New York Giants 2015 NFL Draft: Quarter-Point Thoughts - ( New Window )
Nice report Colin.
Victor in CT : 9/30/2014 1:18 pm : link
but as you yourself said, its way too soon to say what they will need and what talent we be available when they pick.

Interesting that you note the wealth of talent at WR and dearth at OL this year. You're not helping me get over my disappointment at the Giants passing on Zack Martin. :-)
Semi-sleeper: Marcus Rush
PeterS : 9/30/2014 1:19 pm : link
LB from Michigan State. 4-year starter in one of the best defensive programs. 6026/248 4.7. Should be there in 5th round.

Also, Derron Smith, S, Fresno State.
Ooops!
PeterS : 9/30/2014 1:24 pm : link
Sorry - I thought this was an open-ended thread. Gurley is easily one of the best in the nation. Personally, I'd take Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA.
i love gurley as im sure
area junc : 9/30/2014 1:29 pm : link
everyone else does. have no problem picking him in the 1st round. its about getting football players and gurley is a stud

as written by colin hes AP-like and is probably gone when it shakes out

i'd be looking defense but thats always what i want in the 1st round. A stud S to groom next 2 Rolle. we saw what having an impact player (will hill) did for our team
I agree area junc
sjnyfan : 9/30/2014 1:34 pm : link
Even if we re-sign Rolle and I think we will, safety is a top priority going into this draft. I'm looking forward to Ole Miss and Alabama this week. One of the reasons is their safeties. I think Landon Collins is the top safety in the class this year and we may not have a shot. But Cody Prewitt from Ole Miss will join him come season end as an All SEC performer if not All American. Karl Joseph from WVU is another to watch.
At this early stage
mrvax : 9/30/2014 1:38 pm : link
I have to think S and LB would be need picks. who knows about Cooper Taylor? How many more years for Rolle? At LB we only have Beason and Kennard.
It's likely the Giants will do what they have always done under Reese
BillT : 9/30/2014 1:38 pm : link
Spend two of their top three picks on WR, DL or DB . I think another WR makes the sense. It's what the NFL today is all about. Safety maybe as second choice with Rolle our only top player at that position. The addition of Moore, Hankins and Bromley and the likelihood of resigning JPP make DL less of a priority.
Do not ignore the OL early in this draft
Rick in Dallas : 9/30/2014 1:49 pm : link
Need to continue the youth movement. Look at that Cowboys OL..
2015 draft
Colin@gbn : 9/30/2014 1:55 pm : link
hey guys: Good comments as usual; have to head out to #2 grandson's 4th birthday but will try and pop by later this evening to answer any questions etc.

In the meantime a couple of thoughts just to humor an old draft guy:

First, I really wish people would stop referring to Jerry Reese's picks; he doesn't make the picks, never has and likely never will. As much as any organization in the league the Giants ultimately make their picks as an organisition with input from several dozens of personnel people including scouts and coaches. Talking about Reese's picks make one look like they don't really have a clue even before they start.

Second, and more importantly think players as much as possible. Area said it best; whatever else they do at the draft the Giants take players not positions. Also in a similar context try and ask yourself which player gets us closer to a championship and not just which player upgrades the weakest position.
Colin, another possible early entry at WR
njm : 9/30/2014 1:57 pm : link
You need to add Leonte Carroo to your list of WR prospects over on GBN. Probably somewhere between 8 & 12 on your list. If he's there in the 3rd I hope the Giants take him.

My favorite LB at the moment
sjnyfan : 9/30/2014 2:10 pm : link
is Eric Kendricks of UCLA. His brother Mychal plays for the Eagles but I think he has the potential to be the better of the two. The guy is all over the field and can play inside and out. He can thump you in the run game but has the awareness and speed to cover some too. Through 4 games he has 47 tackles, 3 TFL's and 1 INT which was returned for a TD. Big test on the 11th against Oregon but I will be watching.
I'm just as intrigued by
barens : 9/30/2014 2:14 pm : link
Nebraska's running back Abdullah as I am Gurley. He's awfully quick and powerful, and doesn't have as much of an injury history as Gurley.
OL I'd like to see in blue
sjnyfan : 9/30/2014 2:16 pm : link
is Syracuse's Sean Hickey. We've had success with the Orange recently and Hickey could continue that. Very similar build and skillset as Pugh. I think he could play multiple positions on the line as well. I expect a similar rise during the draft process as his former lineman come 2015

