Ray Rice...I believe the ESPN story

MikeN in Ottawa : 9/23/2014 10:09 am
watched the Steve Bisciotti presser yesterday and then the OTL reaction on ESPN which had one of the writers of the story interviewed.

After watching both, I believe the story. I think it is a fairly typical corporate tactic to attack the messenger as opposed to dealing with the facts of the story which is that the Ravens and the NFL messed up big time. While I thought Bisciotti was forthcoming for the most part I also thought he engaged in an ass covering exercise by saying this all came from Rice's lawyers, agents and friends.

As the ESPN writer mentioned, many of the sources came from within the Ravens organization. To hear Bisciotti say he didn't think anyone would lose their job over this made me laugh.

I do agree with Bisciotti that their integrity and honesty was attacked but I also think rightly so. I personally believe there is little doubt the Ravens tried to get the least possible suspension for Rice and his excuse as to why he did not ask for the video inside the elevator just doesn't wash with me. Bisciotti said he was never given the information that Darren Saunders got from the cop about the video. To me, if he didn't, he should have and that alone should be enough to cost someone their job.

more than anyone else involved. That doesn't excuse what he did, but atleast he admitted it.

The NFL/Ravens handling of this has been nothing short of miserable. Several people should lose their jobs over this.
Was listening to CBS Sports radio last night
Bramton1 : 9/23/2014 10:32 am : link
Was shocked at how the host gave the Ravens the benefit of the doubt so easily. They were attacking ESPN for just wanting to get the story out, and didn't care about accuracy (although there was probably some rival attacking in there).

And the same organization that presently employs Ray Lewis passes itself off as the crusading journalistic organ.
My take is that the team and the NFL
SwirlingEddie : 9/23/2014 10:48 am : link
initially believed that the greater harm to their organizations would come from a portrayal of Rice as a bad guy rather than any backlash that might come from appearing soft on domestic violence.

When this turned out to be a mistake and the public outcry over the league's repeated soft stand against violence came to a head with the public airing of the elevator video, both the team and the league office tried to reverse course. They have been relatively unsuccessful in doing so and now as a result appear to be both liars and too tolerant of their stars' violent and criminal acts.

this story and to some degree this issue will slowly peter out. All parties lawyer up, NFL forms committees and hire a few women, he said - he said and the football public moves on. The fact that there wasnt a thread on this yesterday bears that out to me. Already no one is talking about AP any more
The only one who potentially comes out of this looking good
Section331 : 9/23/2014 10:49 am : link
is John Harbaugh, if it is true that he wanted to cut Rice immediately. This is another reason Goodell should resign. He is too cozy with ownership. Now, yes, I understand he works for the owners, but his #1 responsibility is the welfare of the league, and he showed extremely poor judgment in agreeing with the Ravens on granting leniency initially.

Goodell's presser should have been a wake up call to all owners, do they really want that guy representing the NFL? He was an absolute embarrassment. The bottom line is that he is either lying about not seeing the video, or he is utterly incompetent.

When he suspended Sean Payton, he answered Payton's claims of ignorance by saying that not knowing was no excuse, he should have known. Well the same standard should apply to Goodell.
Even if they didn't get the video
Gman11 : 9/23/2014 11:07 am : link
do you mean to tell me that when the first video went viral the Ravens didn't call Rice into their office and ask him, "What the hell went on in that elevator?"

I think a lot of this
PaulBlakeTSU : 9/23/2014 12:18 pm : link
is just people looking for successful people to be ripped to shreds-- whether it's Rice, Bisciotti, Gooddell, or others in the NFL.

The NFL and the Ravens did what leagues and teams have always done when one of their players did a piece of shit thing in the offseason that has nothing to do with the sport. They gave a punishment-- which is viewed as way too light by many people-- even though they are not required to punish him and it has no impact on the on-the-field product (not an issue of cheating). The NFL (and other sports leagues) have NEVER been effective at regulating the off-the-field conduct of their athletes. The NFL is trying, and it's standards and methodology has proven faulty and arbitrary.

But this time, it turned out that there was graphic video evidence that quenched our culture's thirst for shock and violence. If this entire ordeal were anything more than bloodlust, then domestic violence and terrible off-the-field behavior wouldn't be such an epidemic.

Ray fucked up bigtime but at least he's been cooperative since this all went down. People insinuate that he was part of a coverup - he wasn't, at all. Also, where's the vitriol for a psychopath like Dwyer? What he did was way worse because it was a PATTERN, it was multiple times, involved his wife and kid, and threatened to kill himself (a truly manipulative tactic).

As unbelievable as this may seem, Ray is turning into a pariah/scapegoat.
In fairness, Dwyer appears to have significant mental health issues.

I think the Cardinals did the right thing with him, let him get help.

Now why it took so long...
Best guess is ESPN has a few items correct, but not the whole story.
Tom in NY : 9/23/2014 4:17 pm : link
Biscotti handed out copies of his text message exchange with Rice yesterday. If Rice has something that contradicts this, today is the day to come forward with it.

If the Ravens sent many letters to the A.C. Prosecutor's office...then today would be a good day for ESPN to get copies of them distributed as the Ravens claim they sent only 1 letter.

