Stone hands Andre Williams

Free Agent : 9/26/2014 5:39 pm
Has been running hard and I think he's going turn out to be a great signing. Must improve his pass catching though! "We knew this when we drafted him" I think we have thrown to him 3 times so far this year and he has caught it once.. Both times he didn't catch the ball Eli put it right in his stone hands... I saw how frustrated he was yesterday with dropping the pass but I'm confidant we will get this aspect of his game improved... Giants Pride!!!

Jennings doesn't look like a reliable receiver out of the backfield, either.
Iirc, Jacobs didn't have the softest

hands either when he became a pro..We'll see what repeated reps will ultimately do
Williams is living up to his pre-draft analysis...

WEAKNESSES: Big bodied and will struggle to make himself skinny through holes, slowing down at first contact and appearing hesitant at times at the LOS...lacks dynamic quickness to start/stop and get himself out of trouble on athleticism alone...has speed to break off big runs, but needs a few steps to get going...would like to see him break more tackles with his power...worn down late in games and overall durability is a question mark, toughing out several injuries in 2013...inconsistent awareness in pass protection and blitz pick-up...questionable ability as a pass catcher (10 career catches, none in 2013).

This fits him to a tee...

Jennings is a really good receiver
robbieballs2003 : 9/26/2014 5:46 pm : link
He dropped one ball.

I'm just glad Williams stopped the spin shit in the backfield. He is getting better every week.
He's just not really talented at catching the football.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/26/2014 5:48 pm : link
Brandon Jacobs had a long, enjoyable career despite the same issue.

If you look at the pass he dropped
Peter from CT : 9/26/2014 5:51 pm : link
It just looks like he is thinking too much. He made the chip block and then squeezed out to be open. And then the ball was on him. Thinking too much. Game will slow down and he will make that catch.
He can improve in that

area. Wasn't asked to do it in college. Coach him up
Maybe ODB

can show him how to use the Juggs machine!
What was curz's
ctc in ftmyers : 9/26/2014 6:25 pm : link
excuse on the dropped ball when he was wide open that ended the first drive? What was that? A four yard pass? When the hell he he going to learn how to catch the ball?

Me thinks you too hard on a rookie that we know was going to take time to learn how to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Am I the only one who thinks...
kinard : 9/26/2014 6:42 pm : link
... Peyton Hillis - who can block, run and catch - should be the primary back-up to Jennings at this point?

I like Williams, but I just think right now Hillis is the more complete running back.
He's no Madison hedgecock

4 pro games and and not a receiving threat! What a bust
Marty in Albany : 9/26/2014 6:58 pm : link
in the head you are if you thought that he would learn to catch in his first year.
Hillis
Tim in Eternal Blue : 9/26/2014 7:04 pm : link
Is too slow. I'll take Williams all day in the backup role. Much higher ceiling.
I think Hillis is a fantastic back to have fresh late in a game
glowrider : 9/26/2014 7:09 pm : link
I think the depth chart is correct considering they're high on Williams. I think we have a very nice rotation so far in the backfield. Jennings is awesome. Williams reminds me of Bradshaw as a rookie and by name alone you have to have Hillis in the backfield. Only time Eli hands the ball to Peyton.
Andre Williams
Steve in South Jersey : 9/26/2014 7:13 pm : link
his role will grow. As long as he can pick up the blitz and block, I don't care so much about him not being a pass target. I think he will be a very good running back.
He will get better at the receiving
JFIB : 9/26/2014 7:15 pm : link
But his pass protection has been good and is improving. He stood up Kerrigan on Eli's touchdown run. It was the block that really made that play possible.
I still think we are dangerously thin at RB
SHO'NUFF : 9/26/2014 7:15 pm : link
we still need a speedy shifty pass-catcher in the backfield.
15 carries 66 yards 1 TD

in his fourth career game and people are calling for him to be buried on the bench behind Hillis?

Williams looked MUCH better last night, for anyone that was paying attention. Can we show a bit of patience just one time on this site? You guys are unbelievable

Yes, you are the only one.