I'd like
Carl in CT : 9/30/2014 2:23 pm : link
Shaq Thompson. Just a pure football player. Put him in at Safety (or can play the Wil) and forget about the position for 10 years! Next Ed Reed ability to dominate ie Troy pol.
Another Shaq - Anthony from Clemson
KeoweeFan : 9/30/2014 2:27 pm : link
at LB. He's starting to make noise.
Stefon Diggs WR from MD will probably be an early declare
Giants11 : 9/30/2014 2:31 pm : link
and could be dynamic in the pro's. He's played with a mish mash of QB's at MD, got hurt last year and though CJ Brown has settled in as the starter he's hardly an NFL QB throwing the ball. He could be a slot monster in the pro's.
This team needs a RB that is an all purpose threat
sjnyfan : 9/30/2014 2:35 pm : link
ASU's DJ Foster brings that in buckets. Over 1,000 yards All purpose in his first two seasons but now that he's the guy he has 747 through 4 games with 6 TDs.

For his career so far he has 117 receptions and 9 TDs in 2+ seasons. He's very smooth in his routes with hands and sees the field well. ASU hasn't had him on specials but there's no doubt in my mind that he can do it. He has another year of eligibilty but if his year continues on this path I can't see him staying. He could wind up with a 1000/1000 year.
Sorry Colin
BigBlueCane : 9/30/2014 2:36 pm : link
but these are Reese's drafts. He has final say and it's ultimately his head on the line.

And for them to ignore the OL again, would be absolutely idiotic.
Wow, draft talk. Okay I will play...
Jimmy Googs : 9/30/2014 3:25 pm : link
Biggest Needs - Def End, LB, WR, Safety, Tackle

Likely Giant Type Picks - Def End, WR, CB
RE: Sorry Colin
rdt288 : 9/30/2014 4:02 pm : link

I think you are wrong. Reese doesn't unilaterally make picks

Hundley?

God no.
Draft/Offseason needs to focus
drkenneth : 9/30/2014 4:15 pm : link
on OL and weapons for Eli.
Areas of need:
I wanna be Torbor, sucka : 9/30/2014 4:22 pm : link
O-line - Both depth, and for starters. Behind our starting 5 is very little talent. And Jerry is not a long-term solution. I'd like to get an interior lineman.

Pass rusher - I think this is Kiwi's last year here. Ayers is not a long-term solution. I like JPP and Moore. We need another guy there though.

Linebacker - Every year with this. I have accepted that the Giants don't want to use premium picks at LB, and I can somewhat understand that. But Beason is injury prone and they don't have depth behind him.

Safety: This season hopefully reveals a bit of what we have with Berhe. Its really too bad Taylor got hurt, because he would have had a chance to shine. Stevie Brown doesn't seem long for this team. Rolle is a critical player and I hope hanging on to him is affordable.

As far as players, I haven't seen much so I'll only make mention of one name: Miami ILB Denzel Perryman. He sure looks like a player. Not a prototypical Giants linebacker at under 6', but knocks people on their backs.
A lot of football to be played...
Dunedin81 : 9/30/2014 4:24 pm : link
we might need another starter up front or that line might coalesce. We may look at 3-techniques, but outside of Austin we haven't drafted one high in quite some time and we may have something in Bromley. Our DBs might be very deep or they might thin out quickly. If Randle and Beckham flash going forward we may not have a need for a top wideout, ditto Donnell and the TE position, but if not it could be a nice mix of need and value.
Linebacker
scott in albany : 9/30/2014 5:26 pm : link
Please.
no mention of TE position
stoneman : 9/30/2014 5:32 pm : link
Even with Donnely progressing, this offense runs on the TE production - all 3rd down and red zone plays in the 1st 4 games.
Is it too much to hope that they would take a LB
jeff57 : 9/30/2014 7:04 pm : link
like Perryman or Kendricks? Probably. But since it's so early, they still could end up with one of the top OTs.
didn't say unilaterally
BigBlueCane : 9/30/2014 7:45 pm : link
But he has final save on draft day AND its his job to review Ross's performance.

