Stevie Brown replaced as starting safety but by who?

nygiants16 : 9/23/2014 2:36 pm
According to the beat writers...Berhe ran with the 1st team Monday during pactice BUT Demps ran with the first team today during practice..

The theme seems to be that Brown is no longer the starter but the question is who do the Giants go with to replace him? Berhe or Demps...

Me personally i would go berhe put him in the box and let him play like he is comfortable doing and thats attacking teh ball..Let Rolle play over the top like a ball hawk...

I look forward to seeing Berhe play

and think he's very talented yet Demps is the player I'm more comfortable with at this point.
maybe they bumped Stevie to 3rd string
GIANTSr01 : 9/23/2014 2:39 pm : link
and want to get Demps some reps in case Behre struggles?
Well Demps is the one with the body of work for fans

to look at, but thats not saying much.

Behre is an unknown, really. We've seen him make big hits but how is he in coverage, which is what Brown was benched for in the first place?
Maybe they will rotate them

Demps playing as a starting safety would be just as bad as Stevie
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/23/2014 2:48 pm : link
has been playing. He is strictly a special teamer.
who comes in on the 3 safety look?
Simms11 : 9/23/2014 2:48 pm : link
Brown or Demps?
Apparently, it's Demps
Jerry in 329 : 9/23/2014 2:49 pm : link
tweets from the writers at practice indicate Demps
Demps is awful
pjcas18 : 9/23/2014 2:50 pm : link
and the good news is he's equally awful against the run and pass, so it's not like you have to decide when he should be out there. It's never.

I believe Demps was the 5th safety in camp behind Rolle, Hill, Brown, Taylor, and maybe even 6th behind Berhe.

the Giants have suffered a suspension, IR and poor play, and he still seen just 1 snap on D all year. Berhe, a 5th round rookie has seen 23 snaps.

Be careful,
NYGmen58 : 9/23/2014 2:51 pm : link
the Giants defensive scheme does not feature a simple FS (deep safety) and SS (in the box) deployment. Based on the formation and shifts/motion, the safeties roles change pre-snap, which why sometimes Rolle is playing "centerfield" over the top and other times he is up close to the line with the other safety back deep.

As Eric and I have tried to explain to some of the folks on here, this is why Fewell and the Giants like their safeties to be versatile over the years and interchangeable.

They're giving Stevie's knee a rest, considering it's a short week.
No, they're not giving his knee a rest.
Jimmy Googs : 9/23/2014 2:54 pm : link
They are giving his poor decision-making a rest.
That's what I hoping too
prh : 9/23/2014 2:57 pm : link
But given the coach's reluctance to change regarding starters you never know.
Rolle is not best suited to playing deep center field
Hammer : 9/23/2014 3:00 pm : link
He has a habit of taking bad angles to the ball.
Last season, the defense took a step forward
Jimmy Googs : 9/23/2014 3:07 pm : link
when Hill came back from suspension, allowing Rolle to free lance more and more, and he started making a ton of plays.

Then Beason came on board and the defense took another step forward by really containing a bunch of solid running games.

Now they weren't great, particularly with pass rush, but we need that deep Safety confidence to come from somebody for this Defense to step up again.
IIRC, I read at draft time that

Behre has a tendency of trying to get into the action and leaving his guy uncovered.
I wonder how Kenny Phillips' knees are?
Reese's Pieces : 9/23/2014 4:03 pm : link
The Giants did offer him a contract last year (obviously a poor one) and we know how much John Mara thought of him.

Just daydreaming, Giants don't make desperate moves.

with two rookies playing safety. Staying deeper than the deepest guy is not rocket science(unless your name is Stevie Brown). For those who think Brown's performance is injury related look at the tape from AJ Green's touchdown against us in 2012.

WY +1

The other poster is correct in that the safety deployments aren't always standard, but Stevie's mistakes tend to occur when he's in deep looks coming forward and losing track of the deepest receiver.
FWIW

I just heard on NFL Live that Demps took all the reps today and that Berhe told reporters he "only took mental reps". Interesting that Berhe was the next man up in a game scenario but doesn't appear to be getting the nod with time to prepare.

I'm just gonna say it once and get it out of the way for the week: I think Demps is an awful safety, don't care about his experience, and would rather take a chance with the rookie.

I agree with you.
Jimmy Googs
Matt M. : 9/23/2014 4:47 pm : link
I attributed Rolle's improved play more on Beason coming in than Hill.
They were within a few games of each other
Jimmy Googs : 9/23/2014 6:18 pm : link
if I recall correctly (Hill and Beason) so not sure who was the bigger influence.

All I am saying is that Rolle had confidence that Hill would be back there in pass support so he could go roam around, jump routes, blitz occasionally, etc.

Berhe

Might learn. Brown has shown he cannot. Demps, at best, is iffy.
