IRVING, Texas -- Morris Claiborne's season has ended because he tore a patellar tendon in his left knee during the Dallas Cowboys' win Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Claiborne suffered the noncontact injury on a third-and-3 play with 5:52 left in the first quarter. He did not return to the game, and owner and general manager Jerry Jones said initial fears were a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Claiborne will have surgery in a few days.

How does one tear a patellar tendon w/out contact?
BlueLou : 9/29/2014 4:00 pm : link
Too much force/torque put on it from an unnatural angle?

At least it's not ONLY us - (KP, TT, Wilson, Chad Jones) losing high draft picks on guys who flame out with injuries.
has anyone done a study
PaulBlakeTSU : 9/29/2014 4:00 pm : link
on NFL knee injuries occurring on grass vs. field turf?
I believe that injury

May be worse than a torn ACL in terms of recovery and severity. Any medical experts out there that can comment on this?

I believe there have been a number of them. It's been heavily studied.

Claiborne and the Cowboys

Gerry says "Claiborn is going to be a good player in this league" however it probably won't be for the Cowboys. They just had a " Coming to Jesus" meeting with him last week and on the first play he falls on his ass and blows a knee.

Jerry can't be a happy Cowboy about that.

I read somewhere that over 50% of knee ligament injuries are non contact.
what a shitty season for him

called out by the front office, demoted, and promptly blows out a knee. Oof.
Sintim & Hixon' knees

wasn't Steve Smith's injury a non-contact as well or am I misremembering?
Smith got horse collared pretty badly

If I remember correctly
This is a tendon injury.
BlueLou : 9/29/2014 4:50 pm : link
Tendons are typically much stronger than ligaments as they attach muscle to bone and are kinesiologically functional much moreso than ligaments that merely attach bone to bone. Yeah achilles tendons can blow out w/out contact of course but it's pretty rare compared with knee ligament damage playing football.
The two picks the Cowboys traded to get Claiborne (#14 and #45) ...

...turned out be Michael Brockers and Alshon Jeffery. Not saying Dallas would have picked Jeffery, but the thought of him opposite Dez Bryant is kind of daunting.
A patellar tendon injury
BH28 : 9/29/2014 5:07 pm : link
Is usually precluded by chronic patellar tendon tendonitis where the tendon has suffered small tears.

Most achilles tendon tears are non-contact injuries

I tore my patellar, and "too much force/torque put on it from an unnatural angle" is just about right.
i wish i could find an article

but the vast majority of acl/ligament tears come from noncontact sudden deceleration events.
