I don't get the Redskins love/confidence

JOrthman : 9/25/2014 12:09 am
I've been watching all the shows picking the Skins to win, listening to all the analysis, reading the message boards, etc...And I don't get all the love their getting. I get the home field advantage on a short week, but they are coming into this game very beat up and nothing I've seen watching them has really impressed me. I understanding people picking them, but it's that EVERYONE seems to have them winning and winning easily.

when you combine the injuries on their offensive line with an inexperienced QB facing a real pass rush and the best pair of cover corners in DRC and Prince he's seen in his short career on Thursday, Kirk Cousins is about to come crashing back to earth. Hard.
I haven't noticed much "love"
bradshaw44 : 9/25/2014 12:26 am : link
But I understand people picking them. I mean, we've been less than spectacular. The skins have put up big numbers two weeks in a row.

This coming from the biggest skins hater on this board.

They've been gushing about Cousins and I haven't heard anyone give us a chance yet. I can see them winning, but I dont' understand why everyone is so confident in them.

Some people just cannot get it through their thick skull just how poor the Eagle defense clealry is. I listen to podcasts too and i keep hearing the same thing. "Their defense improved"

Really? Is that why the Redskins bombed them with 500 yards. Phillys D didn't even touch Cousins I dont think and oh yeah, he played vs Jacksonville right?? We'll see! Their run defense is pretty good though. Eli Manning i think will throw 300.
We should win

Everyone thinks the Cardinals are all great. Who was the better team that day? The Giants were. And if it weren't for bogus calls and spotting them 7 on first drive and two gift fumbles, we beat them. The Redskins haven't beaten anyone good yet. It's time to see what they've got. When we rush 5, we seem unstoppable on the line right now. Ayers is better than I thought and Moore is exactly what I hoped he would be. Let's go Blue!!

For some reason
SLIM : 9/25/2014 5:07 am : link
People love Kirk Cousins. He's lit up the scoreboard for 2 weeks against bad defenses but they conveniently forget how bad he was last year.

The Giants also for whatever reason seem to get a lot of hate. As others pointed out, we basically dominated the Cardinals and then proceeded to hand the game over to them with the help of some bad officiating.

Bottom line - 3 weeks into the season and nobody knows anything right now. Unless a team starts of 0-6 like we did last year, it takes until about 6 games before you can begin to formulate ideas. I expect we will get better and the Redskins historically get worse as they have no depth.
My hunch
Don in DC : 9/25/2014 6:41 am : link
that we are going to beat them handily. They are very banged up, lots of injuries, lots of walking wounded. Eli and the offence were very efficient against the Texans, and should be able to put up big numbers against this Redskins defense. Cousins and the skins offence will be very manageable for our D, assuming we can stuff Morris.

We need to play a clean game. If we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot vs. Arizona, we'd have the potential to be 3-1 after tonight.
They're very good at the skill positions.
Ira : 9/25/2014 6:57 am : link
Cousins did have a bad season last year, but so did Eli. It happens. Cousins was good as a rookie and more importantly, he's been very good so far this season. Who was that Japanese guy who said never underestimate your opponent?

The media

and a lot of fans are in love with high scoring offenses and don't take the time to analyze match ups. They just look at points scored. Points given up, escape their scrutiny.

Plus, Philadelphia has been anointed the favorite and Washington just took them to the limit.

If we come out physical, we win.
By the numbers

The Snyders have been playing better than anyone we've faced. How I don't know, but if we are any good, we will find out tonight.
It's not love for Cousins, it's ...
FStubbs : 9/25/2014 7:47 am : link
... hate for RG3. They (the players on the team and the media) think he's an uppity pre-madonna and want to show him his place. The line blocks better, the receivers fight for balls, and the defense is amped up when Cousins is in the game compared to RG3. Being stuck in Washington territory, I've seen this pattern when them when Cousins comes in.
Skins have faced Houston, jags, eagles
mattlawson : 9/25/2014 7:49 am : link
Not exactly the great defenses of the league. Well find out how good our d is while they find out how good their offense is.

I guess I haven't been watching as much sporting news as I used to. I have been listening to the sports junkies and they aren't even hyping the skins all that much though. But that's really all I listen too, sportswise. Besides what I read here. Also, fans aren't really saying much either. That I know of anyway.

What gives me pause on being confident tonight is the stats on Thursday night games. Recent history has shown that the home team has a very good winning percentage.

As far as the quality of each team, the Bravehearts don't scare me. While their offense has looked good the last two weeks, it wasn't against good defenses. For me it comes down to us being able to control Morris and not turning the ball over.

mrvax : 9/25/2014 8:19 am : link
tells me the Giants win this one from a psychological standpoint.

When players are playing banged up & bruised they generally give less than 100%. Example: Justin Tuck.

The Giants, from Coughlin down are sick and tired of losing. Sick of shooting themselves in the foot. They believe they have the talent to win and proved it last week. I see them very highly motivated to get the ship headed in the right direction.

Giants 37, Redskins 24.

I don't feel as confident as others heading into this one.

