STRENGTHS John is a big, strong offensive tackle with good feet and balance. He uses excellent techniques when pass blocking and has the athletic talent to mirror his man when pass blocking. John is smart, knows his blocking assignments and plays with the efficiency that is sometimes misrepresented as a lack of passion. He has strong mental stamina and rarely gets beat when pass blocking. When he needs to move laterally to make a block (run or pass) and does get beat, he recovers very well by using proper techniques and his surprising athletic talent. I suspect that for John the game is too easy for him at this level. That true challenge to bring out all of his talents will be at the next level. NEEDS TO IMPROVE John has one issue above all that must be addressed. He has a weight problem and if he can get that under control, I believe that John could be a Pro Bowl left tackle for the team that drafts him. Too much weight will affect what side of the ball John will play on for the team that drafts him. BOTTOM LINE The way John plays on the field is very deceiving. He has excellent athletic talent and when someone challenges him, that athletic talent comes out. If John is not challenged, he tends to be a bit lazy and will just go with the flow and block his man as needed. Some players have so much talent and at the same time are so smart that they know that they will not have any problems with coaches as long as they produce when it is needed for them to produce. John stays under the radar in all phases of the game by just producing what is needed when it is needed. If you draft John and tell him "I'm expect you to become my left tackle," I believe John will become a Pro Bowl left tackle. If you draft John and tell him you are going to be my right tackle and don't worry I'll make sure on passing downs we cover you up with a tight end... he will be your right tackle who needs help on passing downs. If you challenge this kid to be the best that he can be and recognize his talent so that he respect you as a coach, you will see a very good player rising out of the ashes of that lackadaisical attitude that he plays with now. Make him lose the weight and give him some responsibility -- I know this kid will not fail. If he does, you still have a hell of a right tackle; therefore, you have nothing to lose and every thing to gain. I'm not sure what round John might be drafted in, but I will say this: if John does well at his workouts and loses some weight, he could surprise a lot of people on where he is drafted. He could sneak into the end of the first round! |

There'as a possibillity he left that jerkoff environment and maybe some NY and some character rub off on him,but I wouldn't bet on it. Meanwhile he's been serviceable.
If my arm was twisted I'd have to say he was a good pickup.
Yeah, we're going to want Schwartz when SF and Seattle come calling
it's almost funny, because when we HAD noone else to start, and he was still injured, he got better quick, came in, played, and is at a passable level now and rising. It's got a lot to do with his attitude.he seems to have some ability he is content to be all shade tree about if he can get away with it. he fit right in here in Florida.I don't ,mean that in a good way.Maybe he can fit in here as well.
Just read an interesting stat, the 2 guards, Jerry and Richburg played more snaps than anyone else yesterday.
81. That's a lot of football for one game.I bet a lot of guys have productive careers and are never in for 81 snaps. Just saying, it's a lot of work.

That snap count is because on the last drive backups came in at LT, RT, and C. Jerry is solid and has gelled with the current group, but is very much league average and hopefully upgraded with Schwartz later this year.
You know I had been begging for JR to upgrade the OL through the draft for years, since the year they drafted Beatty at least. And Jerry was one of those guys I wanted JR to draft. As I noted on another thread, based on the OL's current play, I wouldn't look to replace ANY of the current starters, healthy Schwartz or not.
Who knows how accurate Boylehardt's college take on Jerry was vs Beatty re personality? Both guys have a ton of native talent, but if you look at their bodies only Beatty has spent the time in the training room to make himself an NFL body. Or maybe it's a matter of discipline, as Jerry is still a fat mother....
You may be onto something that Jerry might be our best backup OT, but right now why move him from OG?
Consistency is his only issue - he can play
A holding penalty waiting to happen.
He doesn't move his feet so he's reaching too often.
And Schwartz did not look good at all in pre-season as already noted. Anyone hanging their hats on Schwartz as a savior will be disappointed.
Any Oline changes barring injury will be considered at next years camp.

Care to wager? $25 donation to Eric that assuming both Schwartz and Jerry are healthy, Jerry sits at some point?
As for his character, well, I don't know the guy and I didn't read much about what went on in Miami, but Mom always that "Your friends can make you or break you," so, maybe hanging around with Incognito brought out the schmuck in him, and a change of scenery (and new friends, straight-arrows like Beatty, Richburg and Pugh) will do him good.
re: character - outside of the bully stuff, don't know if there is more evidence re: that. he along with another two idiots bullied a player who continued to hang around with his tormentors. not justifying it - but at some point you're a 300 OL who is getting tormented - nothing like a good punch in teh mouth to let people know you've had enough. in other words, stick up for yourself.
You are correct, but I think Richburg has demonstrated he is one of the top 5 OL on the team at this point...
More importantly, he displayed a level of performance for a period of time in KC that Jerry never has. If we are indicting players on offense because of the preseason performance, the list is much longer than Schwartz...
To date, he is an upgrade over Snee's last couple of years and the boothe analogy is not a bad one (though different body types and strengths/weakenesses) in that I feel fully confident with him in there if needed. Obviously we paid Schwartz big money and when he's ready should be out there.
Jerry is a solid player... Schwartz is better than a solid player. He was considered the top guard in free agency. He wasn't great in preseason... because the OL had yet to gel and he was playing on the left side, somewhere he hasn't played the majority of his career.

player who will be replaced the nanosecond anyone better is healthy.
Is he a low character guy across the board, or is he just plain mean? Aside from the hazing incidents with Miami, does he have a history of criminal behavior or a poor work ethic? If he's just a big old meanie, that can be a good thing in an OL, considering all the big meanies that line up across from them. You don't necessarily want five alter boys lining up from left to right no matter how smart and athletic they are.
Max McGee supposedly said, "when it's third and ten, you take the milk drinkers and give me the whiskey drinkers anytime."
DOn't know why that sprung to mind, but it seemed relevant.
Hopefully the GIants will look to put Schwartz in at RG and Jerry on the bench, but that may not happen still for another 5 weeks or so and even then, Schwartz has not been practicing, has to get back into game shape, learn the RG schemes and then we may see him. By that time, there may only be like 5-6 weeks of the season left. I guess it's a good situation to be in non-the-less.
Sure Schwartz would replace him if he's not doing well. I seriously doubt Schwartz will take Jerry's starting job if he's playing well. Schwartz is not David Diehl.

his character is shade tree;, he does enough to get by, bare minimum.Lazy and shiftless, at least before he got to NY.If he gave some effort is possible he's more than a JAG.
Guy is 6-5 and 340, so yeah, I guess he is.
I've seen some older reviews of Jerry that pretty much said that too. If anyone can motivate Jerry, it's future HOF coach Coughlin.
Sometimes when a guy has the goods and witholds, he's due for some harsh analysis.
