I finally had to start using it at work about 6 months ago and I don't get the uproar. The start screen is a vast improvement to the old rats nest of the start menu. I boot to desktop and it's just a better, faster version of Windows 7.
8.1 is more like 7 and 8 is for touch screen devices..
that is what I was told
They're both touch friendly. I think 8.1 is where they gave people the choice to boot to the start screen or the desktop. Like I mentioned, choose the latter and it's not much of a jump from 7.
I will have to download 8.1 for my wife and upgrade it. She hates how temperamental it is. I know she is not used to it.. so if I can boot her into a windows 7 friendly screen that would be a lot better.
This announcement for Win10 to be released sometime next year...
OS be the same. Just a dumb idea because what happens is that it's not really good at either. 8.1 was a step to fix that and I hope that Windows 10 (weird that they blew off 9) will go the rest of the way to be a good desktop OS. I think Windows 7 was tremendous. If you aren't using a touch screen then navigating Windows 8 was a pain in the ass.
I have 2 calculator apps, 2 evernote apps
There is no reason to have 2 different user experiences on a laptop. Its just a disjointed, awful experience, and I don't think the "its ok once you get used to it" is a good excuse.
Windows 10 looks like they re undoing most of that garbage though, and I can't wait for the multiple work spaces feature.
Once you get around the oddness of the UI and desktop vs. metro situation, windows 8 is mostly a pretty good OS.
But those mistakes are just so obvious and get in the way to much.
Sheep.
My wife has Windows 8 on her laptop.. she hates it.

It sounds like an Onion article.

It's only the "Metro" interface that's a pain.
