Schefter: Ndamukong Suh Wants to Play for the Giants

CromartiesKid21 : 9/28/2014 11:11 am
Quote:
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions and impending free agent DT Ndamukong Suh are heading for a split.
Suh is essentially in the final year of his rookie contract as 2015 is a voidable year. PFF's No. 2 NT/DT in 2013 and No. 4 in 2012 is prepared to move on and is going to break the bank on the open market. Schefter says Suh would like to play for the Giants or Jets to help build his brand in New York, although the Cowboys and Bears are also expected to have interest.

Our defense would be immediately better with Suh. I love the way he brings the pain and nasty attitude to every game. He's obviously a great player but the attitude would be a welcome addition to our defense which, even when it plays at a high level, never seems to frighten any offenses. I don't know about the cap and all that, but I'd love to have his ability and attitude on our team.

I have no idea how are cap space is looking next year or whether he would fit in alongside Hankins, but if you add him to the DL and the secondary indeed plays up to the potential you might have the makings of a pretty good defense.

Lets just see how this season plays out.

sjnyfan : 9/28/2014 11:22 am : link
With the Jets playing Detroit today, this is probably why it became a small story but I wouldn't rule out the Giants. I thought getting DRC from the Jets was a pipedream. We made that happen and with some certain contract changes and restructuring in the offseason, not to mention a huge jump to the salary cap over the next few years this could happen too. Say what you want about his reputation but I think he's maturing and you can't deny the talent. He's one of four NFL players under RocNation. One is Geno Smith but one of the others is Victor Cruz (the fourth is Hakeem Nicks, btw). I'm sure there will be conversations, if there haven't been already back in week 1

don't need Suh on their DL. They are going to need to upgrade their secondary and perhaps add another LB.

I could see the Cowboys making a bid considering their sketchy defense, but their precarious cap situation would just bury them further down the road.

Bears make some sense. I don't see the Giants giving up such a huge deal. I think we will see us make a few moderate signings if any at all this coming offseason, perhaps another OL, S and maybe some depth additions.

robbieballs2003 : 9/28/2014 11:27 am : link
Why? I don't want that fuck anywhere near this team. Take out the fact he is an idiot and selfish player, why would you want to handcuff our cap space on a DT? Are our DTs not playing well? Yes, he is a talent but not a guy you give out a crazy contract to. Why would we let Linval go for a team friendly price tag when we know what he can do on this team, in this system and with these player/coaches to give Suh a monster contract with all these variables?
We have to pay Rolle and Donell this offseason this offseason,
Great White Ghost : 9/28/2014 11:27 am : link
Probably Manning as well, for the simple reason that if we want to keep him we have a shitload of contracts that come up in 2016 and that just won't be a good time to write him a new one.

Does Suh have any character issues besides being greedy? Also is it hypocritical to say we think Cruz was supposed to resign because of endorsements and branding opportunities available in NY, but not when it comes to another player who wants to do the same?My concern is what kind of person is he? A known douche, or no?
No chance. To many FA dollars.
BillT : 9/28/2014 11:28 am : link
With the JPP, Prince resignings as well as possibly Eli (though that would probably save money for the 1st year). You have to look 2,3,4 years down the road. Not realistic cap wise.

It would be difficult. Giants have to extend Rolle, sign JPP and possibly extend Eli this offseason (although JPP and Eli are still under contract in 2015). That being said, creating a new Bank of Eli where he takes a big pay cut in 2015 and gets paid handsomely from 2016-2018 to add a lot of cap room is possible

Not a lot of guys on that defensive list we should worry about bringing back. If OBJ looks to be a player on O than we should be focusing on the D in the draft. Safety and LB being our biggest needs. Such would be a great addition but I believe the cap money needs to be spent elsewhere.

illmatic : 9/28/2014 11:51 am : link
I love Rolle as much as the next guy here, he's a great player and a great leader. But you don't break the bank trying to re-sign a 32 going on 33 year old safety and miss out on a stud DT in his prime because of it. You build for now and the future. You might get one or two more good years out of Rolle before the decline hits. You'll get at least four great years out of Suh unless major injuries hit, but you can't plan for that.

I thought the Giants were in pretty good cap shape next year too. They should have enough money to get JPP, Eli, one of Rolle/Prince locked away and then I don't see why they wouldn't have money for Suh too unless he asks for the moon. But if he wants a ton of money, this is silly to talk about in the first place. He's going to get paid big time but if it's at least somewhat reasonable and works under the cap, you go for it. You might have to let Prince walk but you draft some combination of CB/DE/S/LB and let that defense rock and roll. JPP/Suh/Hankins/Moore would be an amazing young DL.
Make it so.

