I'd like them to target Betts.
Ira : 9/28/2014 10:16 am : link
He's a good hitter, has speed and a little pop. He walks a lot, too. I think he'd be a good lead off hitter - which we can certainly use. And, he's probably available.
I'm not worried about the Mets trying to pry Stanton..
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 10:21 am : link
Because they wouldn't be willing to give them the 300M deal that goes along with it but I agree that in the end, the cost probably outweighs the value.

Cuddyer isn't a bad player I just don't think he's enough of an upgrade. A Cuddyer/Lagares/Granderson OF likely doesn't even give you one 20 HR player. Maybe it doesn't matter but I think we really need one more guy with 30 HR pop.
give him*

Why would you think it wouldn't give you ONE 20 home run player when Granderson hit 20 this year taking 2 whole months off? I want a 30 home run bat in LF too but where is this guy? Im not seeing him. There aren't many left in baseball period. What is Duda? Third in home runs with 29? The power guys are gone. 20 is the new 30. lol And Cuddyer is about as good as your gonna find assuming he stays healthy. He can hit 20 too.
I do get the sense though
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 10:59 am : link
that the rebuild is over and Sandy is going to be blowing up the phones this offseason. We already know he was checking in on Tulo and Cargo like crazy at the trade deadline and even told them to MAKE SURE they called the Mets before they traded either.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he pulled off a blockbuster or two. We have a lot of excess parts as well that could help teams. We'll see. Im excited. Hell, if didn't do a single thing I think we are a wild card team with Harvey back.

actually had Conforto in the majors in 2015, I think he expected him to play A ball this year though, and make it to AA kind of quickly in 2015 and get called up in Sep.

if that's true though, you're looking at a 1-year bridge to get your LF.

Assuming of course Conforto pans out. I think based on where he started the Super two date in 2016 is more likely than September roster expansion 2015, but in either case you don't even need two full seasons hopefully.

I don't know why you keep just discounting Grandersons bad months.
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 11:00 am : link
They were part of his season and the player he is. He's streaky. When he's good, he's really good.. when he's bad, he's really, really bad.

I don't think he's going to be any better next year.

Cuddyer won't be a 20 HR guy here, either.

I'd take a shot on Tomas. He could be the 30 HR guy. But I know we'll pass and watch him do it with someone else while we get nothing more than an average year out of Cuddyer.
Well regarding Granderson
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 11:08 am : link
he still hit 20! Im thinking he'll bounce back a little next year now that he's comfortable and batting a little lower in the order. He also missed almost all of last year so Im thinking that led to his slow start in April.

There is seriously like a 1 percent chance Tomas hits 30 home runs in MLB next year. Just because Abreu and Puig ended up being stars doesn't mean every player in Cuba can come here and take over the league. As I said, I'd role the dice with him but you are completely wishing upon the stars that it works out. Id be thrilled if he hit .220 with 20 home runs in his first season actually and I'd still have doubts he could even do that.

Yeah and remember Nimmo is going to start in AAA most likely and will be here even sooner than that if does well in Vegas. We have players coming.
Cuddyer has been

an 800/900 OPS player the last 5 years. Ill gladly take his average year in LF.

Please show me any type of proof that Sandy was checking in on Tulo and Cargo "like crazy" at the deadline. I don't recall reading that at all. Are you in Sandy's office when he makes these "calls?"

And Granderson played the last two months of the season in 2013 so I don't know why that would be an excuse for his atrocious start during this season. Outside of two months, he was epically bad this year. Nice to see him turn it up in "garbage time September" though.
A 1% chance Tomas can hit 30 HR's in the majors?
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 11:43 am : link
LOL.. yeah, I'm sure none of these teams that have interest know that.

Quote:
A righthanded-hitting corner outfielder, Tomas can hit towering home runs thanks to the strength from his thickly-built 6-foot-1, 230-pound frame. Tomas has 70 raw power on the 20-80 scale, and with Jose Abreu already gone, the only player still in Cuba with more raw power than him was Alfredo Despaigne. He has some experience in center field and is a decent runner for his size, but his speed is still below-average and he’s going to be a corner outfielder in pro ball.

Yeah, sure sounds like a "1%" chance...
Tomas is also 23 years old.
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 11:44 am : link
Cuddyer is 35.

The Mets need a cornerstone middle of the order bat
chris r : 9/28/2014 11:52 am : link
you can't not go after that because you drafted 2 outfielders in the first round recently.

The plan should be to add a middle of the order cornerstone bat and let Granderson hold down the other corner stop until Nimmo or Conforto are ready. If both are good, you deal with it. Having too much talent is never a negative.
Dude your still living in 2006.
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 11:59 am : link
You act like its nothing for a complete unknown out of Cuba who almost everyone agrees is not the caliber of talent Puig and Abreu are to come in and hit 30 home runs year one at 23. lol

I will say it again. DUDA IS THIRD IN HOMERUNS IN OUR ENTIRE LEAGE AT 29!!
and to be clear
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:01 pm : link
Ive said Id sign Tomas before anyone on this board even knew who he was. But to act like its an automatic he's gonna come in and hit 30 home runs year one is asinine.
Cool story..
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 12:03 pm : link
We need more power than just Lucas Duda.

