He said he was told a few years ago by the Giants to "watch this guy Donnell." Apparently the Giants were not as desperate to find a TE as others have been..I would assume that his blocking will continue to be a work in progress..
Donnell, I don't think anyone would have predicted he's come through like this. I know he was someone that's been someone to watch out for, but to get these kind of results so far is astonishing.
He was drafted in 2012 and spent two years on the practice squad.
Only one year on the PS, his rookie year. He was active for all sixteen games in 2013, but the foot injury he suffered in the summer set him back quite a bit. He mostly played special teams.
although after game was well in hand thought he may have gator armed a pass.
he's no secret now, he is going to have to continue to work on his blocking but also catch passes over the middle and get down quickly to protect himself.

No doubt, but the DCs will now have to gameplan for him, which opens things up for Cruz and Randle..
Too big for DBs, too fast with too good ball skills for LBs. He actually looks thin to me with a big frame. I can see him continuing to put muscle on too.
Donnell spent 12 on the practice squad. So, this will be his 2nd credited year. I think think this means he will be an exclusive rights free agent after this year and a restricted free agent after next year. So, he will be a Giant next year. The year after, the giants will need to tender him at a given level and then will get the right to match any other offer.

and we all know Pro Day's exaggerate, so we're talking about a guy with almost 5.0 speed in the 40.
Yet he is somehow getting open with ease and his lack of speed isn't as big of a deal in the red zone where his size and ball skills become a real weapon for us.

But credit has to be given to Eli and not just Pope(before he left) for the play of Boss, Ballard, Bennett and now Donnell(so far)..Can't just be coincidence imv
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Robinson is faster than that
That the vast majority of Jermichael Finley's TD receptions came in the red zone. Seems like McAdoo's trying to turn Donnell into a Finley clone...which is fine with me.
he is a good athlete with good feet. Just watched last game and this game. You will see his stutter step against the corners to get free when is wide. His release is also pretty good. He also have good strong hands. Just need to keep his feet more after the catch. Think we have a live one here.

although he isn't a burner, I was pretty surprised that he only timed in at 4.91 at the 40yd dash. That's almost Offensive Tackle speed in the NFL. But he looks much quicker than that.
Eli was able to complete big plays with Jake Ballard here, so I don't think Donnell's lack of speed is going to keep him and Eli from connecting down the field. But I do think his lack of speed will limit him to a degree, but as long as he continues making big 3rd down catches and being a force in the RZ it won't matter.
was let go was donnell and robinson's lack of development. he really went to bat for both of them. looks like donnell arrived a little late for coach pope but he was right all along
what is interesting about donnell is his blocking is improving. he's gone from being a complete liability to not really noticing he's out there on blocking plays which is good progress
imo, had more to do with a new OC, who wanted experienced coaches coaching the WCO and had a connection to him. Giants turned over half the Offensive coaching staff. I believe it was negotiated that Macadoo would come in and be able to pick a few coaches to come in with him. That experience in the new system was nec to implement.
Love me some Donnell. Great hands. big, great ups. and goes and gets the ball
In the red zone, but third downs as well. The last time a TE was counted on that much on pivotal plays was when we had Bavaro. And I'm not comparing the 2 players, but so far this season, he's been the go to guy when we need to move the chains or get in the end zone.
Pope et al praised Robinson and others. Praising in public is one thing and is fine, praising a guy "off the record" to people associated with the game is something else..That usually carries more weight, at least to people who understand football, which you clearly don't.
First, they run in shorts. Let's see how fast they run with football equipment on. Second of all, quickness and agility really are the key. Donnell shows quickness and agility.
and certainly the right size for a TE. He had that one bonehead out of the back of the end zone play but flash to me even prior to this year. His play is no longer flashing though; it is all bright lights now!
I agree with Fred...small schools and combine numbers

You're pretty grumpy for a guy who should be reveling in the fact that his infinite patience and faith in the regime has led to a 2-2 start.
If you paid attention you would have realized that the Giants were high on Donnell without having to have heard it from Polian.
BTW, is this his 2nd or 3rd year in the NFL?
Is he a FA after this season?
Thanks Acid

un-drafted FA signed in 2012

Donnell is 6'5-6'6 260

First TD was Riley. Second was Meriweather. Third was a rookie CB whose name escapes me.
Even better..Optimus?

Same with Jake Ballard.

You can't spell Elite without Eli+TE.
I see what you did there

He could not get inside leverage and still keep his responsibility.
The Safety (Clark?) got caught peeking to the trips side. He's the one who goofed.
They cannot borrow from their agents to pay for the speed camps before the combine, as the post-draft payout is nowhere near a sure thing.