ESPN gets stories wrong on a regular basis. They made an accusation with their story, and need to back it up with facts, not "20 unnamed sources."

That has done more for more people than any of you will ever do. He fucked up in a moment of passion. Doesn't matter if he was baited ( which it looks like) or not. What he responded with was caught on tape, he now has to answer to all the morons in society that have nothing better to do but judge someone else without revealing their own transgressions.

What he did was reprehensible. What he did for his community before hand was commendable. He does not deserve to lose his job because society says he needed to. Most of the American public are idiots, that's a fact, anyone that has ever watched Survivor or American Idol is no longer allowed an opinion.

The worst part of the whole mess isn't that Ray Rice is the devil or that the Ravens had no precedence to go on to handle this, it's that TMZ wins. TMZ is what's wrong with society. You idiots that condemn other people without actually achieving anything in your own lives is what's wrong with society.

Go out and do 1/4 of what Ray Rice has done for underprivileged children, you can't, you won't. Shut the fuck up, you know nothing about the situation, and none of you are qualified to speak about it.

Cue sheep video now...

He fucked up, in a moment of passion. He needs to pay for that but why should society, that has nothing better to do than judge people that make more money than them have a say in it. There is something seriously wrong when sponsors start dictating who plays and who doesn't.

Sponsors have ruined the game as we knew it. Money favors the idiots that buy unnecessary wares. The more people that buy into corporate sponsorship as rule makers can only accelerate the demise of the sport and society.

Give the man man his due. Research what he meant to Baltimore. Hey, no one hates the a Ravens more than me as a Jints fan. I wasted several thousand dollars and my time to watch Billick dominate Fassel like he was his bitch. I saw it first hand but the bottom line is Ray Rice was better for Baltimore than most other players are for their citys.

You need to prove yourself better for your community before you get to comment on what a better citizen did wrong. Unpopular? Sure but like I said, most people with no credentials shouldn't have an opinion.

Simple question, got an answer?

I don't expect one, it's easy to agree with the non factors that frequent this board but if I dropped credentials on you as a volunteer in my community that would include names such as Willie Stargell, Michael Jordan, Clyde Simmons, Carl Banks, Lee Rouson, and a couple others that have been involved at the Y. Trot Nixon in baseball, whom I talked into coaching the Traveling team this past season that got invited to the National Championships ( and I swear I didn't do it just because a Trot was a Yankee killer). My point is, what have you done that qualifies you to comment on the life of someone that has helped hundreds of kids?

He pled guilty to obstructing justice in the case. His bloody clothes have never been found. Whether he held the men down while they were stabbed, stabbed them, or just helped cover it up (the latter point virtually no one disputes), he played a role in their deaths. And he pled guilty to doing so.

Some stupid shit about wait 20 seconds or some shit.

Actually Harbaugh's denied he wanted to cut Rice. Could be a lie but that's pretty much my point. Why would the Ravens go to such extremes to protect Ray Rice? Maybe because he had political connections with every major politician that helped out charities in the Baltimore area. Please don't forget how close Baltimore is to Washington. Who's to believe who?

Fact is Rice was a major figure in Baltimore, not quite Cal Ripken but the football's equivalent. Until you research Rice's accomplishment's don't tell me he deserved what has happened. You're just naive if you genie vet the hype...

you can accept that the guy did a ton of charity work before the incident, and you can believe he isn't irredeemable after it, but you're going to great pains to minimize what he actually did. And that makes sense, because it was awful. It's a feeding frenzy and people are probably incapable of seeing a broader picture in their haste to fall over themselves with rote denunciations, but all of this happened because of something horrible that he did. He could have killed her. He could have done serious and permanent damage to her. It was an awful act.

Only two on the record sources are tied to Ray Rice

Claimed AQ Shipley was watching the Ravens home opener at Ray Rices house when he was playing in Denver

Or the organization that admitted they handled it poorly, made mistakes and have to do better in the future and the owner who had a press conference and took questions for an hour?

Can you please explain to me your theory behind how this works? People who have done more for their community are allowed to do worse things?

Or only people who have done a certain amount for their community are allowed to pass judgment on anybody else? If so, why is any citizen allowed to serve on a jury without a community service requirement?

Is someone who's done community service, but also done something horrible to another human, better than someone who has neither done community service nor harmed anyone else?

I feel that the overwhelming majority of people, including Ray Rice, deserve a second chance for their f***-ups in the right circumstances. Your reasoning is mind-numbingly fucking stupid, though.
Mike
Rocky Thompson : 9/23/2014 11:10 pm : link
People who have done more for their community are allowed to pass judgement.

That should eliminate 99% of the public from having an opinion.

It runs deeper than that, the sheep are allowing corporate sponsors to dictate what is acceptable. That's the problem with social media, most of you have absolutely no clue about what your protesting about or what the result will be.

Do the research on Ray Rice, if you don't see how connected he was and why the Ravens risked all this crap to protect him! then we can only disagree on how it has been handled. But IMO, the person doing most of the suffering is his wife exclusively because of TMZ.
