Wash/NYG postgame discussion...

jcn56 : 9/25/2014 11:30 pm
I guess to try and keep the game thread from hitting 50,000 pages.

So, that was fun, right?

I know he returned to the game. Did anyone here anything about his injury?

Just that it was a thigh injury and he returned. He stayed in the rest of the game from when he came in, so I'm guessing he's okay. Plus, due to this be a Thursday game, he now has a few extra days to rest it between now and next Sunday's game, which is nice.
being exposed

For not being athletic is one thing. Being exposed for missing multiple assignments is another

I would agree with that. He deserves to be benched just like Stevie was benched for poor play.

You can't blow assignments for huge plays like that.

Not sure what the solution is with Beason and Kennard injured. When you're almost out of LBs a backup like Herzlich is going to be exposed a few times

It wasn't just exposure. He had trouble with the play call on a couple of big plays. He picked up Morris then kept releasing him to no one to get back over to McClain. He was pulled I think after that play. And he actually did it again in the 2nd half.

He really is. And to think we could have lost out on him to the Jets. Thank God Reese gave the okay for the big contract. He's worth it.
Great win obviously.

The efficiency of the offense is really seen in the easier 3rd down chances it creates. I commented on that in a preseason thread after watching the Packers' offense. I've always felt red zone efficiency is largely based on play design and we're seeing it now. They're isolating their biggest mismatch and going to it repeatedly in numerous ways.

Eli, Larry Donnell, and Prince Amukamara all played outstanding games. DRC's addition has made Prince's life much easier. The o-line was also fabulous.

The only negative was Herzlich. On 2 separate plays, he was completely clueless. It was ugly to watch.

The non-TD on the Randle play was quite possibly the worst call I've ever seen. If that's not a TD, then WTF are we doing?

Can't believe that in a game where the Giants dominate from start to finish and win by 31 points that people are actually focusing on Herzlich.
Also nice,

we got Beckham another 10 days of rest and got the win without him. Hopefully, he is ready to go in 10 days at home. Man, would that be awesome...

Well, we got away with it tonight, but those are two big plays directly on Herzlich, and a better team makes us pay for them.

The effort and heart is there from Beatty, you look at Eli's rushing TD, after basically the entire line pancaked their respective man, Beatty was the first up and in the endzone looking for another guy to hit.
Beatty was horrible last year
chris r : 9/26/2014 12:58 am : link
but the year before he earned his contract. When he's on his game, he's a good player.

Jim, it was a beautiful game to watch, but Herzlich was the author of few WTF moments! That could have turned the game around at that point.

I forgot about the call on the Niles Paul hit...
Shockeyisthebest80 : 9/26/2014 1:23 am : link
can they stop calling penalties just because people are hit hard? He had the ball... how the fuck was he defenseless? The only reason he got hit in the head was because he ducked.

That guy got killed tonight. Actually felt bad for him. First he took a big hit to the knee/leg only to come back to get concussed.
Just got back from the game.

It only makes QBs look really good if they are smart enough and quick-thinking enough to take advantage of what the defense is giving them. It wouldn't be a good system for a QB like Kerry Collins.

was at the game at the club level. definitely refs are very, very bad. terrible call on the paul hit - a wr ducks his head down and gets hit hard and it's a penalty; he was certainly not defenseless. and then he's down by contact - huh-how is that possible when goes down to make the catch - just stupid, weird calls. and two giants get hit late and/or hit in the helment and no call - weird! and the non-td for randle was laughable; you need to make a football move in the endzone - really? guess you can fumble in the endzone - refs are a joke. but yep, hard to think we'll get 6 to's per game. and enjoy watching the giants the rest of the season. I'm very tempted after tnite, but will stay with my boycott of watching nfl games after the rice debacle :-). just went tnite since a friend invited me weeks ago and didn't want to be rude. go giants in spirit :) (will just follow on smartphone and highlights - smile!).
Eli is Eli again
bigblueheadache : 9/26/2014 3:52 am : link
I was one of those Eli skeptics, but he has really returned to form with a new interior of the offensive line, the emergence of Donnell, and an offensive coordinator who puts him into high percentage situations. But let's be honest: he hasn't played this well in a couple of years. It was right to have doubts and ask questions about whether age and playing behind some bad lines had permanently tarnished his ability. The Giants had to have their own doubts about him. As a Giants fan, I'm glad he still has plenty left in the tank. My greatest concern was that the team would peak after he had, but right now I think the team looks good enough to compete in the NFC East, and then maybe Eli gets hot down the stretch. It was great to watch, and as always I'll be rooting for him.
Eli will be fine

get em' all healthy, maybe get Beckham out there, get Beason ready (Herz won't cut it) and prepare to slug this NFCE out! Last night's win was MASSIVE!
I was dead wrong about this team
MarshallOnMontana : 9/26/2014 7:50 am : link
I had 4 to 5 win expectations, and its nice to envision having a season on our hands. This makes me retroactively much more pissed about the arizona game which we straight up blew. Should be 3-1 right now.

as always it comes down to turnovers. Winning the battle as decisively as we did last night virtually guarantees victory. Defense has been making a ton of plays the last couple weeks, hope it keeps up. We do have a lot of guys in that secondary with above average ball skills.

Eli was awesome last night. He has strung together 3 very solid games now and played one of his better career games in general last night. Only interception was terrible luck. Was it just me or did he also look bizarrely happy at several points last night, downright cheesing that rivaled any emotion displayed certainly in a regular season game. Looks like a guy who hasnt had a lot of fun playing football in a while and all of that was pent up ready to burst

donnell is a monster. 4 games in, ive seen enough to say we have ourselves a mainstay at that position for years

this was one of the more satisfying wins in washington ever, just ridiculously dominant
Excellent win.

Stunning!!!! What a turnaround.
Victor in CT : 9/26/2014 8:22 am : link
Glad for Eli. My only worry about him was that they would get him killed. Keep him standing and he makes journeyman receivers look good.

J. Williams sucks too. Another "great athlete" who can't make plays. He can't tackle. ANother special teamer.

How good this offense can be with a Legit deep threat namely Odell Beckham ? We may see a lot of Salsa before the season ends.
Dumb question
Bill L : 9/26/2014 8:33 am : link
all the stories I've read have the Giants passing for 295 yards last night and also have Eli passing for 300 yards.

Since Eli made all the passes, can someone explain the math to me?
That was pretty damn impressive
RB^2 : 9/26/2014 8:34 am : link
It's really interesting to watch a completely new offense. It looks like Eli's not getting killed nearly as much as he used to in the pocket. I'm guessing this will help extend his prime and his career.

Sacks count against team passing stats, so Eli must have gotten sacked for 5 yards at some point, though I don't remember any specific plays.

Kerrigan sacked him for a five yard loss at the end of the first half, a couple plays before the sideline strike to Cruz that set up the field goal.

looking unusually giddy last night. I said the same thing as I was watching.

And these last 2 games should prove that changing the offense was essential for this team's immediate future. No knock on KG but this is such a fun offense to watch and Eli looks like a different QB in it.

As I said last night in a game thread.... I was 100% wrong about this team. I do not understand how a team can simply look this different in such a short time but I am now a believer.