How am I living in 2006? Sorry, but I don't think Cuddyer is making this lineup good enough to contend. I know you just assume best case scenario for every single player but it doesn't work that way. There will be guys who have really good years but there will also be guys who get hurt and guys who underperform.

You can't go into 2014 assuming Matt Harvey will be a CY candidate again, assuming deGrom will pitch to a 2 ERA, Duda will hit 30+, Wright will be healthy, Granderson will be better, d'Arnaud will hit .280 with 20 HR's, etc..

I know you think all of those things will just happen but I can promise you they won't and if we don't improve the lineup more, we aren't going to make the playoffs.
And even though I would
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:04 pm : link
certainly take Tomas over Cuddyer, I am ready to compete next year. Tomas is a lottery ticket. Cuddyer gives us production immediately.
As asinine as giving it a 1% chance?
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 12:05 pm : link
The dude has a ton of raw power. Jose Abreu just came in here and led the majors in slugging and hit 36 out in year one. Tomas doesn't have to be Abreu and why are you so focused on "year one" ? He's 23. He can keep getting better and hasn't hit his ceiling. Cuddyer is old. He's not going to be an .800-.900 OPS player here. I would bet a lot on that.
I am expecting everything to just work out?
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:11 pm : link
This from a guy wanting to go all in on Tomas??

Arc its strength in numbers. Its a calculated gamble. Going into last year we had Thor, Montero, and deGrom all close. It was a reasonable assumption with their stuff one would emerge. One did. Its the same thing going into next year. Will Harvey be Harevy day one? I don't know. But I do know we will have one of the best rotations in baseball period. Thats not banking on Harvey. I never put my eggs in any one players basket. Thats banking on Harvey, Wheeler, deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Montero, Gee, Neise, and Colon. Will will have a spectacular 5 out of that. We will have an exciting young bullpen. We already do and we aren't banking on one person again. 4 guys could close. TDA, Duda, Lagares, and even Flores are no longer unknowns. We have improved mightily as this season has progressed. We only need one more bat. Cuddyer would be a solid add.

That is a one of the most ridiculous things that has happened in baseball in years and because Abreu did it everyone now will? It is asinine to expect 30 home runs in his first full season. And yeah maybe he could develop over time but I said 1 percent chance next year and Im ready to compete NEXT year. Like Ive said a million times, I'd sign Tomas but if you think you are just plugging in a 30 home run bat because of a scouting report in Cuba you are on drugs.
And what does Duda have to do with anything?
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:17 pm : link
Im just pointing out how few 30 home run players are left in the world period.
Actually think about how silly that sounds
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:20 pm : link
you are saying we need more power than Duda right? There are two players in our league that hit more home runs then Duda this year and only two that hit 30. So in order to compete we need two out of three guys in the whole league at that caliber?
And raw power doesn't mean much.
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:24 pm : link
if you can't hit the baseball. Id feel a lot more confident if there wasn't so many conflicting reports about his bat speed and overall hit tool out there.

Ok, if you're signing Tomas you're not signing him for 1 year.
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 12:39 pm : link
So why are you so focused on just next year?

And there were a billion knocks on Puig's "bat speed", too. And all sorts of reports that said he would be good but not special.

30 is just a random number.. the guy doesn't have to hit 30+ but we could really use another guy with at least 20's power and I seriously do not think Cuddyer will do that here.

I didn't say we need more power than Duda. I said we need to supplement his bat with another power bat. You're twisting what I am saying.
And as much as I love what Duda did this year..
arcarsenal : 9/28/2014 12:41 pm : link
He's not a lock to do it again next year. We need to safeguard ourselves a little.

Sure, if every guy stays healthy and no one declines and everyone either stays the same or improves, we'll be in great shape. That's also not remotely realistic.

I understand that reading is a fundamental basic function that gets lost on you, but (as I w-r-o-t-e) please point out where in that article it states that the Mets were targeting Tulo and Cargo "like crazy." I'll sit here with breathless anticipation.

Just because a GM says "keep me posted if you make this player available" doesn't mean that they are on the phone with the Rockies every day.

So dumb.
I just want a good player
ZGiants98 : 9/28/2014 12:46 pm : link
Conforto was arguably the best bat in the whole draft and is also expected to be a 20 home run bat. He's going to be here soon. I want to compete next year and Cuddyer could bridge the gap to Conforto. I just don't see many options out there. Im agreeing with what your saying and would love to add some one better but I just don't see how realistic that is. And I do think we'll have enough to compete next year regardless. Our pitching will be just too damn good. The Giants have been winning WS plugging in guys like Cuddyer for years now.
