I had no idea of this and started to google it and apparently, one of the advisors for the Brooklyn Bolts (their are 4 teams: Brooklyn, Boston, Omaha and Miami) is none other than Rod Rust.
I'm only 25 so I don't recall Mr. Rust and he who shall remain nameless but I thought some of you older guys might get a kick outta this.
Guess some guys just can't get rid of the itch to coach/be around football, no matter how bad it is.
I think it was in the late 1960s and the Giants brought in a QB named Kennedy (Tom?).
Pepper said they would call their own defenses

When representatives of the two New York teams could not agree on the six players to be transferred, NFL comissioner Bert Bell drew names from a hat...the six players assigned to the Giants were Ends Otto Schnellbacher, Dan Garza, Backs Harman Rowe and Tom Landry, Tackle Arnie Weinmeister and Guard John Mastrangelo...the remaining NY Yankees players were to be transferred to the New York Bulldogs.
Meanwhile the Giants drove their fellow NFL compatriots then called the Bulldogs to insolvency by controlling the best stadium dates, having to pay fees, ect.
John Mara was allowed - even encouraged in a way - to to this by NFL PResident Joe Carr. One of the unintended consequences from the fallout of the first AFL after 1926 was the new franchise charter granted to the Brooklyn Lions. Mara gave them a loan during the season to keep them afloat (in attempt to keep C.C. Pyle putting another team in Ebbets Field) which they defaulted on when the franchise and league both folded.
To help recoup his money, Mara was granted the Brooklyn charter to Mara to lease to any team that wanted to play within the five boroughs. These teams would include the New York Yankees (1927-28), Staten Island Stapeltons (1929-32), Brooklyn Dodgers/Tigers (1930-44) and New York Bulldogs/Yanks (1949-51).
One of the stipulations of the charter was the Giants had first choice of home dates and were able to put limitations of conflicting home dates. Those stipulations were relaxed for the Brooklyn and Staten Island teams, but were strictly enforced against the teams playing in Yankee Stadium, as it was within walking distance of the Polo Grounds.
The New York Yanks moved in 1952 and spent one season as the Dallas Texans. They had no luck there either. The owners abandoned the team halfway through the season and the NFL took the franchise over. During the offseason the charter was sold and the franchise was reborn in Baltimore as the new Colts.
The alternate explanation to the dispersal of the AAFC Yankees players is that Ted Collins failed to show and as a result Commissioner Bert Bell made the Bulldogs selections for Collins...advantage Mara...
The NY territorial rights may have been good for the NFL originally but even without Collins wild spending ways the indemnity he had to pay ( I've heard it was $200,000) and the totally unattractive dates he had for home games were losers in and of themselves...
So whether being smart, fortunate or shrewd it all went Mara's way.
Since I have always played against the Mariners, I hate you for no reason
That move cost Elmer Layden his position as President of the NFL and Bell's installment as the first commissioner. Plus, Mara had a personal dislike for Dan Topping who owned the Yankees.
