Looking back: 2008 Why did we lose to the BROWNS??

State of the Giants 14 : 9/30/2014 2:47 am
I was just lying in bed trying to fall asleep and my wife keeps snoring so I was not even close to successful. Gonna be a rough one tomorrow morning. Between her snoring and me tossing and turning, I began to think of the year 2008. What a great year! I thought how we still only have 3 components from the 2007 team (Eli, Kiwi, and Zak) and if you wanna include Coughlin go right ahead!

But the thing that befuddles me is how great everything was going until Plaxico was an idiot, of course, but that is another story...but the thing that made me think was how everything up until Plaxico, how everything was just clicking. That was the greatest display of football I've seen in my older years. I felt like we were so untouchable but ...man, why did the Giants get killed by the Cleveland f'n Browns on that Monday Night game? Prior to that game (not including regular season, of course) we didn't lose since December 2007 and then didn't lose again until the Eagle game in December 2008 at home.

But why was that game a loss and why was it such a shit show?? I really don't understand.

got torched on multiple double moves vs Braylon

Eli had a poor 2nd half

iirc shaun rogers also buried eli and his shoulder into the turf on a play in the first half.
As horribly as the Giants' defense played that night...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/30/2014 3:18 am : link
...the script was pretty typical for an NFL upset: The Browns were +3 on turnovers and converted 69% of their third downs. If the game revealed anything, it was how pedestrian Spagnuolo's unit could be when the pass rush didn't get home. They couldn't cover Braylon Edwards, and they couldn't get off the field. The Browns didn't punt all night, despite making plenty of mistakes themselves.

The Giants actually had a chance to get back in the game with eight-something left, but Eli threw a pick-six inside the Cleveland ten, and it was effectively over.

Burress was back in the lineup after a one-week suspension, and caught a TD, but his act was already wearing thin long before he shot himself. So maybe the handwriting was on the wall for the team's eventual fall. But any team can have a bad game - especially at night, on the road.
I had forgotten about Rogers.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/30/2014 3:44 am : link
O'Hara tended to struggle with power directly in his face, and that night was a good example. Rogers also had a great game against the Giants four years earlier, for the Lions.

I think Antonio Pierce got hurt about midway through the Browns game. Jamal Lewis spent the second half dragging Bryan Kehl around the field.
If I recall ....

Didn't we play the Browns in the preseason of that year as well, and if I'm not mistaken we beat them pretty handily, maybe even embarressing them. So when the regular season came and we were what 6-0, maybe that game was a circled/payback type of match-up for them ( as well as us being the defendung Superbowl champs and all ).

This, most of the Browns players said they circled the game. Edwards said it was like the SB for them, pretty sad for an organization.

The browns hadn't had a nationally televised Monday night game at home in something like 15 years.... The fans and team were fired up. I also remember something about Braylon Edwards wanting to put on a show as he wanted out of Cleveland.

Like blogger said, it had all the makings of an upset. Dare I say, we walked into a buzz saw of sorts that night.
The game plan went out the window
oipolloi : 9/30/2014 5:04 am : link
Giants wanted to come in and dominate on the ground and control the clock.

Then they fell behind and had to scrap the rush. Hard to win when you can't run the plays you practiced all week.

Unfortunately, it proved to be a harbinger of things to come.
Braylon Edwards kicked our ass
David in LA : 9/30/2014 5:18 am : link
it's as simple as that.

SanFranGiantsFan : 9/30/2014 6:21 am : link
Browns first home primetime game since like the Reagan administration, Edwards having a huge game, & the classic 4-0 team probably feeling too good about themselves.

All I remember about that game was Eli throwing a pick in the red zone & their fans chanting 'Overrated!' as the game came to an end.

By the way, they've won 0 playoff games since then. We won 1 Super Bowl.
Simetimes shit happens.

The Steelers losing to a pathetic, winless, TB team at home on Sunday, is one of countless examples

i remember that game too and yes we waxed them. it was a nationally televised preseason game...

the calendar year 2008 was the greatest ive ever seen for NYG. a magical playoff run in jan/feb and then an juggernaut regular season in the fall. sigh.
Watch out,

I think tonight, you wonder how they lost the SB after that 41-0 win....maybe a glass of warm milk?

