Thoughts on playing Odel against Atlanta

nicky43 : 9/30/2014 5:28 pm
Should TC play him or not? That is the question. After reading the excellent write-up on Hamstrings posted on BBI earlier I'm thinking we should hold him out to play it safe as even he admits it is not yet fully healed but he is close to being 100%.

Atlanta's pass defense is third worse in the league so maybe it would be a good game to start him in to get some confidence fast but then again if they are that bad do we really need him?

No doubt he can probably help and this game is very important and could be a shooting match so maybe we do play him.

But after reading that hamstring article and knowing the value he can bring to the team, I think we play it safe and keep him out and let those hammys fully heal as much as I can't wait to see him out there.

If he's cleared to play do you think TC will play him?

If he's cleared by the doctors

and knows the plays he should play.

thoughts?
kepler20 : 9/30/2014 5:31 pm : link
Im excited to see him play

But i'm also upset because of the success of his peers in his draft. Particularly guys whove already been playing and contributing to their team in spades.

RE: Donald, Martin, Mosley, Fuller, etc.
I don't see him playing this week.

I dont think he is ready to play

except maybe a few snaps.
I think we can beat Atlanta without him
nicky43 : 9/30/2014 5:40 pm : link
So from that perspective I believe TC will play it safe and keep him out and give him another week of practice and timing and play learning.

What does the little man inside of you say?

See you gotta listen to the little man.

The little man knows all.

who has practiced as few times as this kid has isn't going to get a uni on game day from Coughlin quite yet. I could even see it being 2 more weeks.
Odel has 2 L's.

I'd keep him out until after the bye. He'll get more reps with Eli practice-wise

new toy as much as the next fan. But the coaches and medical staff see him in practice every day, so I trust they will make that call when they believe he is ready
Get Odell on the field!
Tark10 : 9/30/2014 5:53 pm : link
Just line him up for a few plays.. get his feet wet..then bench him. At least he'll feel like he's part of the team.
this guy was the twelth pick in the draft
tomjgiant : 9/30/2014 5:58 pm : link
for a reason. He has alot of talent. If he is healthy lets get him on the field. He does not have to play the entire game but let him get some snaps in and build it up each game.
I his hammy is 100%
mrvax : 9/30/2014 6:03 pm : link
I'd toss him out there as the X receiver if only to get Cruz open.

This and tark's above it.
I don't claim to know Tom Coughlin

personally, but my sense of the man is that if the team doctors give him the green light on Beckham and say "Yes, Coach, he's ready to go" and coach feels he knows enough of the plays to say take Preston Parker's role.

His thought process is not going to be I've heard the medical advice and I have seen what he absorbed from watching practice and the limited time he's had and he could be the #4 WR, but I'm going to wait it out another week, better yet, I'll wait until after the bye before I activate our 1st round pick.

Even if he doesn't

have a full mastery of the plays, I'd love to see him dress and get a few snaps on plays he does now that don't involve him (like a run to the opposite side of the field). I would think that the natural jitters of a rookie NFL player is only further compounded by the high expectations of him as a top pick, and the anxiety that he hasn't been able to contribute yet at all due to injury has him pretty riled up. I think just getting in the game and making a block, or running a few routes (even if in a meaningless way) would relieve a lot of pressure and make things easier for the following week.

If he plays, it'll probably just be on punt/kick returns
BlackLight : 9/30/2014 6:55 pm : link
I don't see him moving up the receiving corps depth chart unless we have injuries.

Wow, one of the worst "correction posts" i've ever seen.

ODB may have two L's in his name but Odel very clearly has 1 L in it. Now... That's a fact!
If he was cleared to fully practice, then he should be 100%
Simms11 : 9/30/2014 7:07 pm : link
and ready to contibute. He needs to see the field if they can put him in a few packages. He definitely needs to get his feet wet, even if for only a few plays. How cautious can you be?! He's got to get confident in what he's doing and you have to play to do that. I think he doesn't want any more set backs and is afraid to kind of test the hammy, at least from the comments I hear. I'd work him into the offense starting this week and start to expand his plays for Philly and Dallas.
the games vs.
St. Jimmy : 9/30/2014 7:07 pm : link
Philly and Dallas are more important than this game. If he can go, get him game action here so he has at least taken an NFL hit before playing in the Division.
If he practices all week I think...
Ryan : 9/30/2014 7:20 pm : link
...you activate him, get the experience of actually playing in an NFL game and all that goes with it out of the way, and play it by ear how much you use him. I'm sure they have a pretty good idea of how much of the offense he has digested and how much he would be able to handle without posing a risk of shitting himself.

Best case scenario we get up big and he can get some garbage time drives to cut his teeth.

but if the doctors give him the green light and he's been able to practice this week without setbacks, why not?

How about in garbage time?

Think he
TMS : 9/30/2014 8:31 pm : link
will get some time on the field where he will run a few routes make some catches and take some hits. He has to be brought along gradually but he will see action. TC is here to win not play scared, if he gets the medical OK.
I'd be shocked if he plays this week
djm : 9/30/2014 8:35 pm : link
And I'd be pretty surprised if he plays the week after but it's possible.

He needs a good two weeks of practice before this staff feels comfy enough to throw him out there. If I had to bet I'd say Odell plays specials a week from Sunday.

Kepler is terrible. Every post is laced with trolling, uninformed, ignorant complaints. Just terrible. Act wore thin in august.
He won't start
dutch1 : 9/30/2014 8:41 pm : link
But I am sure with his speed and moves they can draw up a couple of plays for certain situations.

we will be fine with or without him

we need him to be healthy for the season and on top of the playbook.
I think
natefit : 9/30/2014 9:25 pm : link
he gets a few plays at non crucial times. Maybe a quick slant reception. Very limited but enough to address the anxiety he has to be facing. IF hes really ready...
I think he will get in 4 wr sets
ANGPASS : 9/30/2014 9:56 pm : link
i would think he get on the field for maybe 8-12 snaps at most. just to get him some game reps. i don't think you can just throw a rookie wr with no nfl experience in game game for over 50% of the plays. it will probably increase the risk of a mistake.
