with D. Hall out they are really thin and inexperienced in secondary. Amerson is a pretty good CB but only a second year player and opposite him they have nobody. And this only makes the slot CB that much weaker too when we go with multiple WR packages.

Beatty and Pugh have to hold up versus Kerrigan and Orakpo, and if they do then Eli should have a good day. But he typically does not versus the Skins for whatever reason.

Beason is important because Morris is a load and our LBs still remain weak.

And London Fletcher (Giant killer) is finally gone!
This is a division game
JOrthman : 9/22/2014 7:44 pm : link
throw out the records and what has happened the previous games. This could go either way, but matchup wise, removing the division aspect of it, you'd say the advantage goes to the Giants.
This is a big game for the Giants.....
Doomster : 9/22/2014 8:29 pm : link
On the road, a divisional game.....

We have seen this team get better each week......will it continue? Even if it does, we may or may not win....you can play well, but sometimes that other team plays just a little better.....

This team could be in for a let down, on the road, in a short week.....Chances are, it may be the team that has the ball last, that wins this one.....hope it's the Giants....
I like our chances

as long as we're patient and disciplined and make them earn their points. An aggressive pass rush would be nice.

Win one game and all of sudden we're a force to be reckoned with. I just don't get BBI sometimes.

In today's NFL you can't underestimate anyone - Washington included. Cousins has been playing well. They have an excellent running game. They can rush the passer from the edge. And they've been playing well against the Giants the last few years.

Are the Skins a good team? No. They're 1-2.

Are the Giants? No. They're 1-2.

It's all going to come down to who can run the ball best.

It's all subjective at this point
blueblood'11 : 9/23/2014 7:50 am : link
It's really hard to tell how good either one of these teams really are. Only time will tell. Whether the Giants win or lose this game it's tough to say. Both teams have to deal with a short work week and the fact the Skins are coming off a tough loss and Giants have gained some much needed momentum and are fresh off a good win could play in their favor.
What evidence is there of this??

All of their sacks on the season came in the Jacksonville game. Big ol' goose egg for the Eagles and Texans games.

You must not get it all the time, since this one isn't hard to figure out.

Not many people are suggesting we're a force to be reckoned with. At the same time, most people feel the same about Washington. So if we suck, and they suck - why exactly should we be concerned over facing them?

Oh, I get it all the time.

The Giants historically play up or down to the level of competition, particularly in NFC East games.

I'm not saying Washington is a playoff caliber team - I predicted a 5 win season for them earlier this month. But I am saying they are a dangerous team, as evidenced by their game on Sunday against the 3-0 Eagles. They came within a field goal of tying that game at the very end, and very easily could've stolen a win in Philadelphia.

The phrase "On Any Given Sunday" actually has merit. As Beezer said, I'm concerned about every game we play. Especially this season.
Something is going unsaid about the Philadelphia Eagles
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/23/2014 9:47 am : link
Their defense is lame too.

They've allowed the most points scored of all NFC East teams.
Ten Top Hammer
George : 9/23/2014 10:25 am : link
True. Philadelphia has surrendered 78 points, most in the NFC East.

And there are the NY Giants, right behind them with 77 points against.

Remind me why everyone is so confident right now????

The difference is the Giants have been getting better defensively
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/23/2014 10:29 am : link
each week, and have some talent to work with.

The Eagles weren't a good defense last year either and didn't really improve their talent level.

Wk1: 17 points (Jacksonville)
Wk2: 24 points (Colts)
Wk3: 34 points (Redskins)
Well, we can play the stats game all day long
George : 9/23/2014 10:36 am : link
The Redskins offense, ranked 2nd in the NFL right now:

Game 1, vs. Houston: 6 points.
Game 2, vs. Jax: 41 points.
Game 3, vs. Phil: 34 points.

That's a lot better than our 25th ranked offense:

Game 1, vs. Detroit: 14 points.
Game 2, vs. Arizona: 14 points.
Game 3, vs. Houston: 30 points.

Their defense is ranked 4th in the NFL. Ours is ranked 22nd.

Look, I'm not saying the Giants will lose and I'm not saying Washington is a great team. I don't think that's the main point of the original thread post. But Washington is not a pushover, and the Giants are not a great team. This will be a tough game.

All games are tough...
rsjem1979 : 9/23/2014 10:40 am : link
...that's how the league is crafted.

I just quibble with the idea that the Redskins are "underrated" because they barely lost to a very flawed Eagles team and pulverized the wretched Jaguars.

Washington has been awful basically forever
Greg from LI : 9/23/2014 10:54 am : link
So I'd say that outweighs a three game sample where one of the games was against the worst team in football.
Feel free to look at Philadelphia's defense last year
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/23/2014 11:14 am : link
it's not a 3 game sample. They don't have much talent, and haven't done much to address it

Same for Washington, who actually lost a lot of talent to injury. That game sunday was a shootout for a reason. These are both offense-first teams.
Greg and Ten Ton
George : 9/23/2014 11:21 am : link
OK. So let's put aside for a moment the facts that Washington won the NFC East 20 months ago and that they had one of the only undefeated teams in football on the ropes two days ago.

Are you really prepared to declare that the Giants - these New York Giants of 2014 - ought not be terribly concerned about their opponents this week?

Really?

Really???

Terribly concerned?
rsjem1979 : 9/23/2014 11:27 am : link
About an average football team? Relax already, you're going to hurt yourself.

They should have the appropriate level of concern and preparation. Just like I'd suggest every week, since the Giants aren't good enough to overlook anybody.

That said, this fan-driven belief that an "underrated" opponent is somehow going to catch the team itself off guard is utter lunacy. If the Giants lose, it won't be because they aren't prepared for what the Redskins do.
please consult the note attached to my earlier post
Greg from LI : 9/23/2014 11:29 am : link
I said that the Giants could lose the game because, like the Redskins, they aren't a very good team either.