This is what I think too. MNF and SNF games are tricky games sometimes because the "lights" are on for some players that feel they have something to prove. The Browns were very fired up to play the defending champs at home...

Lol and Giants SF fan, how many different QBs have they had since 08? Anyone in Cleveland would give up both their left and right one for Eli Manning as their QB. That night reminds me when people say "it's not like you're a Browns fan!"....Eh, FUCK them. Just the AFC version of the Detroit Lions.

The 97-98 teams were great defensively, they just had shit offense, sort of the Jets today (except the Jets D is a step down).

Is there a "BBI" for every single team? I can't imagine many people giving this much of a shit about the Jaguars or the Chargers.
You guys have incredible memories

I have no recollection of this game.
Well, it was the only game we lost in our first 12 that year..
arcarsenal : 9/30/2014 8:56 am : link
I sure as hell remember it. It was frustrating. Just one of those games where you know you are the better team but just cannot ever get it going. I definitely remember the drive where we looked like we were going to get back in it.. after a Steve Smith catch especially.. and then we turned it over (pick 6 I think) and that was that.
I do remember
Route 9 in LEH : 9/30/2014 9:14 am : link
when the Giants lost that game, on Facebook and whatever, everyone and their brother was ripping into the Giants. It was weird. It was kind of a "Yankee dynasty feel" as if people were getting sick of the Giants winning for the past year. It was no post Yankee-Diamondbacks 2001 World Series where you had Met fans wearing Diamondbacks championship shirts the very next day. I don't care, because as long as the Giants are winning. I'm good.

of BBI. Nobody can.
IIRC, it was a Monday night game,
Section331 : 9/30/2014 9:48 am : link
and the Brownies came out REALLY fired up; Derek Anderson played out of his mind, and Braylon Edwards torched us. The Giants probably came into the game a little flat, expecting Cleveland to lay down. That doesn't happen often in the NFL, especially for home night games.
We took them lightly.
Mike in Long Beach : 9/30/2014 9:56 am : link
We were not a team ready to play that day. Ross' disaster of a game didn't help.

I think it's because this game was such an outlier during that first 3/4s of the season when we had Plax. We were destroying (or at the very least, beating) contending teams week after week, we are defending Super Bowl Champs, and then on national television we get destroyed (and I mean destroyed) by a bad football team?

It just didn't make sense. I even remember here and BBI and elsewhere with Giants fans, no one was even mad. It was more shock. Like... wtf?

that game. They had a good plan. I think they ran a lot of odd shit too. Their UFO formation and just stuff I ever seen, they were throwing everything at us.

Also, Boom or Bust offense we ran, and that day we went bust. Eli was 18 28 196 1TD 3Ints

For a QB in his 4th year, those are god awful numbers.

Interesting to look at the sad state of the Jaguars' forum.

Love this poll: is nfl paying jags to lose on purpose?!

Also, in a post entilted, "There is hope."

Quote:
"When I see Brady get dominated by a 1-2 team (KC), there is hope for us still. Then maybe i'm over reaching."

"Have another beer."
I was there. Ross faked injury he got burned
BLUATHRT : 9/30/2014 11:00 am : link
So badly on one tad catch by Edwards. Team was as flat as could be.
To me this was actually a pretty important game in the narrative of
Go Terps : 9/30/2014 11:11 am : link
that season and the following. What stands out was the Browns moving Rogers off the LOS and using him as a battering ram to destroy the interior OL. It was like something out of Game of Thrones.

I remember that game being the first sign of cracking along what had been a great OL. The cracking continued further in Dallas and again in the playoff loss to Philly, where they could not handle Patterson and Bunkley and failed on some key 4th and short plays.
I remember
terz22 : 9/30/2014 11:31 am : link
that loser fan base chanting "overrated" as they were beating us. What a joke.

AH you mean that formation where their whole DL/LB would just stand around near the line and Eli had no idea what was coming?

Yeah I think they ran that look a ton and it gave us problems