Colin, Thank you......the best question relative to what we know is
George from PA : 9/30/2014 8:02 pm : link
Which players most resemble these FAs or 30+?

A.Rolle
JPP
Jenkins
Brown
Beason

I know not position but the player......but holes and near future holes are real concerns and the draft is how we get younger and build roster.
Who's to blame
Colin@gbn : 9/30/2014 9:44 pm : link
Cane et al: The problem I have with the way the whole draft business is discussed on BBI is that it appears to be based on the rather sophomoric notion that Reese, or Ross or whoever shows up at the Giants offices on draft day with their lists and start making the team's picks the same way Buckaroo Bob from Brooklyn does once the Giants get on the clock. Fact is the Giants invest hundreds of man-hours and millions of dollars putting together their draft board and short lists. Then as the draft unfolds there is constant communication around the table updating the short list etc such that when they do get on the clock the choice - if there even is one - is between no more than 2-3 players with the highest grade. In fact, the whole point of the Giants personnel structure as set up by George Young back in the late 1970s is that you DO NOT have a situation where just one guy (and whatever his personal biases) has a disproportionate impact on personnel decisions.

Colin, thanks for the comments.

Do you think Derron Smith lasts until 3rd round? I keep reading mid-2nd.

What do you think of Shawn Oakman & Cedric Reed as NYG type DEs?

And, I think Perryman in 2nd would be great for Giants.
comments ...
Colin@gbn : 9/30/2014 11:19 pm : link
My pleasure Bob ... anything is possible but I would doubt at this point that Smith lasts much past the end of the second round; the good news for the Giants though is that there 4-5 safeties around whom he is grouped and there is a better than even chance that at least one lasts into the middle of the third ... re the DEs Reed lacks the kind of speed off the edge that I suspect the Giants would be looking for and probably isnt much more than a mid 3rd day type at this point; meanwhile, Oakman also lacks real quickness and closing speed and looks more like a 3-4 type DE but is just such an imposing physical presence that a lot of options would likely be on the table ... Perryman would certainly be good value in the mid-second; he is a really good LB with some speed, but I suspect if the Giants were to use a premium pick on a LB it would be a WLB type that can really run and cover and while DP can run he isn't real agile or instinctive in coverage and I personally just don't see the Giants using a #2 pick on a MLB.

BigBlueCane : 10/1/2014 4:19 am : link
I'm pretty sure Reese has final say over the draft picks regardless of who is on the committee and what the 'process' says.

And Perryman's a waste. He's been neutered by Golden. He's been effectively R** H******-'d.
Reese doesn't unilaterally
fkap : 10/1/2014 12:39 pm : link
make picks, but I'd guess he runs the process, and ultimately guides the pick when there isn't clear consensus. I'm guessing this is the same with all organizations. It's one of the reasons position coaches don't get let off the hook for picks at their position. It's a dysfunctional organization that wouldn't consult the RB coach when considering RBs.

Also, the Giants may pick players, not positions, but coincidentally, at the top of the draft, the players seem to play the same positions, overall.
after a quarter of play....
BillKo : 10/1/2014 1:12 pm : link
We need a all purpose guy in the middle you can just run all over the field. I appreciate Beason but we all know he's not a youngling and an injury waiting to happen.

I also think a scat back type for change of pace, and probably another WR to push OBJ and Randle.

And of course, never fall asleep on the OL......
The UFA Safety market in 2015...
Klaatu : 10/1/2014 2:07 pm : link
Looks a lot like the UFA CB market did in 2014. Let's see what the Giants do in free agency first, before we jump to any draft conclusions about Safeties.
Interesting review
jLefty : 10/1/2014 3:37 pm : link
he doesn't mention Jennings who just ran for 176 yarda on the ground. And no discussion regarding Odell Beckham. If he's as good as everyone says, it will certainly change any draft strategy for next year. The o-line seems to be doing pretty well so far. It's a little early to start a movement to get the next year's Levin.

This is exactly why I believe it is moronic for posters that claim they should have drafted Zack Martin. They had the chance and the Giants brain trust decided it was certainly NOT the correct decision at pick #12.