The Skins always keep it close. The Gmen made Rex Grossman look like Johnny U
Thursday Night games
JOrthman : 9/25/2014 8:24 am : link
I think more of that has to do with the match ups. The first week was the Packers and the juggernaught of Seattle at home. Seattle is very good at home anyway and Greenbay hasn't looked very good so far this year. Last week you had the ATL and Bucs game which is simliar to the week one game. ATL is very good at home and the Bucs suck. Yes the Ravens won over the Stealers, but the Stealers hadn't looked that good against anyone until last week.
I watched the quick version of the Eagle/Skins game last night
Jimmy Googs : 9/25/2014 8:27 am : link
and there was a marked difference in Cousins from the first half versus the second.

In the first half, he was sharp with his passes, spread the ball around to numerous receivers, and made the Eagles defend sideline to sideline with quick throws. This Redskin offense would be difficult to stop.

In the second half, he lost his accuracy and was missing receivers a lot more, and was not on the same page with them either. Didn't really see any meaningful difference in pressure but difficult to analyze coverages on tv. This is the Cousins I remember from last season.

Beg to differ
trueblueinpw : 9/25/2014 8:31 am : link
Our beloved Big Blue has one win but I'm not sure it was a "complete game". Just saying.... Anyway, Fail to the Foreskins!
A lot of pundits fell in love with the Eagles this year,
Section331 : 9/25/2014 8:32 am : link
and with Wash's close game last weekend, they're reading a lot into that. Wash may be better, or it could be a case of division rivals playing over their heads.

It's almost as if some people just completely skipped over the 2013 Giants season. It's pretty incredible to keep reading comments like this over and over.

Nevermind backups in general, this same Kirk Cousins did nothing against us when we played him last year.

It'll be a tight game, it won't be an easy one but we can win and I think we will. I think we have a better team.
These NFL games are hard to predict
Essex : 9/25/2014 8:35 am : link
my guess is that this game is a tossup. We will struggle to cover Garcon and Jackson, they will struggle to cover our passing game. The former because their receivers are really good, and the latter because their secondary is that bad. In other words, who will do better, our good CBs in containing their excellent receivers or our medicore receivers in exploiting their horrendous secondary. Whoever gets that advantage will win the game.

Not to mention the fact that we are healthier and our secondary is much better then last year.

Exactly, exactly, exactly. Any responsible football fan of ANY team who saw that game would -- no, should -- say the same thing.
The homefield advantage on a Thursday night
Big Blue '56 : 9/25/2014 8:41 am : link
is bigger than general, imv. Yes, we've won on the road on a Thursday night, but I don't expect one tonight. Yes, they have injuries, but for ONE night, before a national audience, subs can effectively do their job as we've seen time and again through the years..
My main concerns...
rptl530 : 9/25/2014 8:42 am : link
Helu & Morris vs. NYG OLB's and Jackson vs. NYG deep safety.

I'll take my chances vs. Morris and the run game but NYG can't be playing from behind (10+ points). That's when the turnovers multiply.

Oh, and don't have a special teams fuckup.
I'm always waiting for the other shoe
Simms11 : 9/25/2014 8:44 am : link
to drop with this team. They've been so inconsistent the last few years. They have one good game only to take a step back the following week. I guess I can't be confident for that reason alone, but on top of that, the Skins want redemption on national TV and have lost like their last 7 division games. Regardless of their injuries, this is going to be a very tough one for us to win. Luck is going to have to be on our side this week.
I've checked a few online predictions and the majority
USAF NYG Fan : 9/25/2014 8:59 am : link
show the Giants winning.

However, I've watched a few videos on nfl.com and see what you mean. Very few of the talking heads have seemed to notice how much the Giants have improved each week. I've heard one or two say that Eli is still throwing interceptions when he threw 0 on Sunday. Granted I think Eli a gunslinger and he will throw interceptions but that's not a comment you make after throwing none the previous game.

All I can think of is that they don't have time (or don't take the time) to actually watch every game. They look at the stats, highlights, maybe lowlights, etc. That's why we occasionally hear one of them say the defense is allowing too many points or Eli is struggling. They have looked at the stats from the last 3 games without noticing that we have dramatically improved (especially Eli).
Don't see Cousins as a backup QB

Cousins isn't a bad QB
mrvax : 9/25/2014 9:26 am : link
he may become good over time. He is still inexperienced. I expect to see him do slightly better than he did the last time he faced the NY Football Giants.

The Giants win this game. Be patient if it starts crappy. They will win.
I think it's less about Redskins love
JonC : 9/25/2014 9:28 am : link
and more about no confidence or belief in the Giants.

If we hit the field and dictate the action like we did against the Texans, we'll win this game.
The formula is very simple.
nicky43 : 9/25/2014 9:28 am : link
New York is a bigger market than Washington. Negative news draws a bigger audience than positive news. So put the negative news on the bigger market and you draw a bigger audience. This is one of the main reasons why the press is often down on NYG even at times when they should not be.

Does anybody STILL believe reporting is about reality?

do not do analytical analysis of the teams. They go by statistics like points scored points allowed etc. and other guys opinions. They have to make a call on the whole card every week and that would be too much work, Easier to go with the flow. Vegas with the vig is money driven by where the bets are going. No one knows thier teams weaknesses and strenghts like a die hard fan. Thats if they are honest with themselves.
Both teams are 1-2
RinR : 9/25/2014 10:43 am : link
but I guess the talking heads have liked what they've seen more in the Redskins 3 games than the Giants.

And I dont get all the love for Cousins. He is something like 1-5 as a starter. I know I am in the minority when I say this but I'd rather be facing him than RG3.
