anyone following Marvin Austin?

Dan in the Springs : 9/29/2014 10:06 pm
Just curious how he doing and looking for someone who actually has watched the game and noticed. As usual, there was news about him in the preseason, haven't heard from him since.
His father died before the Seattle game.

He played, in his usual rotational role. The Broncos seem happy with him. They were off in Week 4, so no news.

The fact that Rolando McClain is doing. We needed linebackers and Dallas gets him for nothing. Meanwhile we have Herzlich running the opposite way of the play.

All part of his master plan. He's crazy like a fox, that one...
I wonder how many players face the same predicament ….

As he did, coming into the NFL -

Get chosen high in the NFL, while trying to hide an injury (in his case his back), hoping they can just "gut it through". It looks like it's going to eventually work out for him. I wish him the best.

It didn't work for David Wilson. I think that's why he was so unbelievably stoic when the final medical decision came down. He was playing on borrowed time.
Manny your guess about Wilson is so far off
BlueLou : 9/30/2014 12:55 am : link
It's laughable. You obviously recall nothing about Wilson from his rookie year. He wasn't aware of his neck problems at all.
Coughlin also refused to play him
bhill410 : 9/30/2014 6:30 am : link
His first year which makes the pick even that much more laughable. Remember that falcon game where he has the td, did the backflip and then didn't see the field again while we got trounced with division on the line.
bhill410: The TD was against Baltimore.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/30/2014 6:51 am : link
The Atlanta game was a shutout. So you remember the play vividly enough to criticize Coughlin, but you don't remember the opponent or circumstances. OK.

Crazy is good as long as he can play and not slap around any of their family members if course.

Yeah right. Blame Coughlin for not playing a RB who could not block, follow his blockers or demonstrate that he was still not learning the position. TC plays those who gives us the best chance to win. Get real. Wilson was a bad 1st round pick by Reese for our offense. Strictly a measurables guy again.

Another idiot spewing the "Coughlin won't play rookies" mantra. You have no idea what you are watching. Wilson didn't play because he didn't understand the playbook, did not know where he was supposed to be. His position coach (Jerrold Ingram) said so publicly. Andre Williams is playing. Richburg is playing. An undrafted FA TE who basically didn't play for 2 years is playing and flourishing. Wilson was a superb athlete who would have been nothing more than a great weapon as a KO returner and situational back. He never would have been an every down player.
Not that I want to blame TC for not playing rookies...
jcn56 : 9/30/2014 8:19 am : link
but Ingram did get the ax at the end of last season. I wonder if maybe the lack of development of RBs after Bradshaw and Jacobs was partially to blame.
jcn56. Firing a guy for failing to develop Da'Rel Scott...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/30/2014 8:45 am : link
...and Michael Cox seems a little harsh. Or maybe he got fired for tearing Andre Brown's achilles, or for missing Wilson's spinal stenosis. Of course, the Giants' anemic running game for most of the past three years contributed to Ingram's downfall, just a our crappy TEs helped get Pope fired. But that's only part of the story, and I don't think it's a very big one.

If the Giants had fired coaches strictly based on performance, Tom Quinn would have gotten the boot long before Ingram and Pope. Herrmann, Ryan, Gilbride II and Flaherty would be gone too. I think the reality is just that McAdoo was given a strong say in the composition of the offensive staff, and he chose to replace a couple of longtime Coughlin stalwarts.
Austin was not ready/healthy to play year one
Defenderdawg : 9/30/2014 8:47 am : link
He was a second-round draft choice of the Giants in 2011, but he missed his rookie season with a torn chest muscle. He played in eight games in 2012 while dealing with a bad back that resulted in a weak right leg. And he played in a total of three games last season for Miami and Dallas. The Cowboys released him after just one game and one tackle when his bad back acted up in practice.

Then came back surgery.

Be careful about revisionist history.

They got him for nothing because the guy had already retired from the NFL twice. He showed no desire to work for a position job in Baltimore. He's a crazy person.

I specifically recall Marvin Austin complaining about his back and the size of the beds provided at camp. I blame the small ass beds for his unknown back problem!

My my main point is we are not having any issues at DT right now and following a guy who to be honest was a huge pile pif shit in college and didn't show much work ethic here either doesn't serve much purpose. Dallas cut him as well so it seemed he needed a bit of a jump start.

Supposedly the Giants liked McClain coming out and given how badly the Giants seem to need depth at that position McClain is a guy I'd examine since he's actually starting. As opposed to Austin who is still pretty much a back up 2nd stringer.
Oh and crazy
LauderdaleMatty : 9/30/2014 3:23 pm : link
is fine with me if it means he doesn't literally run the opposite way of a play. Kiddding, kinda.
Lou, Wilson DID know early -on ….
Manny in CA : 9/30/2014 8:13 pm : link
But as I suggested, I believe he just put it in the back of his mind (but maybe he was tolerating some moderate discomfort). From the Daily News (oct 2013), this is what he said when he was injured with the Giants ….

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/wilson-afraid-neck-injury-season-ending-article-1.1483138

Wilson said he suffered a similar injury in college, which is why he thought it was no big deal. The Giants sent him for tests the next day anyway and “they saw something, but they want to make sure.

“They’re just telling me to sit out until further notice,” he said. “I’m just as clueless as you all are.”

What they saw, Wilson said, is that one of the vertebrae in his neck is “closer to my spinal cord.

. . . Of course, I feel like none of my spine is lined up perfectly, especially after years of playing football. We’ve all got something here or there.”

As I noted, he was incredibly stoic and accepting of his fate (not surprised and visibly upset, as any young person whose lifetime dream has been so abruptly taken away)

"Strictly a measurables guy?" Really? Did you see the kind of numbers he put up in college? Take a look.

Was he named the ACC Player of the Year (and Offensive Player of the Year) based on his "measurables" or on his production?
Wilson
mrvax : 10/1/2014 1:27 pm : link
was an outstanding pick at the time.
It was also a NEED pick. We had no running backs. Bradshaw was gone and Brown was sure to be injured again.

Wilson was one of the fastest, shiftiest RBs to come out of college in years. Had he learned to block better he would have played more. He did fantastic running with the ball in his hands on kick offs.

Just imagine if he had a decent Oline making small holes for him. I believe he would have been at least as good as Shady.
His style would be similar to Sanders.
Manny, Wilson predicted an HOF career
BlueLou : 10/1/2014 1:51 pm : link
for himself as a rookie. He had ZERO clue his career would end in less than 2 full years when he arrived to the NFL. And your quote does not prove otherwise. It doesn't even suggest otherwise if you read it carefully.
