2-2 start is bad enough to fire him, but the 1-11 and 3-9 seasons before that were acceptable enough to let him coach his third season? Hell, 2-2 is a roaring start by Kansas standards.
Their wins were Central Michigan and SE Miss St (both were close games). In their two FBS games they lost to Duke 41-3 and Texas 23-0, and they looked even worse than those scores. He has only won 1 Big-12 game in his three years and 4 FBS teams (in total). They are a pitiful team.
had that 2-3 year run of winning with another slob. His name was Mangino or something like that. Cheater supreme. We find the defendant incredibly guilty. I remember watching that guy earlier in his career in the MAC. He won a championship, maybe for Toledo. Near the end of the game a fan of the other team threw a boxed slice of pizza at him. He picked it off the ground and ate it. Why bring this up? Maybe they should bring him back. The last time Kansas had done anything major was with Bobby Douglas, the year the Jayhawks went to the Orange Bowl against the Generics in the infamous 5-down affair.
Back to Charlie. There were not 1 but 2 instances when he was the People's Churse to replace Coughlin as HC. As noted above, with about a 60M payout, this remains a beautiful country.
calls when Weis was the OC for the Patriots were uncanny. He called plays almost like he knew what plays the defense was going to run.
agree completely. They had that stretch of 34-4 across two seasons in NE with basically old or average (or worse) skill position players. Brady is of course Brady but nobody on that offense aside from him was scaring anyone. Let's also not forget the miracle he performed with an ancient Testaverde with the Jets in 98 and a playoff appearance with Matt Cassell in KC.
What most people didn't know about Weiss back then was that he was a raging asshole with a talent for alienating people. Every ND alumnus I know has a story about how he pissed someone off in South Bend. His arrogance and flat out awful personality has more to deal with his failures as a head coach than any lack of coaching talent IMO.

...I dread the day TC is gone.
TC is a really, really good HC. At this point in almost every way, with one caveat that he tends to over-rely on his own old vets coming back after injury (especially on the OL?!)
He's great in the specifics of preparation, in organizational skills, in leadership, in motivation, and just wonderful with the media.
He won't be easy to replace although that day can't be too far off given his age. In a weird way, I'm dreading his next SB win (if) because IMO he might call it a wrap after that.
My guess is Fewell would get 1st crack at replacing him, and PF might actually be a better HC than DC, but I doubt he's another TC or better.
will not get first crack. If Coughlin goes out on his own terms and the team is playing relatively well, McAdoo is going to be the assistant that gets first crack. I'm sure he was not promised anything but he had a chance to get the Browns head coaching job (some even believe he was offered it) and ultimately chose the Giants offensive coordinator position. Fewell will not be a head coach here when Coughlin retires.
I loved the offense and he was an EXCELLENT recruiter. However, like his personal life, he had no clue about strength & conditioning or nutrition. Hard to get the most out of the players when those aren't a part of the picture.
when he can no longer run along the sideline to make faces and comments at the ref after a really stupid call. It's all in the knees.
McAdoo would appear to make sense as a successor. What he ahs done with the offense is impressive, and Fewell is unlikely to be drawn away by an HC offer elsewhere.

He was a decent recruiter, not an excellent one. He was an excellent recruiter of the skill positions, but largely ignored the offensive and defensive lines.
Braxton Cave, and Chris Watt all started in the NC game and all were recruited by Weis. He recruited 6 of the 8 linemen who started in 2012. I think he didn't get enough out of those guys, but he certainly didn't ignore the lines.
committed to ND after Weis got fired. Yes he recruited him but Nix committed to the school, not Weis.
He had one decent class and the rest were shitty on both the OL and DL. He didn't recruit on the OL and DL anywhere near the level he did at the skill positions. And they routinely got their asses kicked up front as a result
ended up being a pretty crappy coach, but I was a law student at ND during his first two years and they were a shitload of fun. Lots of fun games to see live.
recruiting get was Manti Te'o. Everyone had Te'o going to USC.
He was a decent recruiter, but I would echo Mook in saying that outside of the offensive skill positions and Te'o he really didn't recruit all that well.
players isn't a crime. He would've needed 5 Zack Martins to match the caliber of his skill position recruits.
Substandard coach? Absolutely, even with 2 BCS appearances. Subpar recruiter of linemen? I don't see how that's possible when more than half of the starting OL & DL on an undefeated team were recruited by him (even if you don't give him credit for Nix). I don't think recruiting linemen was his problem... the problem was not getting as much out of them as Brian Kelly ultimately did.

Coughlin's reply? "Tell him to fix Notre Dame first"
As far as I'm concerned, Coughlin can coach until he's 80.

Starting to think TC has got Marv Levy longevity in him.