Keep in mind that if we sign Suh, Jenkins is getting cut which would save over $2 million in cap space. No way the Giants are paying Kiwi $7.5 million so that's more saved money. Eli and Prince will get extended which will save a ton of space. Plus there's no guarantee we keep both Beason AND McClain considering age, injury risk and salary. If we want Suh we can do it with cap space to spare.
Yup
illmatic : 9/28/2014 12:00 pm : link
It's easy to get creative with the cap to make things work. As long as it's not an insane contract that would crush them down the road, they can work something out. The issue is how much money teams with a ton of cap space will throw at him. Does he really want to win in a big city or does he want the biggest contract possible. I guess we'll see. It's fun to think about though.

Suh will get between 16 and 20 million per. I'd rather purchase 2 $10M star players- thank you very much. I'm glad the Giants would never consider Suh at that price.

If JPP has a good year, we'll be shelling out enough cap already.

I'm still trying to figure out at what point did fans start caring about this "character player" bullshit. If a player can help you win games and doesn't have any pending criminal charges then thats a guy you have to look at.

That being said, the Giants have already invested into that position through the draft and it looks like we may not have that much of a need atDT for the moment. If the Giants are going to break the bank on a position thats probably not the one they should be targeting.
I believe Donnell is only in his second credited year.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/28/2014 2:02 pm : link
He spent most of 2012 on the practice squad, so I'm pretty sure he'll be an ERFA in 2015, with very little leverage in contact negotiations.

Rolle is a trickier question. At this stage of his career, the best option is to pay hiim well, but without a lot of guarantees.

Will the Giants be able to outbid the rest of the league for him? Almost certainly not.

Might he take a smaller deal to play in New York? Maybe, but in that event, the Jets will probably still be able to offer more. Also, his agent and financial advisor will remind him that New Jersey's taxes are significantly higher than the taxes in, say, Florida. Any NY discount probably isn't going to be very big.

Matt M. : 9/28/2014 5:19 pm : link

Everything you say is right. It's also word for word what was said about DRC.
If he wants to play in NY so badly..
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 9/28/2014 7:45 pm : link
to build his "brand"...then lets see him do it for $2mm per year.
Don't forget we also

Brand

Even if Suh really wanted to come here,I would be hesitant with people who use that term.
this is a hard one
msh : 9/28/2014 8:33 pm : link
the there is good reasons for and against

for he is a force, unblockable at times, nasty streak

against a headcase, cap price?,already have jenkins, hankins, bromley and kuhn, thats 3 draft picks plus a high price free agent at the position already

he wants to win sees the giants as a way to get a ring they won 2 in recent years and have a solid roster and figure to challenge for the next few years

i also wonder about the distaction of a guy like him on the giants, when this team won it all on those runs it was because they played like a team and thursday night it seams they are getting that team spirit back. why risk it,and as has already been said he wants paid big i guess

you would need to at least have him in and speak to him get a feel for where his head is and what price he wants and then decide it would be impossible to keep prince, jjp and sign this guy i would rather keep our guys in that instance

prince has really come on the last 2 seasons and jpp is getting back to form too
No thanks
ImaGiant86 : 9/28/2014 8:45 pm : link
With the money he wants we could re-sign Prince and another player.
You are crazy picking prince
kepler20 : 9/29/2014 12:48 am : link
Prince is a nice player, he's good enough to plan man coverage against most #1 receivers, but he doesnt make enough plays on the ball. Is he worth giving a free agent deal to? Are you going to pay him a FA deal where he is basically going to command being paid like a #1 DB, when he wont even be the #1 DB on the team?

I think that is a dubious decision when you consider we can spend it on Suh instead.
again, Prince is a nice player
kepler20 : 9/29/2014 12:56 am : link
but he doesnt make enough impact plays that change the complexion of the game.

DRC his whole career is a lock to get 4 INTs a year. I cant pay a guy a FA deal that wont make impact plays.

He's a nice player, but not an impact one.

Prince is the one locking unto the opposing #1 more often than not and he's made huge strides in the last year or so. He's also improved on playing the ball in the air. If you don't consider that an impact player, I don't know what to tell you.

I do not doubt for 1 second Prince is an ascending player, a rare one at that, whose best years are STILL ahead of him.

My problem is that Prince still doenst project to be a probowl caliber DB. Yes, he is improving, but I'm not convinced he's going to improve into a guy who can be a 4int/20pDEF kind of player. DRC most certainly is because he's basically done that every year of his career.

So if I am given the option of the three, which are

A) Pay Suh
B) Pay Prince 5-7m/year
C) Don't pay Prince

I think the obvious choice is to select A or C. I don't think in this league you can justify paying a guy whose basically very average in terms of production 5-7m a year. Prince isnt a guy who is putting up 4int/20pdef.
Suh
stretch234 : 9/29/2014 8:46 am : link
Would take him in a second. Reality - it will not happen.