He is insurance on the bench in case Jennings gets hurt. Williams is the future. He's the #2 and still would be if Jennings went down. People get way to spastic over the depth chart.IMHO

This
he can't catch
bluepepper : 9/26/2014 7:21 pm : link
One of the reports someone posted here after the draft had a scout saying he was hopeless. Seeing him so far this year, I fear he was right. Also have been unimpressed with his running. Looked good in pre-season but except for the one good run last night, he looks like he plows straight ahead no matter what. Little vision or footwork. Agree with Kinard in that I'd rather see Hillis or even Cox as #2 guy at least for now.
As a below average athlete
Mark from Jersey : 9/26/2014 7:37 pm : link
in high school and later I cannot understand how someone cannot catch. I could catch anything thrown at me in football...problem was I would get caught too quickly..lol.

Even baseball, I played 3rd because I could react quickly and get the ball in my glove and then where it needed to be.

Catching seems so easy at any level...I just don't understand why some professional athletes can't do it.
Williams is said to have small hands
Steve in South Jersey : 9/26/2014 7:42 pm : link
he had 2 hands on the football last night in traffic. He looks pretty good picking up blitz and blocking for a rookie. I think someone who can run like him was a steal in the 4th round.

Yup
Sounds like
ctc in ftmyers : 9/26/2014 7:54 pm : link
a Coughlin mandate.

"he had 2 hands on the football last night in traffic."

Actually, I was impressed how he was holding it "high and tight" last night much more than 2 handed as in the previous 3 games.

He seemed a lot looser to me last night.
135 career receptions for Jennings
Rob in NYC : 9/26/2014 7:57 pm : link
And we are comfortable making these statements about his receiving abilities?
Mark,
blue42 : 9/26/2014 8:04 pm : link
your level of competition was a tad lower....but it's great you caught the ball.

Give the guy a few games. Why not talk about Williams trucking a Redskin DB in the 4th. A hit that got the crowd to groan.

That's more important.
Um, Mark...

Ever stop to think that this meant that the vast majority of players on your team COULDN'T react quickly and get the ball in their glove? So that the fact that you could do it DIDN'T make it a universal skill that all good athletes are expected to have?
He can catch. He is a professional athlete
Jimmy Googs : 9/26/2014 9:49 pm : link
That if he works toward a goal will improve. I am shocked at how he could possibly reach this level of the sport and be so deficient at it, but alas that is where he is.

Get a guy to throw and catch 100 balls a night going to his left and his right and learn. It's that simple and that hard all in one.

If anyway else knows a better solution lets have it.

Darren in TR : 9/26/2014 9:59 pm : link
had some impressive runs and put solid hits on defenders, that's exactly what he was drafted for. He's going to get better as the season progresses.
Enough with Peyton Hillis.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/26/2014 10:09 pm : link
The jig is up.
Andre Williams package will grow
giantgiantfan : 9/26/2014 10:51 pm : link
It will start small, but extend as the season intensifies. This is obvious to anyone, including Eli.
Blocking much better in pass protection
Rick in Dallas : 9/27/2014 3:00 am : link
That is the big improvement in 4 games with AW. I think he is going to be the steal in draft for the GMEN. He can improve his pass catching skills and runs hard and low..I like that in a RB.

Hillis over Williams?
blueblood'11 : 9/27/2014 8:19 am : link
Are you kidding. Williams was a Heisman finalist. And is every bit the runner Hillis is. He will get better at protection the more he plays and is like a tank with speed coming though the line. That's not to put Hillis down. He is a nice insurance policy to have and at some point I can see the Giants using all three backs to some degree in games to wear defenses down. The Giants didn't draft this kid to have sit behind Hillis who at this point is a journeyman running back. Albeit one who appears to have a lot left in the tank.
No one expected Andre Williams to look like Roger Craig.
Klaatu : 9/27/2014 11:21 am : link
That's not why the Giants drafted him. He's always going to be an adventure as a receiver because it just doesn't come natural to him, and I don't think he'd get much better if he caught a thousand balls a day in practice.

However, it was his block on Ryan Kerrigan that allowed Eli to run in for a touchdown last Thursday, and that showed me something. He's a punishing runner with deceptive speed, and if he becomes a dependable pass-protector I can forgive his lack of pass-catching skill.
