Lupica: Manning replaces Jeter as face of NY

Dawg had the link, but deserves to be highlighted, imv

In the Manning family, they tell a story about Tom Moore, Peyton Manning’s offensive coordinator, watching a game Eli was playing during Eli’s first Super Bowl season, in 2007. It was in Chicago and the week before, Eli had looked as bad as he could look against the Minnesota Vikings at home, throwing four interceptions, the Giants’ record falling to 7-4. If you are a Giants fan, you remember the Vikings game, remember what it was like around here, what the papers were like and what talk radio sounded like, in the days and nights after that.

Then the Giants went into Chicago and won 21-16 the next week. And Tom Moore said to Peyton Manning, “Your brother has b---s.” Peyton already knew that. But that game against the Bears, on the road, after what had happened the week before, started to show everybody. Then the Giants were playing the unbeaten Patriots a hard game during the regular season, then they were beating the Cowboys on the road and the Packers when it was 20 degrees below and beating the 18-0 Patriots at University of Phoenix Stadium because Eli took them down the field when he had to

Archie Manning doesn’t like to talk X’s and O’s with his sons, especially not during the season, and isn’t about to start doing that now. But here is what he told Eli after the way his son played against Washington and the way the team looked:

“I have never seen you so in charge of the offense.”

Interesting comment from Archie

Guy is just a whiney douche bag. Doesn't he write a political column now too? May God spare us all.
I agree with Archie

And the post game interview Eli did on Thursday he looked like he was still "in the zone". He seemed to have a fire in his eyes I haven't seen.
after the Texans game

Archie said "Eli likes this new offense a lot, it's going to be really good for him" (paraphrasing here).

Now we have this quote.

Makes me think that Eli has been raving to Archie about this offense.
I don't think so personality wise

Eli doesn't have the urban cool Jeter or other face of NY athletes have had.

Yes, he's all of that, no dispute there. Yet, Aside from Garafolo, He's the only columnest I enjoy reading, smugness notwithstanding

Because it's the truth. Eli has never been in command the way he was Thursday night. He may have played better games, but he was a true field general that night.
Lupica's pro Giant at least.

Jeter is irreplaceable!

I'm sorry but Eli Manning couldn't shine Jeter's shoes. He has neither the intelligence or command of the English language to represent the sports hub of America.

Not a knock on Eli, it's just reality.