How exactly does he fit with the Jets. He is a 4-3 DT who has never player NT in a 3-4. Plus, they have 2 DE in Wilkerson and Richardson who are going to get money
I don't want Prince to move on but he is not an impact
Jimmy Googs : 9/29/2014 8:59 am : link
player. He is an above average corner that is getting better albeit slowly.

Suh is clearly good at what he does. But that price tag will be so high that it is a disinvestment in the rest of the team. My guess is as a FA signing, he will play hard until he knows he doesn't have a Super-Bowl caliber team and then will he will not play hard...
Well, it does bring me back to when Reese had the chance to
BeerFridge : 9/29/2014 9:03 am : link
offer big $$$ to Haynesworth. They did make a big offer, he just got a bigger one in Wash (thank goodness!)

It would seem to me that as much as the Giants value the D Line, they would certainly be interested in a player like Suh.
They offered him 80 Million - ( New Window )
Man I would love to have Suh
PaulBlakeTSU : 9/29/2014 9:41 am : link
on this team. He is as disruptive force as you'll see even when he doesn't fill up the stat sheet. I think he's the best defensive lineman after JJ Watt.

While Suh has crossed the line, I think it's just a matter of refining his concentration and ability to "turn it off" as quickly as he can turn it on.

What I think we are going to see is that the improved offensive line and better fitting offensive scheme will show that Eli is still the goods, and that we can be contenders again and so it might be easier to get certain free agents who want to win rings.
As good as the offensive lines on the cowboys
sshin05 : 9/29/2014 10:31 am : link
and eagles, Suh would an extreme disruptive force on the interior offensive lines. He would immediately give the Giants an edge in every game in the trenches.
Regarding Prince...
EricJ (formerly Tyleraimee) : 9/29/2014 11:26 am : link
Lets wait until the end of the season before we make a final assessment. He absolutely has played better so far this year. Lets see him do it for 16 games. PLUS... he has had difficulty staying on the field. So, we need to make sure we are paying a guy to play and not sit in an ice tub
He's a CB that also plays like a run support safety.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/29/2014 11:44 am : link
really good tackler and not afraid to stick his nose in there and get dirty.

But the last time he had issues staying healthy was 3 years ago.

huh? How do people watch football and not see how good Prince has been? He was excellent last year and has been more of the same this year.

I don't get what people think they're watching sometimes.

As for Suh, at a reasonable price, how could you not want that type of talent?
LTS, consider the fact that it's EricJ making this 'observation'

Was definitely considered

These are the same people, who only see the tangible numbers (interception, pass defended, etc.) without seeing the nuance of the position. That's why many of them were touting how Steve Brown was great because of his gaudy numbers when he was far from great.

Prince has been consistently great for the past two years. He may not get you the interception numbers, but the guy is just rock solid as a CB.
It actually works cap-wise
dpinzow : 9/29/2014 10:57 pm : link
if we extend Eli (giving us a new Bank of Eli) and sign Prince and JPP with cap hits of about 8 million per year each in the first year of their new deals, where they get guaranteed money. It might even work if JPP's 2015 cap hit is 13 million and Prince's is 9 million. The Giants actually have a lot of money available under the cap for 2015. We have a projected 21 million, which will increase substantially with Eli's new deal being backloaded and Rolle's smaller cap number next year. Those two moves will offset most of JPP's and Prince's contract bumps and still give us room for Suh
And the probable departures of Kiwi and Jenkins
dpinzow : 9/29/2014 11:01 pm : link
which frees up another 9.6 million (7.4 from Kiwi and 2.2 from Jenkins)
if it really is possible to re --sign prince jpp and rolle
NewYorkGiants : 9/29/2014 11:48 pm : link
And then still have cash to sign Suh i dont know how anybody wouldnt want him
He is the best DT in the league and is an absolute force and makes this dline one of the top 3 dlines in this league
not gonna happen
spike : 9/30/2014 12:04 am : link
He's not a TC type guy
Hey, if we have the space available, sure
David in LA : 9/30/2014 12:08 am : link
but I'm not breaking the bank for Suh. Hankins isn't Suh, but I think he gives us a similar physical presence in the middle for a fraction of his cost. Honestly, I think JPP gets north of $10m. I'm not sure that we'd have as much dough as we think, then again, we could see a substantial increase in cap with the revenues from the new TV deal.

of a few years aqo (when he went after Haynesworth) might have tried to get that done. But not now, he does not make those decisions anymore. He wasted enough $$$ on Canty. Besides, this guy is also a head case, who could be anthother Haynesworth if things do not go his way. NO way.

The casual fan might think Canty was a waste of money, but he occupied double teams pretty consistently for us, and he filled a position of huge need at the time. Just because his stats didn't show up on the box score does not mean he never lived up to his contract.
I think the problem with Canty is that he was overpaid relative to
