Mcconaughey probably would have seemed like an odd choice for a role like this. Doesn't mean Vince Vaughn will have a similarly excellent performance, but I wouldn't count him out just because he's been sort of typecast to playing the same character essentially in all of his movies...
He used to do more dramatic roles until Old School. I think he's starting to realize it's about time to go back to it. No one believes in a 40+ fratboy, especially when it's done over and over and over...
prove he has the chops and I think many people will be pleasantly surprised. And although Vaughn has more or less skated for the last decade playing not so subtle variations of the guy from Wedding Crashers as others have pointed out he's done drama before.
I have high hopes and I'd love to hear more about the story. Remember the little snippet about the "secret, occult history of the US transportation system?
You can replace VV with MM in some of the reactionary comments to
And I think McConaughey is a better comparison to the Farrell casting. Two actors who had impressive dramatic acting performances on their resumes, but for the most part played not so challenging pretty boy roles.
I actually generally like Vaughn, I've just never seen him give a quality dramatic performance, tho that's not to say I don't think he's capable of it.
As long as Pizzolatto is in charge tho, I'm sure Season 2 will be great tv.
He's made some really bad career choices, but at his best he's excellent.
I dont think they're bad choices, it actually appears pretty calculated on his part. For American movies he tends to take action roles in potential blockbuster type movies. In England he takes more serious roles in smaller films, and those who have seen them know he's good. It's pretty simple, really: he comes to America to get paid and "hones his craft" back at home.
is the best "I had no idea he was this good" acting years in recent history, atleast for me. I just thought he was just a guy who was successful for being a lady-killing Texan. He changed my perception of him forever after this past year and a half or so. Dude is a truly talented actor.
Colin Farrell is a good actor, but they've been trying to make him the biggest actor in Hollywood for a while now but he just doesn't receive that kind of love from the public. He's an All-Star but not an MVP candidate. Maybe this is the role that gets him over the top with the general public and gets him onto that MVP level when it comes to popularity/perception. I think he'll do a great job in True Detective season 2.
Vince Vaughn is interesting. He's been playing the older ex-Frat guy for a while now. But he's done drama in the past. I wonder how he'll do. I would hate it if he used that dry sarcastic humor for True Detective, I think it could ruin the show. I hope he just plays this straight and serious.
Vaughn sucks. They will write him into the series just fine, but he just isn't very good. What sucks is he will likely be the villain which also kinda blows knowing that up front.
Either way, it's Pizzolatto's writing that matters in the end. He's the start of the show and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.
Elicited creepiness well in Clay Pigeons and Psycho. Before his characters became stale, he was fantastic with his glib banter.
I have faith in Pizzolatto after season 1 just as I had faith in Christopher Nolan when Heath Ledger was announced as the Joker.
I just hope they bring back director Cary Joji Fukunaga. It appears that Justin Lin (the recent few Fast and Furious movies) is signed on to direct first two episodes)

You'd have thought after season 1 they'd be given the benefit of the doubt
